ThomsonWHEN thou shalt go out to battle against thine enemies, and see horsemen, and charioteers, and a people more numerous than thou art; be not afraid of them; for the Lord thy God is with thee—He who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
BrentonAnd if thou shouldest go forth to war against thine enemies, and shouldest see horse, and rider, and a people more numerous than thyself; thou shalt not be afraid of them, for the Lord thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

ThomsonAnd when thou art near coming to battle, the priest shall approach, and speak to the people,
BrentonAnd it shall come to pass whenever thou shalt draw nigh to battle, that the priest shall draw nigh and speak to the people, and shall say to them,
GreekΚαὶ ἔσται ὅταν ἐγγίσῃς τῷ πολέμῳ, καὶ προσεγγίσας ὁ ἱερεὺς λαλήσει τῷ λαῷ,

Thomsonand say to them, Hear, O Israel! You are now going to battle against your enemies; let not your heart be discouraged; fear not, nor be dismayed, nor turn aside from before them;
BrentonHear, O Israel; ye are going this day to battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint, fear not, neither be confounded, neither turn aside from their face.
Greekκαὶ ἐρεῖ πρὸς αὐτοὺς, ἄκουε Ἰσραήλ· ὑμεῖς πορεύεσθε σήμερον εἰς τὸν πόλεμον ἐπὶ τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν· μὴ ἐκλυέσθω ἡ καρδία ὑμῶν, μὴ φοβεῖσθε, μηδὲ θραύεσθε, μηδὲ ἐκκλίνετε ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν.

Thomsonfor the Lord your God goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, and to save you.
BrentonFor it is the Lord your God who advances with you, to fight with you against your enemies, and to save you.
GreekὍτι Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ὑμῶν ὁ προπορευόμενος μεθʼ ὑμῶν, συνεκπολεμῆσαι ὑμῖν τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν διασῶσαι ὑμᾶς.

ThomsonThen the scribes shall speak to the people, and say, If there be any man who hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it, let him go, and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
BrentonAnd the scribes shall speak to the people, saying, What man is he that has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the war, and another man dedicate it.
GreekΚαὶ λαλήσουσιν οἱ γραμματεῖς πρὸς τὸν λαὸν, λέγοντες, τίς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ οἰκοδομήσας οἰκίαν καινὴν, καὶ οὐκ ἐνεκαίνισεν αὐτήν; πορευέσθω καὶ ἀποστραφήτω εἰς τὴν· οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ, μὴ ἀποθάνῃ ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ, καὶ ἄνθρωπος ἕτερος ἐγκαινιεῖ αὐτήν.

ThomsonOr is there any man who hath planted a vineyard, and hath not been regaled with it; let him go, and return to his family, lest he die in the battle, and another man be regaled with it.
BrentonAnd what man is he that has planted a vineyard, and not been made merry with it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man be made merry with it.

ThomsonAnd the scribes shall further speak to the people, and say, Is there any man fearful, and faint-hearted; let him go, and return to his family, lest he make the heart of his brother faint as his own.
BrentonAnd the scribes shall speak further to the people, and say, What man is he that fears and is cowardly in his heart? Let him go and return to his house, lest he make the heart of his brother fail, as his own.
GreekΚαὶ προσθήσουσιν οἱ γραμματεῖς λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν λαὸν, καὶ ἐροῦσι, τίς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ φοβούμενος καὶ δειλὸς τῇ καρδίᾳ; πορευέσθω καὶ ἀποστραφήτω εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ, ἵνα μὴ δειλιάνῃ τὴν καρδίαν τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ, ὥσπερ ἡ αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonAnd when the scribes have done speaking to the people, they shall appoint the chiefs of the army to lead on the people.
BrentonAnd it shall come to pass when the scribes shall have ceased speaking to the people, that they shall appoint generals of the army to be leaders of the people.
GreekΚαὶ ἔσται ὅταν παύσωνται οἱ γραμματεῖς λαλοῦντες πρὸς τὸν λαὸν, καὶ καταστήσουσιν ἄρχοντας τῆς στρατιᾶς προηγουμένους τοῦ λαοῦ.

ThomsonAnd when thou art come to a city, to fight against it, thou shalt call upon the inhabitants to come out peaceably.
BrentonAnd if thou shalt draw nigh to a city to overcome them by war, then call them out peaceably.
GreekἘὰν δὲ προσέλθῃς πρὸς πόλιν ἐκπολεμῆσαι αὐτοὺς, καὶ ἐκκαλέσαι αὐτοὺς μετʼ εἰρήνης.

ThomsonAnd if they return thee a peaceful answer, and open to thee; all the people who are found therein shall be tributary to thee, and be thy subjects.
BrentonIf then they should answer peaceably to thee, and open to thee, it shall be that all the people found in it shall be tributary and subject to thee.
GreekἘὰν μὲν εἰρηνικὰ ἀποκριθῶσί σοι, καὶ ἀνοίξωσί σοι, ἔσται πᾶς ὁ λαὸς οἱ εὑρεθέντες ἐν αὐτῇ ἔσονταί σοι φορολόγητοι καὶ ὑπήκοοί σου.

ThomsonBut if they hearken not to thee, and make war against thee, thou shalt besiege it,
BrentonBut if they will not hearken to thee, but wage war against thee, thou shalt invest it;
GreekἘὰν δὲ μὴ ὑπακούσωσί σοι, καὶ ποιῶσι πρὸς σὲ πόλεμον, περικαθιεῖς αὐτὴν,

Thomsonuntil the Lord thy God deliver it into thy hands. And when thou hast smitten all the males therein with the slaughter of the sword, thou shalt take for thyself,
Brentonuntil the Lord thy God shall deliver it into thy hands, and thou shalt smite every male of it with the edge of the sword:
Greekἕως ἂν παραδῷ σοι αὐτὴν Κύριος ὁ Θεός σου εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου, καὶ πατάξεις πᾶν ἀρσενικὸν αὐτῆς ἐν φόνῳ μαχαίρας,

Thomsonbesides the women and the children, all the cattle, and all spoils that are in the city, and eat all the prey of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Brentonexcept the women and the stuff: and all the cattle, and whatsoever shall be in the city, and all the plunder thou shalt take as spoil for thyself, and shalt eat all the plunder of thine enemies whom the Lord thy God gives thee.

ThomsonIn this manner thou shalt treat all the cities which are at a great distance from thee, which are not of the cities of those nations whose land the Lord thy God giveth thee for a possession.
BrentonThus shalt thou do to all the cities that are very far off from thee, not being of the cities of these nations which the Lord thy God gives thee to inherit their land.
GreekΟὕτως ποιήσεις πάσας τὰς πόλεις τὰς μακρὰν οὔσας σου σφόδρα, οὐχὶ ἐκ τῶν πόλεων τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων,

ThomsonOf these you shall save none alive that breatheth;

Thomsonbut, with an anathema thou shalt dedicate to destruction the Chettite and the Amorite, and the Chananite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Gergasite, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee;
Brentonbut ye shall surely curse them, the Chettite, and the Amorite, and the Chananite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Gergesite; as the Lord thy God commanded thee:
Greekἀλλʼ ἢ ἀναθέματι ἀναθεματιεῖτε αὐτοὺς, τὸν Χετταῖον, καὶ Ἀμοῤῥαῖον, καὶ Χαναναῖον, καὶ Φερεζαῖον, καὶ Εὐαῖον, καὶ Ἰεβουσαῖον, καὶ Γεργεσαῖον, ὃν τρόπον ἐνετείλατό σοι Κύριος ὁ Θεός σου,

Thomsonthat they may not teach you all their abominations which they have performed to their gods; and that you may not sin before the Lord your God.
Brentonthat they may not teach you to do all their abominations, which they did to their gods, and so ye should sin before the Lord your God.
Greekἵνα μὴ διδάξωσι ποιεῖν ὑμᾶς πάντα τὰ βδελύγματα αὐτῶν, ὅσα ἐποίησαν τοῖς θεοῖς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἁμαρτήσεσθε ἐναντίον Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑμῶν.

ThomsonNow when thou shalt sit down before a city, many days, to war against it till it be taken, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by striking an axe against them. That especially, the fruit of which thou mayst eat, thou shalt not cut down. Doth any man wish to have a tree in the field for the purpose of a rampart for thee;
BrentonAnd if thou shouldest besiege a city many days to prevail against it by war to take it, thou shalt not destroy its trees, by applying an iron tool to them, but thou shalt eat of it, and shalt not cut it down: Is the tree that is in the field a man, to enter before thee into the work of the siege?
GreekἘὰν δὲ περικαθίσῃς περὶ πόλιν μίαν ἡμέρας πλείους ἐκπολεμῆσαι αὐτὴν εἰς κατάληψιν αὐτῆς, οὐκ ἐξολεθρεύσεις τὰ δένδρα αὐτῆς, ἐπιβαλεῖν ἐπʼ αὐτὰ σίδηρον, ἀλλʼ ἢ ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ φαγῇ, αὐτὸ δὲ οὐκ ἐκκόψεις· μὴ ἄνθρωπος τὸ ξύλον τὸ ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ, εἰσελθεῖν ἀπὸ προσώπου σου εἰς τὸν χάρακα;

Thomsonlet it be that only which thou knowest is not a fruit bearing tree. This thou mayst destroy and cut down, to build ramparts against the city which resisteth thee, until it be delivered up.
BrentonBut the tree which thou knowest to be not fruit-bearing, this thou shalt destroy and cut down; and thou shalt construct a mound against the city, which makes war against thee, until it be delivered up.
GreekἈλλὰ ξύλον ὃ ἐπίστασαι ὅτι οὐ καρπόβρωτόν ἐστι, τοῦτο ὀλοθρεύσεις καὶ ἐκκόψεις· καὶ οἰκοδομήσεις χαράκωσιν ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν, ἥτις ποιεῖ πρὸς σὲ τὸν πόλεμον, ἕως ἂν παραδοθῇ.
