ThomsonAND all the generals of the army, with Joanan and Azarias son of Maasias, and all the people small and
BrentonThe Word that came to Jeremias from the Lord in the days of Joakim, king of Juda, saying,
2
Thomsongreat came to Jeremias the prophet and said to him, Have compassion on us, we beseech thee, and pray to the Lord thy God for this remnant; for we are left only few of many as thine eyes see.
BrentonGo to the house of the Archabin, and thou shalt bring them to the house of the Lord, into one of the courts, and give them wine to drink.
3
ThomsonNow let the Lord thy God point out to us the way which we should go and what we are to do.
BrentonSo I brought forth Jechonias the son of Jeremin the son of Chabasin, and his brethren, and his sons, and all the family of the Archabin;
4
ThomsonWhereupon Jeremias said to them, I have heard. Behold, I will pray for you to the Lord our God according to your words and whatever answer the Lord our God shall give, that I will declare to you. I will not hide anything from you.
Brentonand I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Joanan, the son of Ananias, the son of Godolias, a man of God, who dwells near the house of the princes that are over the house of Maasæas the son of Selom, who kept the court.
5
ThomsonAnd they said to Jeremias, The Lord be a true and faithful witness between us, that we will act conformably to the word, whatever it be, which the Lord shall send to us.
BrentonAnd I set before them a jar of wine, and cups, and I said, Drink ye wine.
6
ThomsonWhether it be agreeable or disagreeable we will hearken to the voice of the Lord our God in respect to that for which we send thee to Him, that it may be the better for us. We will obey the voice of the Lord our God.
BrentonBut they said, We will on no account drink wine, for our father Jonadab the son of Rechab commanded us, saying, Ye shall on no account drink wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:
7
ThomsonSo after ten days a word of the Lord came to Jeremias,
Brentonnor shall ye at all build houses, nor sow any seed, nor shall ye have a vineyard: for ye shall dwell in tents all your days; that ye may live many days upon the land, in which ye sojourn.
8
Thomsonwhereupon he sent for Joanan and the generals of the army, and all the people small and great,
BrentonAnd we hearkened to the voice of Jonadab our father, so as to drink no wine all our days, we, and our wives, and our sons, and our daughters;
9
Thomsonand said to them, Thus said the Lord,
Brentonand so as to build no houses to dwell in: and we have had no vineyard, nor field, nor seed:
10
ThomsonIf you will abide in this land I will build you up, and not pull you down; and I will plant you, and not root you up; for I am appeased by the evils which I have done to you.
Brentonbut we have dwelt in tents, and have hearkened, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.
11
ThomsonBe not afraid of the king of Babylon of whom you are in dread. Be not afraid of him, saith the Lord, for I am with you to deliver you, and to save you out of his hands.
BrentonAnd it came to pass, when Nabuchodonosor came up against the land, that we said we would come in; and we entered into Jerusalem, for fear of the host of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the host of the Assyrians: and we dwelt there.
12
ThomsonAnd I will shew you mercy, and have compassion on you, and bring you back to your own land.
BrentonAnd the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
13
ThomsonBut if in direct disobedience to the voice of the Lord you say,
BrentonThus saith the Lord, Go, and say to the men of Juda, and to them that dwell in Jerusalem, Will ye not receive correction to hearken to my words?
Greekοὕτως λέγει Κύριος, πορεύου, καὶ εἰπὸν ἀνθρώπῳ Ἰούδα, καὶ τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν Ἱερουσαλὴμ, οὐ μὴ λάβητε παιδείαν τοῦ ἀκούειν τοὺς λόγους μου;
14
ThomsonWe will not abide in this land, for we will go to the land of Egypt, that we may not see war nor hear the trumpet’s sound, nor pine for want of bread, and we will dwell there;
BrentonThe sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have kept the word which he commanded his children, that they should drink no wine; and they have not drunk it: but I spoke to you early, and ye hearkened not.
15
Thomsonthen hear the word of the Lord: thus said the Lord, If you set your face for Egypt, and go there to make your abode,
BrentonAnd I sent to you my servants the prophets, saying, Turn ye every one from his evil way, and amend your practices, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell upon the land which I gave to you and to your fathers: but ye inclined not your ears, and hearkened not.
16
Thomsonthe sword of which you are afraid shall find you in the land of Egypt; and the famine which you wish to avoid shall follow and overtake you in Egypt, and there you shall die.
BrentonBut the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have kept the command of their father; but this people has not hearkened to me.
17
ThomsonFor all the men, even all the strangers who have set their faces towards the land of Egypt to dwell there, shall perish by the sword and by famine, and not one of them shall escape from those evils which I bring upon them.
BrentonTherefore thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will bring upon Juda and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evils which I pronounced against them.
18
ThomsonFor thus said the Lord, As My wrath was poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall My wrath be poured out upon you, if you go to Egypt; and you shall be wasted and made slaves, and be for an execration and reproach; and shall never see this land again.
BrentonTherefore thus saith the Lord; Since the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have hearkened to the command of their father, to do as their father commanded them:
19
ThomsonThese are the things which the Lord hath spoken respecting you, the remnant of Juda; that you may not go to Egypt.
Brentonthere shall never be wanting a man of the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab to stand before my face while the earth remains.
