1
ThomsonAND it came to pass in the seventh year, on the fifth month and tenth day of the month, that some of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and while they were sitting before me
BrentonAnd it came to pass in the seventh year, on the fifteenth day of the month, there came men of the elders of the house of Israel to enquire of the Lord, and they sat before me.
2
Thomsona word of the Lord came to me, saying,
BrentonAnd the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
3
ThomsonSon of man speak to the elders of the house of Israel and thou shalt say to them, Thus saith the Lord, Are you come to inquire of Me? As I live, saith the Lord, I will not answer you;
BrentonSon of man, speak to the elders of the house of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, Thus saith the Lord; Are ye come to enquire of me? As I live, I will not be enquired of by you, saith the Lord.
4
ThomsonI will not, son of man, with avengement avenge them. Testify against them the iniquities of their fathers and
BrentonShall I utterly take vengeance on them, son of man? testify to them of the iniquities of their fathers:
5
Thomsonthou shalt say to them, Thus saith the Lord, from the day I chose the house of Israel; and was made known to the seed of the house of Jacob; and acknowledged by them in the land of Egypt; when I took hold of them with My hand, saying, I the Lord am your God,—
Brentonand thou shalt say to them, Thus saith the Lord; From the day that I chose the house of Israel, and became known to the seed of the house of Jacob, and was known to them in the land of Egypt, and helped them with my hand, saying, I am the Lord your God;
6
Thomsonon the very day when I took hold of them with My hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt into the land which I had prepared for them—a land flowing with milk and honey—it is the honeycomb of the whole earth;
Brentonin that day I helped them with my hand, to bring them out of the land of Egypt into the land which I prepared for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, it is abundant beyond every land.
7
Thomsonthough I said to them let everyone put away the abominations of his eyes and with the devices of Egypt be not polluted, I the Lord am your God;
BrentonAnd I said to them, Let every one cast away the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the devices of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
8
Thomsonyet they apostatised from Me and would not hearken to Me. They did not cast away the abominations of their eyes, nor did they utterly forsake the devices of Egypt; therefore I spoke of pouring out My wrath on them—of spending Mine indignation on them in the midst of Egypt;
BrentonBut they revolted from me, and would not hearken to me: they cast not away the abominations of their eyes, and forsook not the devices of Egypt: then I said that I would pour out my wrath upon them, to accomplish my wrath upon them in the midst of Egypt.
9
Thomsonbut that My name might not be altogether profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they were, I did in their sight [those miracles] by which I was made known to them, in order to bring them out of the land of Egypt.
BrentonBut I wrought so that my name should not be at all profaned in the sight of the Gentiles, in the midst of whom they are, among whom I was made known to them in their sight, to bring them out of the land of Egypt.
10
ThomsonSo I led them into the wilderness; and gave them My statutes
BrentonAnd I brought them into the wilderness.
11
Thomsonand made known to them My rules of rectitude, which if a man practise he shall live thereby;
BrentonAnd I gave them my commandments, and made known to them mine ordinances, all which if a man shall do, he shall even live in them.
12
ThomsonI gave them also My sabbaths, to be a sign between Me and them; that they might know that I the Lord am their sanctifier.
BrentonAnd I gave them my sabbaths, that they should be for a sign between me and them, that they should know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.
13
ThomsonAnd I said to the house of Israel in the wilderness, Walk in My statutes, but they walked not. They rejected My rules of rectitude, which if a man practise he shall live by them; and they profaned My sabbaths exceedingly: whereupon I spoke of pouring out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to destroy them utterly:
BrentonAnd I said to the house of Israel in the wilderness, Walk ye in my commandments: but they walked not in them, and they rejected mine ordinances, which if a man shall do, he shall even live in them; and they grievously profaned my sabbaths: and I said that I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.
14
ThomsonBut I acted so that My name should not be altogether profaned in the sight of the nations, before whose eyes I had brought them out:
BrentonBut I wrought so that my name should not be at all profaned before the Gentiles, before whose eyes I brought them out.
15
Thomsonand I lifted up My hand against them in the wilderness thus far—that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them (a land flowing with milk and honey: it is the honeycomb of the whole earth);
BrentonBut I lifted up my hand against them in the wilderness once for all, that I would not bring them into the land which I gave them, a land flowing with milk and honey, it is sweeter than all lands:
16
Thomsonbecause they had rejected My rules of rectitude, and had not walked in My statutes; but profaned My sabbaths, and had gone after the desires of their own heart.
Brentonbecause they rejected mine ordinances, and walked not in my commandments, but profaned my sabbaths, and went after the imaginations of their hearts.
17
ThomsonBut Mine eye had compassion on them so as not to blot them out entirely; so I did not bring them to utter destruction in the wilderness.
BrentonYet mine eyes spared them, so as not to destroy them utterly, and I did not make an end of them in the wilderness.
18
ThomsonThen I said to their children in the wilderness, Walk not ye in the customs of your fathers, nor observe their rules of conduct; have no communication with their devices and be not polluted.
BrentonAnd I said to their children in the wilderness, Walk not ye in the customs of your fathers, and keep not their ordinances, and have no fellowship with their practices, nor defile yourselves with them.
19
ThomsonI the Lord am your God; walk in My statutes, and keep My rules of rectitude and practise them;
BrentonI am the Lord your God; walk in my commandments, and keep mine ordinances, and do them;
20
Thomsonand hallow My sabbaths and let them be a sign between Me and you, that you acknowledge that I the Lord am your God.
Brentonand hallow my sabbaths, and let them be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God.
21
ThomsonBut even these their children rebelled against Me. In My statutes they did not walk, nor did they keep My rules of rectitude to practise them, which if a man do he shall live by them; and they profaned My sabbaths; therefore I spoke of pouring out My wrath upon them in the wilderness—of accomplishing Mine indignation upon them.
BrentonBut they provoked me, and their children walked not in my commandments, and they took no heed to mine ordinances to do them, which if a man shall do, he shall even live in them, and they profaned my sabbaths: then I said that I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to accomplish mine anger upon them.
22
ThomsonBut I acted so that My name should not be utterly profaned in the sight of the nations. As I had brought them out before their eyes,
BrentonBut I wrought so that my name might not be at all profaned before the Gentiles; and I brought them out in their sight.
23
ThomsonI lifted up My hand against them in the wilderness that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them through the countries.
BrentonI lifted up my hand against them in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the Gentiles, and disperse them in the countries;
24
ThomsonBecause they did not practise My rules of rectitude, but rejected My statutes and profaned My sabbaths, and their eyes were after the desires of their fathers;
Brentonbecause they kept not mine ordinances, and rejected my commandments, and profaned my sabbaths, and their eyes went after the imaginations of their fathers.
25
Thomsontherefore I gave them statutes not morally good, and rules of conduct in which they could not entitle themselves to life by them,
BrentonSo I gave them commandments that were not good, and ordinances in which they should not live.
26
Thomsonthat I might by their own doctrinal notions pollute them, when I passed through all their first-born males in order to remove them out of sight.
BrentonAnd I will defile them by their own decrees, when I pass through upon every one that opens the womb, that I may destroy them.
27
ThomsonTherefore, speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord: Thus far your fathers provoked Me to wrath, by their transgressions which they committed against Me.
BrentonTherefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, Thus saith the Lord: Hitherto have your fathers provoked me in their trespasses in which they transgressed against me.
28
ThomsonAnd when I brought them into the land, which I lifted up My hand to give them; they beheld every high hill and every shady grove, and there they sacrificed to their gods; and there set in order the sweet smelling savour; and there poured out their libations.
BrentonWhereas I brought them into the land concerning which I lifted up mine hand to give it them; and they looked upon every high hill, and every shady tree, and they sacrificed there to their gods, and offered there a sweet-smelling savour, and there they poured out their drink-offerings.
29
ThomsonAnd when I said to them, What is this Abama, that you go thither, they called its name Abama, which it retaineth to this day.
BrentonAnd I said to them, What is Abama, that ye go in thither? and they called its name Abama, until this day.
30
ThomsonTherefore say to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord if you are polluted with the iniquities of your fathers and you go a whoring after their abominations
BrentonTherefore say to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord, Do ye pollute yourselves with the iniquities of your fathers, and do ye go a-whoring after their abominations,
31
Thomsoneven with the first fruits of your gifts—with those dedications with which you are polluted by all your desires even to this day, shall I return you an answer, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord, I will not answer you.
Brentonand do ye pollute yourselves with the first-fruits of your gifts, in the offerings wherewith ye pollute yourselves in all your imaginations, until this day; and shall I answer you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord, I will not answer you, neither shall this thing come upon your spirit.
32
ThomsonAnd though this should come into your mind, it shall not be as you say: We will be like the nations and like the tribes of the earth in worshipping stocks and stones.
BrentonAnd it shall not be as ye say, We will be as the nations, and as the tribes of the earth, to worship stocks and stones.
33
ThomsonFor as I live, saith the Lord, With a strong hand and an uplifted arm, and with an outpoured wrath I will reign over you.
BrentonTherefore, as I live, saith the Lord, I will reign over you with a strong hand, and with a high arm, and with outpoured wrath:
34
ThomsonAnd I will bring you out from among the peoples and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered with a strong hand and an uplifted arm and with outpoured wrath.
BrentonI will bring you out from the nations, and will take you out of the lands wherein ye were dispersed, with a strong hand, and with a high arm, and with outpoured wrath.
35
ThomsonAnd I will bring you into the wilderness of the tribes and there plead with you face to face.
BrentonAnd I will bring you into the wilderness of the nations, and will plead with you there face to face.
36
ThomsonAs I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord.
BrentonAs I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I judge you, saith the Lord.
37
ThomsonAnd I will make you pass under My rod and bring you in by number,
BrentonAnd I will cause you to pass under my rod, and I will bring you in by number.
38
Thomsonand select from among you the wicked and the apostates (for out of their captivity I will bring even these. but into the land of Israel they shall not come); and you shall know that I am the Lord God.
BrentonAnd I will separate from among you the ungodly and the revolters; for I will lead them forth out of their place of sojourning, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the Lord, even the Lord.
39
ThomsonNow as for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord: put away everyone his devices, and after that if you will hearken to Me, and no more profane My holy name with your gifts and your devices.
BrentonAnd as to you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord, even the Lord; Put away each one his evil practices, and hereafter if ye hearken to me, then shall ye no more profane my holy name by your gifts and by devices.
40
ThomsonFor on My holy mountain, on My lofty mountain, saith the Lord, there all the house of Israel shall serve Me a t last; and there I will expect and there I will accept your offerings-even the offerings of your dedications at all your solemnities.
BrentonFor upon my holy mountain, on the high mountain, saith the Lord, even the Lord, there shall all the house of Israel serve me for ever: and there will I accept you, and there will I have respect to your first-fruits, and the first-fruits of your offerings, in all your holy things.
41
ThomsonWith the odour of sweet smelling incense I will accept you, when I have brought you out from among the peoples, and receive you from the countries in which you have been dispersed, and I will be hallowed among you before the eyes of the peoples,
BrentonI will accept you with a sweet-smelling savour, when I bring you out from the nations, and take you out of the countries wherein ye have been dispersed; and I will be sanctified among you in the sight of the nations.
42
Thomsonand you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have brought you to the land of Israel, to the land for which I lifted up My hand to give it to your fathers;
BrentonAnd ye shall know that I am the Lord, when I have brought you into the land of Israel, into the land concerning which I lifted up my hand to give it to your fathers.
43
Thomsonand you will there remember your ways and your devices with which you have been polluted, and express contrition for all your acts of wickedness;
BrentonAnd ye shall there remember your ways, and your devices wherewith ye defiled yourselves; and ye shall bewail yourselves for all your wickedness.
44
Thomsonand acknowledge that I am the Lord, when I deal thus with you (that My name may not be profaned according to your evil ways and according to your corrupt devices), saith the Lord.
BrentonAnd ye shall know that I am the Lord, when I have done thus to you, that my name may not be profaned in your evil ways, and in your corrupt devices, saith the Lord.
