ThomsonSo when they had eaten up the corn which they brought from Egypt their father said to them, Go again and buy for us a little food.
BrentonAnd it came to pass, when they had finished eating the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, that their father said to them, Go again; buy us a little food.
GreekἘγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα συνετέλεσαν καταφαγεῖν τὸν σῖτον, ὃν ἤνεγκαν ἐξ Αἰγύπτου, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ πατὴρ αὐτῶν, πάλιν πορευθέντες πρίασθε ἡμῖν μικρὰ βρώματα.

ThomsonWhereupon Juda spoke to him and said, The man who is the lord of the country solemnly protested saying, You shall not see my face, unless your youngest brother be with you.
BrentonAnd Judas spoke to him, saying, The man, the lord of the country, positively testified to us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, unless your younger brother be with you.

ThomsonBut if thou wilt not send our brother with us we will not go. For the man spoke to us saying, You shall not see my face unless your youngest brother be with you.

ThomsonAnd Israel said, Why did you do me this ill in telling the man that you had a brother?
BrentonAnd Israel said, Why did ye harm me, inasmuch as ye told the man that ye had a brother?
GreekΕἶπε δὲ Ἰσραὴλ, τί ἐκακοποιήσατέ με, ἀναγγείλαντες τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ὅτι ἐστὶν ὑμῖν ἀδελφός;

ThomsonAnd they said, The man examined us strictly touching our family and said, Is your father alive? And have you a brother? And we answered him according to this examination. Could we know that he would say, Bring your brother?
BrentonAnd they said, The man closely questioned us about our family also, saying, Does your father yet live, and have ye a brother? and we answered him according to this question: did we know that he would say to us, Bring your brother?
GreekΟἱ δὲ εἶπαν, ἐρωτῶν ἐπηρώτησεν ἡμᾶς ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ τὴν γενεὰν ἡμῶν, λέγων, εἰ ἔτι ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ζῇ, καὶ εἰ ἔστιν ὑμῖν ἀδελφός· καὶ ἀπηγγείλαμεν αὐτῷ κατὰ τὴν ἐπερώτησιν ταύτην· μὴ ᾔδειμεν ὅτι ἐρεῖ ἡμῖν, ἀγάγετε τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὑμῶν;

ThomsonMoreover Juda said to his father Israel, Send thy son with me and we will arise and go that we may live and not die, both we and thou and all that we have.
BrentonAnd Judas said to his father Israel, Send the boy with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, both we and thou, and our store.

ThomsonI undertake the charge of him. At my hand require him. If I bring him not back to thee and set him before thee let me be a sinner against thee for ever.
BrentonAnd I engage for him; at my hand do thou require him; if I bring him not to thee, and place him before thee, I shall be guilty toward thee for ever.
GreekἘγὼ δὲ ἐκδέχομαι αὐτόν· ἐκ χειρός μου ζήτησον αὐτόν· ἐὰν μὴ ἀγάγω αὐτὸν πρός σε, καὶ στήσω αὐτὸν ἐναντίον σου, ἡμαρτηκὼς ἔσομαι εἰς σὲ πάσας τὰς ἡμέραν.

ThomsonThen Israel their father said to them, If it must be so, do this, Take of all the fruits of this land in your vessels and carry down for the man presents of balm and honey and incense both stacte and terebinthus and almonds.
BrentonAnd Israel, their father, said to them, If it be so, do this; take of the fruits of the earth in your vessels, and carry down to the man presents of gum and honey, and frankincense, and stacte, and turpentine, and walnuts.

ThomsonTake also double money in your hands and carry back the money which was returned in your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake.

ThomsonAnd may my God grant you favour in the sight of the man that he may send back your brother with Benjamin. As for me I am bereaved of children as I have been bereaved.
BrentonAnd my God give you favour in the sight of the man, and send away your other brother, and Benjamin, for I accordingly as I have been bereaved, am bereaved.

ThomsonSo the men took the presents and the double money in their hands and Benjamin and arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
BrentonAnd the men having taken these presents, and the double money, took in their hands also Benjamin; and they rose up and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.

ThomsonAnd when Joseph saw them and Benjamin his brother by the same mother he said to his steward, conduct these men into the house and kill victims and make ready, for these men are to dine with me at noon.
BrentonAnd Joseph saw them and his brother Benjamin, born of the same mother; and he said to the steward of his household, Bring the men into the house, and slay beasts and make ready, for the men are to eat bread with me at noon.

ThomsonSo the man did as Joseph ordered and conducted them to Joseph’s house.
BrentonAnd the man did as Joseph said; and he brought the men into the house of Joseph.
GreekἘποίησε δὲ ὁ ἄνθρωπος καθὰ εἶπεν Ἰωσήφ· καὶ εἰσήγαγε τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ἰωσήφ.

ThomsonAnd when the men saw that they were conducted to Joseph’s house, they said, On account of the money which was returned in our bags in the former journey we are brought in for the purpose of accusing us and charging us with it, that he may make us slaves and take our asses.
BrentonAnd the men, when they perceived that they were brought into the house of Joseph, said, We are brought in because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first; even in order to inform against us, and lay it to our charge; to take us for servants, and our asses.
GreekἸδόντες δὲ οἱ ἄνδρες ὅτι εἰσήχθησαν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Ἰωσήφ, εἶπαν, διὰ τὸ ἀργύριον τὸ ἀποστραφὲν ἐν τοῖς μαρσίπποις ἡμῶν τὴν ἀρχὴν, ἡμεῖς εἰσαγόμεθα, τοῦ συκοφαντῆσαι ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐπιθέσθαι ἡμῖν, τοῦ λαβεῖν ἡμᾶς εἰς παῖδας, καὶ τοὺς ὄνους ἡμῶν.

ThomsonTherefore they went near to the man the steward of Joseph’s house and spoke to him at the gate of the

Thomsonbut when we came to the lodging place and opened our bags every man’s money was in his bag. This money we have now brought back in our hands in full weight.
BrentonAnd it came to pass, when we came to unlade, and opened our sacks, there was also this money of each in his sack; we have now brought back our money by weight in our hands.
GreekἘγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἤλθομεν εἰς τὸ καταλῦσαι, καὶ ἠνοίξαμεν τοὺς μαρσίππους ἡμῶν, καὶ τόδε τὸ ἀργύριον ἑκάστου ἐν τῷ μαρσίππῳ αὐτοῦ· τὸ ἀργύριον ἡμῶν ἐν σταθμῷ ἀπεστρέψαμεν νῦν ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν ἡμῶν.

ThomsonAnd we have brought with us other money to buy provisions—Who put the money into our bags we do not know.
BrentonAnd we have brought other money with us to buy food; we know not who put the money into our sacks.
GreekΚαὶ ἀργύριον ἕτερον ἠνέγκαμεν μεθʼ ἑαυτῶν, ἀγοράσαι βρώματα· οὐκ οἴδαμεν τίς ἐνέβαλεν τὸ ἀργύριον εἰς τοὺς μαρσίππους ἡμῶν.

ThomsonUpon which he said to them, Peace be to you: fear not, your God and the God of your fathers hath given you treasures in your bags. But as for your money, with perfect good will I decline receiving it. Then he brought out Symeon to them
BrentonAnd he said to them, God deal mercifully with you; be not afraid; your God, and the God of your fathers, has given you treasures in your sacks, and I have enough of your good money. And he brought Symeon out to them.

ThomsonSo when Joseph came home they brought him the presents which they had in their hands into the house and made obeisance to him with their face on the ground.

ThomsonAnd he asked them of their welfare and said to them, Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still living?

ThomsonAnd they said, Thy servant, our father is well. He is still alive. And he said, Blessed of God is that man. Whereupon they bowed down and made obeisance to him.

ThomsonAnd when Joseph raised his eyes and saw Benjamin his brother by the same mother, he said, This is your youngest brother whom you promised to bring to me? Then he said, God be gracious to thee, my son.
BrentonAnd Joseph lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, born of the same mother; and he said, Is this your younger brother, whom ye spoke of bringing to me? and he said, God have mercy on thee, my son.

ThomsonSo they served up for him by himself and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians who dined with him, by themselves. For the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews. For that to the Egyptians is an abomination.
BrentonAnd they set on bread for him alone, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians feasting with him by themselves, for the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews, for it is an abomination to the Egyptians.

ThomsonAnd they sat before him, the first-born according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth. And the men were astonished, one at another.
BrentonAnd they sat before him, the first-born according to his seniority, and the younger according to his youth; and the men looked with amazement every one at his brother.
GreekἘκάθισαν δὲ ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ, ὁ πρωτότοκος κατὰ τὰ πρεσβεῖα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὁ νεώτερος κατὰ τὴν νεότητα αὐτοῦ· ἐξίσταντο δὲ οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonAnd when they received their several messes from him, the mess of Benjamin was five times larger than any of theirs.
BrentonAnd they took their portions from him to themselves; but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as the portions of the others. And they drank and were filled with drink with him.
