ThomsonBUT the Lord will have mercy on Jacob, and will still make choice of Israel; and they shall rest in their own land; and the stranger shall be joined to them, and shall be added to the house of Jacob.

ThomsonThe nations shall take them and bring them to their place; and the house of Jacob shall possess them; when they shall be multiplied in their land, for men servants and for maid servants. And they who captivated them shall be captives; and they who domineered over them shall be brought into subjection.
BrentonAnd the Gentiles shall take them, and bring them into their place: and they shall inherit them, and they shall be multiplied upon the land for servants and handmaidens: and they that took them captives shall become captives to them; and they that had lordship over them shall be under their rule.

Thomsonand the trees of Lebanon rejoice over thee—and the cedars of Lebanon say, Since thou hast gone to rest, no woodsman is come up against us.
Brentonthe trees also of Libanus rejoice against thee, and the cedar of Libanus, saying, From the time that thou hast been laid low, no one has come up to cut us down.

ThomsonHades from beneath was in uproar to meet thee; for thee were roused all the giants who had ruled the earth. Having roused from their thrones all the kings of nations,
BrentonHell from beneath is provoked to meet thee: all the great ones that have ruled over the earth have risen up together against thee, they that have raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.

Thomsonthey will all accost thee saying: And art thou caught as we have been? And among us art thou enrolled?
BrentonAll shall answer and say to thee, Thou also hast been taken, even as we; and thou art numbered amongst us.

ThomsonIs thy pomp come down to Hades—all thy great festivity? Beneath thee they will strew corruption for a bed; and worms shall be thy covering.
BrentonThy glory has come down to Hades, and thy great mirth: under thee they shall spread corruption, and the worm shall be thy covering.

ThomsonHow is Lucifer fallen from heaven! He who was harbinger of the morning—he who sent messages to all the nations, is trampled down into the earth.
BrentonHow has Lucifer, that rose in the morning, fallen from heaven! He that sent orders to all the nations is crushed to the earth.

ThomsonThou indeed didst say in thy heart, I will ascend up into heaven; above the stars of heaven I will place my throne; I will seat myself on a lofty mountain—on the lofty mountains which face the north.
BrentonBut thou saidst in thine heart, I will go up to heaven, I will set my throne above the stars of heaven: I will sit on a lofty mount, on the lofty mountains toward the north:

ThomsonBut thou shalt be cast out on the mountains, like an abominable corpse, with dying crowds, pierced with the sword, descending down to the mansion of the dead. [End of funeral song.]
BrentonBut thou shalt be cast forth on the mountains, as a loathed carcase, with many dead who have been pierced with swords, going down to the grave.

ThomsonAs a mantle stained with blood cannot be clean: for the same cause neither canst thou be clean. Because thou hast destroyed this land of Mine, and hast slain this My people; thou shalt not be of long continuance. Wicked seed,
BrentonAs a garment defiled with blood shall not be pure, so neither shalt thou be pure; because thou hast destroyed my land, and hast slain my people: thou shalt not endure for ever,— thou an evil seed.

Thomsonprepare thy sons for slaughter, for the sins of their fathers; that they may not rise and possess the land, and fill the world with wars.
BrentonPrepare thy children to be slain for the sins of their father; that they arise not, and inherit the earth, nor fill the earth with wars.

ThomsonI will indeed rise up against them, saith the Lord of Hosts, and destroy their name and remnant and seed. Thus saith the Lord:

ThomsonI will lay Babylonia waste: that porcupines may inhabit it; and it shall be a desolation. And I will plunge it in the miry gulf of destruction.
BrentonAnd I will make the region of Babylon desert, so that hedgehogs shall dwell there, and it shall come to nothing: and I will make it a pit of clay for destruction.

ThomsonI will destroy the Assyrians on this land of Mine; and on these mountains of Mine they shall be trodden down; and their yoke shall be removed from My people; and their reproach shall be taken from their shoulders.
Brentoneven to destroy the Assyrians upon my land, and upon my mountains: and they shall be for trampling; and their yoke shall be taken away from them, and their glory shall be taken away from their shoulders.

ThomsonThis is the counsel which the Lord hath taken against the whole empire, and this is the hand which is lifted high against all the nations.
BrentonThis is the purpose which the Lord has purposed upon the whole earth: and this the hand that is uplifted against all the nations.

ThomsonFor who can disannul what the Holy God hath decreed? and His hand which is lifted high, who can turn aside?
BrentonFor what the Holy God has purposed, who shall frustrate? and who shall turn back his uplifted hand?
GreekἋ γὰρ ὁ Θεὸς ὁ ἅγιος βεβούλευται, τίς διασκεδάσει; καὶ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ τὴν ὑψηλὴν τίς ἀποστρέψει;

ThomsonRejoice not, foreign tribes, with one accord, because the yoke of him who smote you is broken; for from the seed of a serpent will come forth young asps, and their offspring will be flying serpents.
BrentonRejoice not, all ye Philistines, because the yoke of him that smote you is broken: for out of the seed of the serpent shall come forth the young of asps, and their young shall come forth flying serpents.
GreekΜὴ εὐφρανθείητε οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι πάντες, συνετρίβη γὰρ ὁ ζυγὸς τοῦ παίοντος ὑμᾶς· ἐκ γὰρ σπέρματος ὄφεως ἐξελεύσεται ἔκγονα ἀσπίδων, καὶ τὰ ἔκγονα αὐτῶν ἐξελεύσονται ὄφεις πετάμενοι.

ThomsonFor the needy will be fed by Him; and in peace the needy will repose. But with famine He will destroy thy seed—even the remnant of thy seed He will destroy.
BrentonAnd the poor shall be fed by him, and poor men shall rest in peace: but he shall destroy thy seed with hunger, and shall destroy thy remnant.
GreekΚαὶ βοσκηθήσονται πτωχοὶ διʼ αὐτοῦ· πτωχοὶ δὲ ἄνθρωποι ἐπὶ εἰρήνης ἀναπαύσονται· ἀνελεῖ δὲ ἐν λιμῷ τὸ σπέρμα σου, καὶ τὸ κατάλειμμά σου ἀνελεῖ.

ThomsonRaise the mournful cry, ye gates of cities. O foreign tribes! let harassed cities scream with one accord: for a smoke is coming from the north, which cannot be endured.
BrentonHowl, ye gates of cities; let the cities be troubled and cry, even all the Philistines: for smoke is coming from the north, and there is no possibility of living.
GreekὈλολύξατε πύλαι πόλεων, κεκραγέτωσαν πόλεις τεταραγμέναι, οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι πάντες, ὅτι ἀπὸ βοῤῥᾶ καπνὸς ἔρχεται, καὶ οὐκ ἔστι τοῦ εἶναι.

ThomsonWhat then will the kings of nations say in reply?—namely, that the Lord hath founded Sion, and by Him the poor of His people shall be saved.
BrentonAnd what shall the kings of the nations answer? That the Lord has founded Sion, and by him the poor of the people shall be saved.
GreekΚαὶ τί ἀποκριθήσονται βασιλεῖς ἐθνῶν; ὅτι Κύριος ἐθεμελίωσε Σιων, καὶ διʼ αὐτοῦ σωθήσονται οἱ ταπεινοὶ τοῦ λαοῦ. ΤΟ ῬΗΜΑ ΤΟ ΚΑΤΑ ΤΗΣ ΜΩΑΒΙΤΙΔΟΣ.
