ThomsonWHAT aileth thee, that you are all now gone up to the housetops?
BrentonThe Word of the Valley of Sion. What has happened to thee, that now ye are all gone up to the housetops which help you not?
GreekΤί ἐγένετό σοι, ὅτι νῦν ἀνέβητε πάντες εἰς δώματα μάταια;

ThomsonThis vain city is full of people shouting. Thy slain are not slain with the sword; nor have thy dead died in battle.
BrentonThe city is filled with shouting men: thy slain are not slain with swords, nor are thy dead those who have died in battle.
GreekἘνεπλήσθη ἡ πόλις βοώντων, οἱ τραυματίαι σου οὐ τραυματίαι ἐν μαχαίραις, οὐδὲ οἱ νεκροί σου νεκροὶ πολέμων.

ThomsonAll thy chiefs have fled and they who are taken are cruelly bound. Even the mighty men in thee have fled far away.
BrentonAll thy princes have fled, and thy captives are tightly bound, and the mighty men in thee have fled far away.

ThomsonTherefore I said, Let me alone; let me weep bitterly: labour not to comfort me, for this distress of the daughter of my people.

ThomsonFor it is a day of trouble and destruction and treading down. There is indeed some wandering from the Lord of Hosts; in the valley of Sion they are wandering about; from the least to the greatest they are wandering on the mountains.
BrentonFor it is a day of trouble, and of destruction, and of treading down, and there is perplexity sent from the Lord of hosts: they wander in the valley of Sion; they wander from the least to the greatest on the mountains.

ThomsonBut the Elamites have taken up their quivers; and the horsemen have mounted their horses; and the army is arrayed in order for battle;

Thomsonand on they will come. Thy choicest valleys shall be filled with chariots;
BrentonAnd it shall be that thy choice valleys shall be filled with chariots, and horsemen shall block up thy gates.

Thomsonand the horsemen will block up thy gates, and burst open the gates of Juda; and look, on that day, into the choicest houses of the city;

Thomsonand lay open the stores of the houses of David’s citadel. They indeed know that they are many, and that the water of the old pool is turned into the city,

ThomsonYou have indeed provided water for yourselves, between the two walls nearer than the old pool, and have not looked to Him Who formed it of old, nor regarded Him Who created it.
BrentonAnd ye procured to yourselves water between the two walls within the ancient pool: but ye looked not to him that made it from the beginning, and regarded not him that created it.

ThomsonThough the Lord of Hosts, on that day called for mourning and lamentation, and for shaving of hair and girding with sackcloth,

Thomsonyet they indulged themselves in joy and gladness, slaying oxen and sacrificing sheep, that they might eat flesh and drink wine, saying, Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die.

ThomsonYes, these were their undisguised expressions in the hearing of the Lord of Hosts, therefore this sin will not be forgiven you till you die.
BrentonAnd these things are revealed in the ears of the Lord of hosts: for this sin shall not be forgiven you, until ye die.

Brentonand what hast thou to do here, that thou hast here hewn thyself a sepulchre, and madest thyself a sepulchre on high, and hast graven for thyself a dwelling in the rock?

ThomsonBehold the Lord of Hosts is now driving out and will utterly destroy men of rank, and He will take away thy robe and this gorgeous crown of thine,

GreekἸδοὺ δὴ Κύριος σαβαὼθ ἐκβάλλει καὶ ἐκτρίψει ἄνδρα, καὶ ἀφελεῖ τὴν στολήν σου καὶ τὸν στέφανόν σου τὸν ἔνδοξον,

Thomsonand whirl thee into a large immeasurable country, and there thou shalt die. And He will bring to disgrace thy splendid chariot, and make the house of thy chief a public walk.
Brentonand will cast thee into a great and unmeasured land, and there thou shalt die: and he will bring thy fair chariot to shame, and the house of thy prince to be trodden down.

Thomsonit shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim son of Chelkias,

Thomsonand clothe him with thy robe. And this crown of thine I will confirm to him, and I will commit to his hands this office of thine: and he shall be as a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to them who dwell in Juda.
Brentonand I will put on him thy robe, and I will grant him thy crown with power, and I will give thy stewardship into his hands: and he shall be as a father to them that dwell in Jerusalem, and to them that dwell in Juda.

ThomsonAnd I will give him the glory of David, and he shall rule and there shall be no antagonist; and on his shoulder I will lay the key of the house of David; and he will open and none shall shut; and he will shut and none shall open:
BrentonAnd I will give him the glory of David; and he shall rule, and there shall be none to speak against him: and I will give him the key of the house of David upon his shoulder; and he shall open, and there shall be none to shut; and he shall shut, and there shall be none to open.

Thomsonand I will make him a ruler in a sure place, and he shall be a throne of glory for the house of his father.

GreekΚαὶ στήλω αὐτὸν ἄρχοντα ἐν τόπῳ πιστῷ, καὶ ἔσται εἰς θρόνον δόξης τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonAnd on him will they rely with confidence, every honourable man in his father’s house, from the least even to the greatest. On him they shall be dependant in that day.

ThomsonThus saith the Lord of Hosts: The man who is now fixed in a sure place shall be removed and taken away and shall fall; and the glory which is on him shall be utterly destroyed, for the Lord hath spoken it.
BrentonThus saith the Lord of hosts, The man that is fastened in the sure place shall be removed and be taken away, and shall fall; and the glory that is upon him shall be utterly destroyed: for the Lord has spoken it.
