ThomsonBUT it happened that at the end of two years Pharao had a dream. He thought he was standing by the river;
BrentonAnd it came to pass after two full years that Pharao had a dream. He thought he stood upon the bank of the river.

ThomsonAgain he dreamed a second time; and lo! seven ears of corn sprang upon one stalk, choice and good: and lo! seven ears thin and blasted sprang up after them.

ThomsonUpon this Pharao sent for Joseph, and they brought him out of the prison. And when they had shaved him and changed his raiment, he came to Pharao.

ThomsonAnd Pharao said to Joseph, I have had a dream and there is none who can interpret it. But I have heard people say of thee, that upon hearing dreams thou canst interpret them.
BrentonAnd Pharao said to Joseph, I have seen a vision, and there is no one to interpret it; but I have heard say concerning thee that thou didst hear dreams and interpret them.

ThomsonIn reply to which, Joseph said to Pharao, Without God no answer of peace can be given to Pharao.
BrentonAnd Joseph answered Pharao and said, Without God an answer of safety shall not be given to Pharao.
GreekἈποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰωσὴφ τῷ Φαραὼ εἶπεν, ἄνευ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἀποκριθήσεται τὸ σωτήριον Φαραώ.

ThomsonBut though they devoured them, they gave no sign of fullness. Their appearance was as ugly as before. Then I awoke and again went to sleep,
BrentonAnd they went into their bellies; and it was not perceptible that they had gone into their bellies, and their appearance was ill-favoured, as also at the beginning; and after I awoke I slept,

Thomsonand in my sleep I again saw as if seven ears of corn sprang up, on one stalk, full and good;

ThomsonAnd the seven thin and blasted ears devoured the seven ears which were full and good. Now I have told the interpreters; but there is not one who can interpret this to me.

ThomsonThen Joseph said to Pharao, The dream of Pharao is one. God hath shewn Pharao what he is about to do.

ThomsonThis is the thing which I have said to Pharao, God hath shewn Pharao what he is about to do.
BrentonAnd as for the word which I have told Pharao, whatsoever God intends to do, he has shewn to Pharao:

ThomsonBehold seven years are coming of great plenty in all the land of Egypt.

ThomsonBut after these there will come seven years of famine. And they will cause the coming plenty to be forgotten in all Egypt. And the famine will consume the land,
BrentonBut there shall come seven years of famine after these, and they shall forget the plenty that shall be in all Egypt, and the famine shall consume the land.

Thomsonso that the plenty will not be known in the land, by reason of the famine which will come after it: for it will be very great.
BrentonAnd the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of the famine that shall be after this, for it shall be very grievous.

ThomsonAnd in as much as the dream of Pharao was doubled, the thing which God had determined will surely come to pass; and God is hastening to do it.
BrentonAnd concerning the repetition of the dream to Pharao twice, it is because the saying which is from God shall be true, and God will hasten to accomplish it.
GreekΠερὶ δὲ τοῦ δευτερῶσαι τὸ ἐνύπνιον Φαραὼ δὶς, ὅτι ἀληθὲς ἔσται τὸ ῥῆμα τὸ παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ· καὶ ταχυνεῖ ὁ Θεὸς τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτό.

ThomsonNow therefore look out for a man of prudence and understanding, and set him over the land of Egypt.
BrentonNow then, look out a wise and prudent man, and set him over the land of Egypt.
GreekΝῦν οὖν σκέψαι ἄνθρωπον φρόνιμον καὶ συνετὸν, καὶ κατάστησον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ γῆς Αἰγύπτου.

ThomsonAnd let Pharao appoint and set governors of districts over the whole land, and let them send in a fifth of all the products of the land of Egypt, during the seven years of plenty,
BrentonAnd let Pharao make and appoint local governors over the land; and let them take up a fifth part of all the produce of the land of Egypt for the seven years of the plenty.

Thomsonand collect all the eatables of those seven good years which are coming. And let food be collected under the care of Pharao, and eatables stored in the cities.
BrentonAnd let them gather all the food of these seven good years that are coming, and let the corn be gathered under the hand of Pharao; let food be kept in the cities.

ThomsonSo shall food be kept in the country, against the seven years of famine which will be in the land of Egypt, and the country will not be wasted with the famine.
BrentonAnd the stored food shall be for the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; and the land shall not be utterly destroyed by the famine.
GreekΚαὶ ἔσται τὰ βρώματα τὰ πεφυλαγμένα τῇ γῇ εἰς τὰ ἑπτὰ ἔτη τοῦ λιμοῦ, ἃ ἔσονται ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτου, καὶ οὐκ ἐκτριβήσεται ἡ γῆ ἐν τῷ λιμῷ.

ThomsonAnd the advice was agreeable in the view of Pharao and in the view of all his servants.
BrentonAnd the word was pleasing in the sight of Pharao, and in the sight of all his servants.
GreekἬρεσε δὲ τὸ ῥῆμα ἐναντίον Φαραὼ, καὶ ἐναντίον πάντων τῶν παίδων αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonAnd Pharao said to all his servants, Can we find such a man as this who hath in him the spirit of God?
BrentonAnd Pharao said to all his servants, Shall we find such a man as this, who has the Spirit of God in him?
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Φαραὼ πᾶσι τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ, μῆ εὑρήσομεν ἄνθρωπον τοιοῦτον, ὃς ἔχει πνεῦμα Θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ;

ThomsonThen Pharao said to Joseph, Seeing God hath shewn thee all these things, there is none more prudent and wise than thou thyself.
BrentonAnd Pharao said to Joseph, Since God has shewed thee all these things, there is not a wiser or more prudent man than thou.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ Φαραὼ τῷ Ἰωσὴφ, ἐπειδὴ ἔδειξεν ὁ Θεός σοι πάντα ταῦτα, οὐκ ἔστιν ἄνθρωπος φρονιμώτερος καὶ συνετώτερός σου.

ThomsonThou shalt be over my household and to thy command all my people shall pay obedience. Only on the throne will I be greater than thou.
BrentonThou shalt be over my house, and all my people shall be obedient to thy word; only in the throne will I excel thee.
GreekΣὺ ἔσῃ ἐπὶ τῷ οἴκῳ μου, καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ στόματί σου ὑπακούσεται πᾶς ὁ λαός μου· πλὴν τὸν θρόνον ὑπερέξω σου ἐγώ.

ThomsonMoreover Pharao said to Joseph, Behold I have set thee this day over all the land of Egypt.
BrentonAnd Pharao said to Joseph, Behold, I set thee this day over all the land of Egypt.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ Φαραὼ τῷ Ἰωσὴφ, ἰδοὺ καθίστημί σε σήμερον ἐπὶ πάσῃ γῇ Αἰγύπτου.

ThomsonAnd Pharao took off the ring from his own hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him with a cotton robe, and put a chain of gold about his neck;
BrentonAnd Pharao took his ring off his hand, and put it on the hand of Joseph, and put on him a robe of fine linen, and put a necklace of gold about his neck.

Thomsonand caused him to mount a chariot next to that of his own. And a herald made proclamation before him. And when he had set him over all the land of Egypt,

ThomsonPharao said to Joseph, I am Pharao. Without thee no man shall lift up his hand in all the land of Egypt.

ThomsonAnd Pharao called Joseph’s name Psonthomphanech* and gave him Aseneth a daughter of Petephres the priest of Heliopolis to be his wife.
BrentonAnd Pharao called the name of Joseph, Psonthomphanech; and he gave him Aseneth, the daughter of Petephres, priest of Heliopolis, to wife.

ThomsonNow Joseph was thirty years old, when he stood before Pharao king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharao and went through all the land of Egypt.
