Thomson(p) HEAR these things, ye priests; and attend, ye house of Israel; and ye household of the king, give ear. For against you is this indictment, because you are become a snare in the watchtower; and like a net spread upon Itaburion,
BrentonHear these things, ye priests; and attend, O house of Israel; and hearken, O house of the king; for the controversy is with you, because ye have been a snare in Scopia, and as a net spread on Itabyrium,
GreekἈκούσατε ταῦτα οἱ ἱερεῖς, καὶ προσέχετε οἶκος Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ὁ οἶκος τοῦ βασιλέως ἐνωτίζεσθε, διότι πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐστι τὸ κρίμα, ὅτι παγὶς ἐγενήθητε τῇ Σκοπιᾷ, καὶ ὡς δίκτυον ἐκτεταμένον ἐπὶ τὸ Ἰταβύριον,

Thomsonwhich they who hunt wild beasts have fixed up.
Brentonwhich they that hunt the prey have fixed: but I will correct you.
Greekὃ οἱ ἀγρεύοντες τὴν θήραν κατέπηξαν· ἐγὼ δὲ παιδευτὴς ὑμῶν,

Thomson(J) As for Me, I was your instructor. I acknowledged Ephraim, and Israel did not withdraw from Me. Now because Ephraim went a-whoring, Israel is polluted.
BrentonI know Ephraim, and Israel is not far from me: for now Ephraim has gone grievously a-whoring, Israel is defiled.
Greekἐγὼ ἔγνων τὸν Ἐφραὶμ, καὶ Ἰσραὴλ οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ· διότι νῦν ἐξεπόρνευσεν Ἐφραὶμ, ἐμιάνθη Ἰσραήλ.

ThomsonThey did not apply their thoughts to return to their God. For there is a spirit of whoredom in them, and they have not acknowledged the Lord.
BrentonThey have not framed their counsels to return to their God, for the spirit of fornication is in them, and they have not known the Lord.
GreekΟὐκ ἔδωκαν τὰ διαβούλια αὐτῶν τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν αὐτῶν, ὅτι πνεῦμα πορνίας ἐν αὐτοῖς ἐστίν· τὸν δὲ Κύριον οὐκ ἐπέγνωσαν.

ThomsonTherefore the haughtiness of Israel shall be humbled at His presence, and Israel and Ephraim shall be weakened for their iniquities. When Juda also shall be weakened with them,
BrentonAnd the pride of Israel shall be brought low before his face; and Israel and Ephraim shall fall in their iniquities; and Judas also shall fall with them.

Thomsonthey will go with sheep and young bulls to seek the Lord, but they shall not find Him, because He hath withdrawn from them.

ThomsonEphraim is become a desolation in the day of rebuke. (J) Among the tribes of Israel I have given faithful warnings.

ThomsonThe chiefs of Juda are become like the removers of boundaries; upon them I will pour out My fury like water.

ThomsonEphraim tyrannised over his adversary, he trampled down judgment. Because he set the example of going after vanities,

Thomsontherefore I will be like a terror to Ephraim, and like a goad to the house of Juda.

Thomsonfor I am like a panther to Ephraim, and like a lion to the house of Juda. When I tear, I will go and take and there shall be no deliverer.
BrentonWherefore I am as a panther to Ephraim, and as a lion to the house of Juda: and I will tear, and go away; and I will take, and there shall be none to deliver.
