ThomsonAND when Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, and was told by men, saying, David is in the wilderness of Engaddi,
BrentonAnd David rose up from thence, and dwelt in the narrow passes of Engaddi.
GreekΚαὶ ἀνέστη Δαυὶδ ἐκεῖθεν, καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐν τοῖς στενοῖς Ἐνγαδδί.

Thomsonhe took with him three thousand men, selected out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men in front of Saddaiem.
BrentonAnd it came to pass when Saul returned from pursuing after the Philistines, that it was reported to him, saying, David is in the wilderness of Engaddi.
GreekΚαὶ ἐγενήθη ὡς ἀνέστρεψε Σαοὺλ ἀπὸ ὄπισθεν τῶν ἀλλοφύλων, καὶ ἀπηγγέλη αὐτῷ, λεγόντων, ὅτι Δαυὶδ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Ἐνγαδδί.

ThomsonAnd when he came to the sheepcots by the way side, where there was a cave, Saul went into it to prepare himself. Now David and his men had taken up their abode in the inner part of the cave.
BrentonAnd he took with him three thousand men, chosen out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men in front of Saddæem.
GreekΚαὶ ἔλαβε μεθʼ ἑαυτοῦ τρεῖς χιλιάδας ἀνδρῶν ἐκλεκτοὺς ἐκ παντὸς Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ ἐπορεύθη ζητεῖν τὸν Δαυὶδ καὶ τοὺς ἄνδρας αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον Σαδδαιέμ.

ThomsonSo David’s men said to him, Behold this is the day, which the Lord mentioned to thee, that He would deliver thine enemy into thy hands, that thou mayst do to him what seemeth good in thine eyes. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s cloak privily.
BrentonAnd he came to the flocks of sheep that were by the way, and there was a cave there; and Saul went in to make preparation, and David and his men were sitting in the inner part of the cave.
GreekΚαὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὰς ἀγέλας τῶν ποιμνίων τὰς ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ, καὶ ἦν ἐκεῖ σπήλαιον· καὶ Σαοὺλ εἰσῆλθε παρασκευάσασθαι, καὶ Δαυὶδ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ ἐσώτερον τοῦ σπηλαίου ἐκάθηντο.

ThomsonAnd after this David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off the skirt of Saul’s cloak.
BrentonAnd the men of David said to him, Behold, this is the day of which the Lord spoke to thee, that he would deliver thine enemy into thy hands; and thou shalt do to him as it is good in thy sight. So David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul's garment secretly.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπον οἱ ἄνδρες Δαυὶδ πρὸς αὐτὸν, ἰδοὺ ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη, ἣν εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς σὲ παραδοῦναι τὸν ἐχθρόν σου εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου, καὶ ποιήσεις αὐτῷ ὡς ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου· καὶ ἀνέστη Δαυὶδ, καὶ ἀφεῖλε τὸ πτερύγιον τῆς διπλοΐδος τοῦ Σαοὺλ λαθραίως.

ThomsonAnd David said to his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the anointed of the Lord, to lift up my hand against him; for he is the Lord’s anointed.
BrentonAnd it came to pass after this that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off the skirt of his garment.
GreekΚαὶ ἐγενήθη μετὰ ταῦτα, καὶ ἐπάταξε καρδία Δαυὶδ αὐτὸν, ὅτι ἀφεῖλε τὸ πτερύγιον τῆς διπλοΐδος αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonSo David prevailed on his men by these words, and did not permit them to rise, and kill Saul. And when Saul arose and went on his way,
BrentonAnd David said to his men, The Lord forbid it me, that I should do this thing to my lord the anointed of the Lord, to lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ πρὸς τοὺς ἄνδρας αὐτοῦ, μηδαμῶς μοι παρὰ Κυρίου, εἰ ποιήσω τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο τῷ κυρίῳ μου τῷ χριστῷ Κυρίου, ἐπενέγκαι χεῖρά μου ἐπʼ αὐτὸν, ὅτι χριστὸς Κυρίου ἐστὶν οὗτος.

ThomsonDavid went after him out of the cave. And David cried with a loud voice after Saul, and said, My lord, O king! And when Saul looked about behind him, David bowed down, with his face to the ground, and made obeisance to him.
BrentonSo David persuaded his men by his words, and did not suffer them to arise and slay Saul: and Saul arose and went his way.
GreekΚαὶ ἔπεισε Δαυὶδ τοὺς ἄνδρας αὐτοῦ ἐν λόγοις, καὶ οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἀναστάντας θῦσαι τὸν Σαούλ· καὶ ἀνέστη Σαοὺλ καὶ κατέβη τὴν ὁδόν.

ThomsonThen David said to Saul, Why dost thou hearken to the words of the people who say, Behold David seeketh thy life?
BrentonAnd David rose up and went after him out of the cave: and David cried after Saul, saying, My lord, O king! and Saul looked behind him, and David bowed with his face to the ground, and did obeisance to him.
GreekΚαὶ ἀνέστη Δαυὶδ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ σπηλαίου· καὶ ἐβόησε Δαυὶδ ὀπίσω Σαοὺλ, λέγων, κύριε βασιλευ· καὶ ἐπέβλεψε Σαοὺλ εἰς τᾶ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔκυψε Δαυὶδ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ.

ThomsonBehold this very day thine eyes have seen, how the Lord delivered thee to-day into my hands, in the cave, and I would not kill thee, but spared thee, and said, I will not lift up my hand against my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.
BrentonAnd David said to Saul, Why dost thou hearken to the words of the people, saying, Behold, David seeks thy life?
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ πρὸς Σαοὺλ, ἱνατί ἀκούεις τῶν λόγων τοῦ λαοῦ, λεγόντων, ἰδοὺ Δαυὶδ ζητεῖ τὴν ψυχήν σου;

ThomsonNow behold here is the skirt of thy cloak in my hand. I cut off the skirt, but did not kill thee. Know, therefore, and see now that there is no wickedness in my hand—no impiety or disloyalty; nor have I sinned against thee, though thou huntest my life to take it.
BrentonBehold, thine eyes have seen this day how that the Lord has delivered thee this day into my hands in the cave; and I would not slay thee, but spared thee, and said, I will not lift up my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord's anointed.
GreekἸδοὺ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ ἑωράκασιν οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ὡς παρέδωκέ σε Κύριος σήμερον εἰς χεῖράς μου ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ, καὶ οὐκ ἠβουλήθην ἀποκτεῖναί σε, καὶ ἐφεισάμην σου, καὶ εἶπα, οὐκ ἐποίσω χεῖρά μου ἐπὶ κύριόν μου, ὅτι χριστὸς Κυρίου οὗτός ἐστι.

ThomsonThe Lord judge between me and thee. And the Lord avenge thee on thyself. Let not my hand be upon thee.
BrentonAnd behold, the skirt of thy mantle is in my hand, I cut off the skirt, and did not slay thee: know then and see to-day, there is no evil in my hand, nor impiety, nor rebellion; and I have not sinned against thee, yet thou layest snares for my soul to take it.
Greekκαὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ πτερύγιον τῆς διπλοΐδος σου ἐν τῇ χειρί μου, ἐγὼ ἀφῄρηκα τὸ πτερύγιον, καὶ οὐκ ἀπέκτανκά σε· καὶ γνῶθι καὶ ἴδε σήμερον, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστι κακία ἐν τῇ χειρί μου οὐδὲ ἀσέβεια καὶ ἀθέτησις, καὶ οὐχ ἡμάρτηκα εἰς σὲ, καὶ σὺ δεσμεύεις τὴν ψυχήν μου λαβεῖν αὐτήν.

ThomsonAccording to the old proverb, From the wicked will proceed transgression. So let not my hand be upon thee.
BrentonThe Lord judge between me and thee, and the Lord requite thee on thyself: but my hand shall not be upon thee.
GreekΔικάσαι Κύριος ἀναμέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ, καὶ ἐκδικήσαι σοι Κύριος ἐκ σου· καὶ ἡ χείρ μου οὐκ ἔσται ἐπὶ σὲ,

ThomsonAnd now, after whom art thou coming out, O king of Israel? And after whom art thou in pursuit? After a dead dog? Or after a flea?

ThomsonThe Lord be a judge, and a discerner of right, between me and thee. May the Lord see, and judge my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand!
BrentonAnd now after whom dost thou come forth, O king of Israel? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, and after a flea?
GreekΚαὶ νῦν ὀπίσω τίνος σὺ ἐκπορεύῃ βασιλεῦ Ἰσραήλ; ὀπίσω τίνος καταδιώκεις σύ; ὀπίσω κυνὸς τεθνηκότος, καὶ ὀπίσω ψύλλου ἑνός;

ThomsonAnd when David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul raised his voice, and wept.
BrentonThe Lord be judge and umpire between me and thee, the Lord look upon and judge my cause, and rescue me out of thy hand.
GreekΓένοιτο Κύριος εἰς κριτὴν καὶ δικαστὴν ἀναμέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ἀναμέσον σοῦ, ἴδοι Κύριος καὶ κρίναι τὴν κρίσιν μου, καὶ δικάσαι μοι ἐκ χειρός σου.

ThomsonThen Saul said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast returned me good; but I have returned thee evil.
BrentonAnd it came to pass when David had finished speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, son David? and Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο, ὡς συνετέλεσε Δαυὶδ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα λαλῶν πρὸς Σαοὺλ, καὶ εἶπε Σαοὺλ, ἡ φωνή σου αὕτη, τέκνον Δαυίδ; καὶ ᾖρε Σαοὺλ τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔκλαυσε.

ThomsonThou hast indeed proved to me this day the good thou hast done me; as the Lord delivered me this day into thy hands, and thou hast not slain me.
BrentonAnd Saul said to David, Thou art more righteous than I, for thou hast recompensed me good, but I have recompensed thee evil.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Σαοὺλ πρὸς Δαυὶδ, δίκαιος σὺ ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ, ὅτι σὺ ἀνταπέδωκάς μοι ἀγαθά, ἐγὼ δὲ ἀνταπέδωκά σοι κακά.

ThomsonNow, because if any man find his enemy in distress, and send him away well, the Lord will reward him with good,
BrentonAnd thou hast told me to-day what good thou hast done me, how the Lord shut me up into thy hands to-day, and thou didst not slay me.
GreekΚαὶ σὺ ἀπήγγειλάς μοι σήμερον ἃ ἐποίησάς μοι ἀγαθὰ, ὡς ἀπέκλεισέ με Κύριος εἰς χεῖράς σου σήμερον, καὶ οὐκ ἀπέκτεινάς με.

Thomsontherefore now behold I know that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in thy hand.
BrentonAnd if any one should find his enemy in distress, and should send him forth in a good way, then the Lord will reward him good, as thou hast done this day.
GreekΚαὶ ὅτι εἰ εὕροι τις τὸν ἐχθρὸν αὐτοῦ ἐν θλίψει, καὶ ἐκπέμψοι αὐτὸν ἐν ὁδῷ ἀγαθῇ, καὶ Κύριος ἀποτίσει αὐτῷ ἀγαθὰ, καθὼς πεποίηκας σήμερον.

ThomsonNow therefore swear to me by the Lord, that thou wilt not destroy my seed after me; nor blot out my name from the house of my father.
BrentonAnd now, behold, I know that thou shalt surely reign, and the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thy hand.
GreekΚαὶ νῦν ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ γινώσκω, ὅτι βασιλεύων βασιλεύσεις, καὶ στήσεται ἐν χειρί σου ἡ βασιλεία Ἰσραήλ.

ThomsonSo David swore to Saul, and Saul departed to his place, and David and his men went up to the straits of Messara.
BrentonNow then swear to me by the Lord, that thou wilt not destroy my seed after me, that thou wilt not blot out my name from the house of my father.
GreekΚαὶ νῦν ὄμοσόν μοι ἐν Κυρίῳ, ὅτι οὐκ ἐξολοθρεύσεις τὸ σπέρμα μου ὀπίσω μοῦ, οὐκ ἀφανιεῖς τὸ ὄνομά μου ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ πατρός μου.
