1
ThomsonIN the fourth year of Joakim son of Josias, king of Juda, a word of the Lord came to me, saying,
BrentonAnd these are the words of the book which Jeremias sent from Jerusalem to the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, and to the false prophets, even an epistle to Babylon for the captivity, and to all the people;
2
ThomsonTake thee a roll of a book and write therein all the words which I have spoken to thee against Jerusalem and against Juda and against all the nations from the day I first spoke to thee—from the days of Josias king of Juda even to this day.
Brenton(after the departure of Jechonias the king and the queen, and the eunuchs, and every freeman, and bondman, and artificer, out of Jerusalem;)
3
ThomsonPerhaps the house of Juda will hear all the evils which I am purposing to do to them, that they may turn from their evil way and that I may be merciful to their iniquities and their sins.
Brentonby the hand of Eleasan son of Saphan, and Gamarias son of Chelcias, (whom Sedekias king of Juda sent to the king of Babylon to Babylon) saying,
4
ThomsonThereupon Jeremias sent for Baruch, son of Nerias, and he wrote in a book, from the mouth of Jeremias, all the words which the Lord had spoken to him.
BrentonThus said the Lord God of Israel concerning the captivity which I caused to be carried away from Jerusalem;
5
ThomsonThen Jeremias gave a charge to Baruch, saying, I am watched so that I cannot go to the house of the Lord;
BrentonBuild ye houses, and inhabit them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruits thereof;
6
Thomsontherefore thou shalt read from this roll in the hearing of the people in the house of the Lord on the fast day, even in the hearing of all Juda who come from their cities thou shalt read to them.
Brentonand take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, and be multiplied, and be not diminished.
7
ThomsonPerhaps they may find favour in the sight of the Lord and turn from their evil way, for great is the wrath and the anger of the Lord which He hath denounced against this people.
BrentonAnd seek the peace of the land into which I have carried you captive, and ye shall pray to the Lord for the people: for in its peace ye shall have peace.
8
ThomsonSo Baruch did according to all that Jeremias commanded him, that he might read from the book the words of the Lord in the house of the Lord.
BrentonFor thus saith the Lord; Let not the false prophets that are among you persuade you, and let not your diviners persuade you, and hearken not to your dreams which ye dream.
9
ThomsonAnd it came to pass that in the eighth year of the reign of Joakim, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and the house of Juda kept a solemn fast before the Lord.
BrentonFor they prophesy to you unrighteous words in my name; and I sent them not.
10
ThomsonAnd Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremias in the house of the Lord in the house of Gamarias son of Saphan the scribe, in the upper court at the vestibule of the new gate of the house of the Lord and in the hearing of all the people.
BrentonFor thus said the Lord; When seventy years shall be on the point of being accomplished at Babylon, I will visit you, and will confirm my words to you, to bring back your people to this place.
11
ThomsonAnd when Michaias son of Gamarias son of Saphan heard all the words of the Lord from the book,
BrentonAnd I will devise for you a device of peace, and not evil, to bestow upon you these good things.
12
Thomsonhe went down to the king’s house, to the house of the secretary; and lo! all the chiefs were there in council, namely, Elisama the secretary, and Dalias son of Selemias, and Jonathan son of Achobar and Gamarias son of Saphan and Sedekias son of Ananias and all the chiefs.
BrentonAnd do ye pray to me, and I will hearken to you: and do ye earnestly seek me, and ye shall find me;
13
ThomsonAnd when Michaias told them all the words which he had heard, which Baruch read in the hearing of the people,
Brentonfor ye shall seek me with your whole heart.
14
Thomsonall the chiefs sent Judin son of Nathanias son of Selemias, son of Chusi to Baruch, saying, Take in thy hand the roll thou art reading to the people and come. Accordingly Baruch took the roll and went down to them.
BrentonAnd I will appear to you:
Greekκαὶ ἐπιφανοῦμαι ὑμῖν·
15
ThomsonAnd they said to him, Read it again to us. So Baruch read it.
Brentonwhereas ye said, The Lord has appointed for us prophets in Babylon:
21
ThomsonAnd the king sent Judin for the book. And Judin having brought it from the house of Elisamas read it in the hearing of the king and in the hearing of all the chiefs who were standing round the king.
BrentonThus saith the Lord concerning Achiab, and concerning Sedekias; Behold, I will deliver them into the hands of the king of Babylon; and he shall smite them in your sight.
22
ThomsonNow the king was sitting in the winter house and there was a grate with fire in it before him.
BrentonAnd they shall make of them a curse in all the captivity of Juda in Babylon, saying, The Lord do to thee as he did to Sedekias, and as he did to Achiab, whom the king of Babylon fried in the fire;
23
ThomsonSo as Judin read three or four folds, he cut them off with the secretary’s knife and threw them into the fire in the grate, till the whole roll was consumed in the fire.
Brentonbecause of the iniquity which they wrought in Israel, and because they committed adultery with the wives of their fellow-citizens, and spoke a word in my name, which I did not command them to speak, and I am witness, saith the Lord.
24
ThomsonBut neither the king nor his servants, who heard all these words, made any inquiry nor rent their clothes.
BrentonAnd to Samæas the Ælamite thou shalt say,
25
ThomsonNay Elnathan and Godolias suggested to the king to burn the roll.
BrentonI sent thee not in my name: and to Sophonias the priest the son of Maasæas say thou,
26
ThomsonThen the king commanded Jeremeel the king’s son and Saraias son of Esriel to apprehend Baruch and Jeremias. But they had hid themselves.
BrentonThe Lord has made thee priest in the place of Jodae the priest, to be ruler in the house of the Lord over every prophet, and to every madman, and thou shalt put them in prison, and into the dungeon.
27
ThomsonAnd after the king had burned the roll—all the words which Baruch had written from the mouth of Jeremias, a word of the Lord came to Jeremias, saying:
BrentonAnd now wherefore have ye reviled together Jeremias of Anathoth, who prophesied to you?
GreekΚαὶ νῦν διατί συνελοιδορήσατε Ἱερεμίαν τὸν ἐξ Ἀναθὼθ, τὸν προφητεύσαντα ὑμῖν;
28
ThomsonTake thee another roll and write all the words which were in that roll which king Joakim hath burned,
BrentonDid he not send for this purpose? for in the course of this month he sent to you to Babylon, saying, It is far off: build ye houses, and inhabit them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
29
Thomsonand thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord: Thou hast burned that roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein and said that the king of Babylon shall surely come and lay waste this land, so that neither man nor beast shall be left therein?
BrentonAnd Sophonias read the book in the ears of Jeremias.
30
ThomsonTherefore thus said the Lord respecting Joakim king of Juda, He shall not have one to sit on the throne of David; and his carcass shall be exposed to the heat of the day and to the frost of the night;
BrentonThen the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, saying,
31
Thomsonand I will keep a watch upon him and upon his family and upon his servants and bring upon him and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the land of Juda all the evils which I have denounced against them and to which they have not hearkened.
BrentonSend to the captivity, saying, Thus saith the Lord concerning Samæas the Ælamite, Since Samæas has prophesied to you, and I sent him not, and he has made you to trust in iniquity,
32
ThomsonSo Baruch took another roll and wrote thereon from the mouth of Jeremias all the words of the book which Joakim had burned and to it were added more words similar to them.
Brentontherefore thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will visit Samæas, and his family: and there shall not be a man of them in the midst of you to see the good which I will do to you: they shall not see it.
