ThomsonTHEN the Spirit of the Lord came upon Azarias son of Oded,
BrentonAnd Azarias the son of Oded—upon him came the Spirit of the Lord,

Thomsonand he went out to meet Asa and all Juda and Benjamin, and said, Hear me Asa, and all Juda and Benjamin. The Lord is with you, while you are with Him. And if you seek Him, He will be found by you. But if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.

ThomsonAnd though for a long time Israel may be without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law,
BrentonAnd Israel has been a long time without the true God, and without a priest to expound the truth, and without the law.
GreekΚαὶ ἡμέραι πολλαὶ τῷ Ἰσραὴλ ἐν οὐ Θεῷ ἀληθινῷ, καὶ οὐχ ἱερέως ὑποδεικνῦντος, καὶ ἐν οὐ νόμῳ.

Thomsonyet when they shall turn to the Lord God of Israel, He will be found by them.

GreekΚαὶ ἐπιστρέψει αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ Κύριον Θεὸν Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ εὑρεθήσεται αὐτοῖς.

ThomsonAnd though at that time there be no peace to him who goeth out, or to him who cometh in, because the terror of the Lord is on all the inhabitants of these countries—
BrentonAnd in that time there is no peace to one going out, or to one coming in, for the terror of the Lord is upon all that inhabit the lands.

Thomsonthough nation may fight against nation, and city against city, because God hath confounded them with all kinds of affliction;
BrentonAnd nation shall fight against nation, and city against city; for God has confounded them with every kind of affliction.

Thomsonyet strengthen ye yourselves, and let not your hands be weak; for your work shall be rewarded.
BrentonBut be ye strong, and let not your hands be weakened: for there is a reward for your work.
GreekΚαὶ ὑμεῖς ἰσχύσατε, καὶ μὴ ἐκλυέσθωσαν αἱ χεῖρες ὑμῶν, ὅτι ἔστι μισθὸς τῇ ἐργασίᾳ ὑμῶν.

ThomsonUpon hearing these words and this prophecy of the prophet Adad, Asa took courage, and removed the abominations out of all the land of Juda and Benjamin, and from all the cities he held from Jeroboam, on mount Ephraim. And having dedicated anew the altar of the Lord, which is before the temple of the Lord,
BrentonAnd when Asa heard these words, and the prophecy of Adad the prophet, then he strengthened himself, and cast out the abominations from all the land of Juda and Benjamin, and from the cities which Jeroboam possessed, in mount Ephraim, and he renewed the altar of the Lord, which was before the temple of the Lord.

Thomsonhe assembled Juda and the strangers who worshipped with him from Ephraim, and from Manasses, and from Symeon, for many of the Israelites had joined him when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.
BrentonAnd he assembled Juda and Benjamin, and the strangers that dwelt with him, of Ephraim, and of Manasse, and of Symeon: for many of Israel were joined to him, when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.

Thomsonand that whoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel should be put to death, whether young or old, whether man or woman.

Thomsonand all Juda rejoiced at the oath; for they swore with their whole heart, and sought Him with their whole desire, and He was found by them. And the Lord gave them rest round about.

ThomsonMoreover he restrained Maacha his mother from performing religious service to Astarte. And he cut to pieces the idol, and burned it by the brook Kedron.

ThomsonBut the high places were not removed. They still remained in Israel. But Asa’s heart was perfect all his days.

ThomsonNow Asa was engaged in no war, till the thirty-fifth year of his reign.
