ThomsonThus said the Lord, Go to Sedekias king of Juda and say to him, Thus said the Lord, This city shall assuredly be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon; and he shall take it, and burn it with fire.
BrentonThus said the Lord; Make to thyself bonds and yokes, and put them about thy neck,
3
ThomsonAnd thou shalt not escape out of his hand. Thou shalt indeed be taken and delivered into his hands; and thine eyes shall see his eyes; and to Babylon thou shalt go.
Brentonand thou shalt send them to the king of Idumea, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the children of Ammon, and to the king of Tyre, and to the king of Sidon, by the hands of their messengers that come to meet them at Jerusalem to Sedekias king of Juda.
4
ThomsonNevertheless hear the word of the Lord, O Sedekias king of Juda, Thus said the Lord:
BrentonAnd thou shalt commission them to say to their lords, Thus said the Lord God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to your lords;
5
ThomsonThou shalt die in peace; and as they bewailed thy fathers who reigned before thee so will they bewail thee with, Alas Lord, and utter a lamentation for thee at thy burial; for I have spoken the word, said the Lord.
BrentonI have made the earth by my great power, and with my high arm, and I will give it to whomsoever it shall seem good in mine eyes.
6
ThomsonSo Jeremias delivered to king Sedekias all these words at Jerusalem when the army of the king of Babylon was warring against Jerusalem
BrentonI gave the earth to Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon to serve him, and the wild beasts of the field to labour for him.
8
ThomsonThe word which came to Jeremias from the Lord: After king Sedekias had made a covenant with the people to proclaim a release,
BrentonAnd the nation and kingdom, all that shall not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, with sword and famine will I visit them, saith the Lord, until they are consumed by his hand.
9
Thomsonthat every man should set free his man servant and his maid servant of Hebrew extraction so that no person of Juda should continue in slavery;
BrentonAnd hearken ye not to your false prophets, nor to them that divine to you, nor to them that foretel events by dreams to you, nor to your auguries, nor your sorcerers, that say, Ye shall by no means work for the king of Babylon:
10
Thomsonwhen all the nobles and all the people who had entered into covenant, to set free every one his man servant, and his maid servant,
Brentonfor they prophesy lies to you, to remove you far from your land.
11
Thomsonaltered their minds and compelled them to become their servants.
BrentonBut the nation which shall put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him, I will even leave it upon its land, and it shall serve him, and dwell in it.
12
ThomsonThereupon a word of the Lord came to Jeremias saying,
BrentonI spoke also to Sedekias king of Juda according to all these words, saying, Put your neck into the yoke,
14
ThomsonWhen six years are accomplished thou shalt set at liberty thy brother, a Hebrew, who shall be sold to thee. When he hath worked for thee six years, thou shalt let him go free.
Brentonand serve the king of Babylon. For they prophesy unrighteous words to you,
15
ThomsonBut they have not hearkened to Me, nor inclined their ear. And now, when they turned to do what is right in My sight, by proclaiming a general release, everyone to his neighbour, and had made a covenant in My presence in the house which is called by My name;
Brentonfor I sent them not, saith the Lord; and they prophesy in my name unjustly, that I might destroy you, and ye should perish, and your prophets, who unrighteously prophesy lies to you.
16
Thomsonyou have turned back and profaned My name by causing everyone his man servant, and everyone his maid servant whom you had sent away free at their own disposal, to return and become your servants.
BrentonI spoke to you, and to all this people, and to the priests, saying, Thus said the Lord; Hearken not to the words of the prophets that prophesy to you, saying, Behold, the vessels of the Lord's house shall return from Babylon: for they prophesy to you unrighteous words. I sent them not.
18
ThomsonI will indeed give up the men who have transgressed My covenant—them who have not stood to this covenant of Mine which they entered into in My presence. As the labouring bullock which they sacrificed,
BrentonIf they are prophets, and if the word of the Lord is in them, let them meet me, for thus has the Lord said.
19
ThomsonI will deliver up the chiefs of Juda and the rulers, and the priests,
BrentonAnd as for the remaining vessels,
GreekΚαὶ τῶν ἐπιλοίπων σκευῶν,
20
Thomsonand the people themselves to their enemies: and their carcasses shall be meat for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth:
Brentonwhich the king of Babylon took not, when he carried Jechonias prisoner out of Jerusalem,
22
Thomsonbehold I am about to issue orders, saith the Lord; and I will cause them to return to this city. And they shall fight against it, and take it and burn it with fire. And I will make the cities of Juda a desolation, without inhabitants.
Brentonthey shall go into Babylon, saith the Lord.
