ThomsonTHOUGH the war was lengthened out between the house of Saul and the house of David, yet the house of David grew stronger and stronger, but the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.
BrentonAnd there was war for a long time between the house of Saul and the house of David; and the house of David grew continually stronger; but the house of Saul grew continually weaker.

ThomsonFor this Abenner was exceedingly enraged at Jebosthe, and said to him, Am I a dog’s head? Have I now dealt kindly with the house of Saul, thy father, and with his brethren, and relations, and not gone over to the house of David, and dost thou question me now respecting an injury done to a woman?
BrentonAnd Abenner was very angry with Jebosthe for this saying; and Abenner said to him, Am I a dog's head? ThomsonOn which David said, Well, I will make a covenant with thee. But one thing I require of thee, and declare that thou shalt not see my face, unless thou bring Melchol the daughter of Saul, when thou comest to see me.

Thomsonnow therefore do it; for the Lord hath spoken concerning David, saying, By the hand of My servant David I will save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.

ThomsonThen Abenner said to David, Let me, I pray thee, arise and go, and I will assemble all Israel before my lord the king, and make a covenant with him, and thou shalt reign over all that thy heart desireth. So David dismissed Abenner, and he departed in peace.
BrentonAnd Abenner said to David, I will arise now, and go, and gather to my lord the king all Israel; and I will make with him a covenant, and thou shalt reign over all whom thy soul desires. And David sent away Abenner, and he departed in peace.

ThomsonNow behold David’s servants, and Joab, were returning from an expedition, and bringing with them a great spoil; and Abenner was not with David at Chebron, for David had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.
BrentonAnd, behold, the servants of David and Joab arrived from their expedition, and they brought much spoil with them: and Abenner was not with David in Chebron, because he had sent him away, and he had departed in peace.

ThomsonJoab went to the king, and said, What is this thou hast done? Behold Abenner came to thee! Why then hast thou sent him away? And he is gone in peace?

ThomsonAnd when Abenner returned to Chebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak to him, and watching an opportunity, smote him there in the groin, and he died, for the blood of Asael the brother of Joab.
BrentonAnd he brought back Abenner to Chebron, and Joab caused him to turn aside from the gate to speak to him, laying wait for him: and he smote him there in the loins, and he died for the blood of Asael the brother of Joab.

ThomsonAnd when David afterward heard, he said, Guiltless am I and my kingdom, before the Lord forever, from the blood of Abenner, son of Ner.
BrentonAnd David heard of it afterwards, and said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the Lord even for ever of the blood of Abenner the son of Ner.

ThomsonLet it fall on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house! And may there never be wanting of the house of Joab, a person afflicted with a gonorrhea, or a leprosy, or one leaning on a staff, or falling by the sword, or lacking bread!
BrentonLet it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all the house of his father; and let there not be wanting of the house of Joab one that has an issue, or a leper, or that leans on a staff, or that falls by the sword, or that wants bread.

ThomsonNow Joab and his brother Abessa, bore a grudge against Abenner, because he had slain their brother Asael in the battle at Gabaon.
BrentonFor Joab and Abessa his brother laid wait continually for Abenner, because he slew Asael their brother at Gabaon in the battle.
GreekἸωὰβ δὲ καὶ Ἀβεσσὰ ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ διαπαρετηροῦντο τὸν Ἀβεννὴρ, ἀνθʼ ὧν ἐθανάτωσε τὸν Ἀσαὴλ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτῶν ἐν Γαβαὼν, ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ.

ThomsonThen David said to Joab, and to all the people who were with him, Rend your garments and gird on sackcloth, and utter lamentations before Abenner. And king David walked after the bier,
BrentonAnd David said to Joab and to all the people with him, Rend your garments, and gird yourselves with sackcloth, and lament before Abenner. And king David followed the bier.

Thomsonand they buried Abenner at Chebron. And the king wept aloud over his grave, and all the people wept over Abenner.
BrentonAnd they bury Abenner in Chebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at his tomb, and all the people wept for Abenner.

ThomsonAnd the king chanted a funeral song over Abenner, and said: As dieth a criminal should Abenner die?
BrentonAnd the king mourned over Abenner, and said, Shall Abenner die according to the death of Nabal?
GreekΚαὶ ἐθρήνησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ Ἀβεννὴρ, καὶ εἶπεν, εἰ κατὰ τὸν θάνατον Νάβαλ ἀποθανεῖται Ἀβεννήρ;

ThomsonThy hands were not bound with chains; Nor thy feet with fetters. He did not bring thee forth as a criminal; Before sons of wickedness thou hast fallen.
BrentonThy hands were not bound, and thy feet were not put in fetters: one brought thee not near as Nabal; thou didst fall before children of iniquity.

ThomsonNow all the people had been assembled to bewail him; and when all the people came to induce David to eat the funeral bread while it was yet day, David swore, saying, God do so to me and more also, if I taste bread, or anything else, till the sun is set.
BrentonAnd all the people assembled to weep for him. And all the people came to cause David to eat bread while it was yet day: and David swore, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if I eat bread or any thing else before the sun goes down.

ThomsonAnd when the people knew this, they were well pleased with all that the king did before the people.
