1
ThomsonNOW when the kings of the Amorites, who were on the border of the Jordan, and the kings of Phœnicia, who were on the sea coast, heard that the Lord God had dried up the river Jordan before the Israelites, when they crossed, their hearts were melted, and they were struck with consternation, and there was no spirit in them because of the Israelites.
BrentonAnd it came to pass when the kings of the Amorites who were beyond Jordan heard, and the kings of Phœnicia by the sea, that the Lord God had dried up the river Jordan from before the children of Israel when they passed over, that their hearts failed, and they were terror-stricken, and there was no sense in them because of the children of Israel.
2
ThomsonAnd at that time the Lord said to Joshua, Make thee stone knives of the hardest flint, and having again a fixed abode, circumcise the children of Israel.
BrentonAnd about this time the Lord said to Joshua, Make thee stone knives of sharp stone, and sit down and circumcise the children of Israel the second time.
3
ThomsonSo Joshua made sharp knives of stone, and circumcised the children of Israel at the place called Hill of foreskins.
BrentonAnd Joshua made sharp knives of stone, and circumcised the children of Israel at the place called the “Hill of Foreskins.”
4
ThomsonAnd in this manner Joshua purified the children of Israel—All who had been born on the way, and all who had formerly been uncircumcised, when they came out of Egypt,
BrentonAnd this is the way in which Joshua purified the children of Israel; as many as were born in the way, and as many as were uncircumcised of them that came out of Egypt,
5
Thomsonall these Joshua circumcised; for Israel had been led about forty-two years in the wilderness of Mabdaritis, therefore the most of them were uncircumcised, being the children of those warriors who came out of the land of Egypt, who disobeyed the commands of God, and to whom he denounced, that they should not see the land which the Lord solemnly promised their fathers that he would give—a land flowing with milk and honey;
Brentonall these Joshua circumcised; for forty and two years Israel wandered in the wilderness of Mabdaris—

Thomson
BrentonWherefore most of the fighting men that came out of the land of Egypt, were uncircumcised, who disobeyed the commands of God; concerning whom also he determined that they should not see the land, which the Lord sware to give to their fathers, even a land flowing with milk and honey.
7
Thomsonand instead of them he raised up these their children, whom Joshua circumcised, because, being born on the way, they were uncircumcised.
BrentonAnd in their place he raised up their sons, whom Joshua circumcised, because they were uncircumcised, having been born by the way.
8
ThomsonAnd being now circumcised, they were to continue there at rest, in the camp, until they were healed.
BrentonAnd when they had been circumcised they rested continuing there in the camp till they were healed.
9
ThomsonAnd the Lord said to Joshua son of Naue, This day I have taken away from you the reproach of Egypt. So he called the name of that place Galgala.
BrentonAnd the Lord said to Joshua the son of Naue, On this day have I removed the reproach of Egypt from you: and he called the name of that place Galgala.
10
ThomsonAnd on the fourteenth of the same month, towards evening, the children of Israel prepared the passover, on the confines of Jericho, in the plain of Jordan,
BrentonAnd the children of Israel kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, to the westward of Jericho on the opposite side of the Jordan in the plain.
11
Thomsonand ate of the corn of the land, unleavened cakes and parched corn. On that very day, after they had eaten the corn of the land,
BrentonAnd they ate of the grain of the earth unleavened and new corn.
12
Thomsonthe manna ceased, and there was no more a supply of manna for the children of Israel. So they foraged the country of the Phœnicians that year.
BrentonIn this day the manna failed, after they had eaten of the corn of the land, and the children of Israel no longer had manna; and they took the fruits of the land of the Phœnicians in that year.
13
ThomsonNow when Joshua was by Jericho, he raised his eyes, and saw a man standing before him, with a drawn sword in his hand, upon which Joshua, advancing,
BrentonAnd it came to pass when Joshua was in Jericho, that he looked up with his eyes and saw a man standing before him, and there was a drawn sword in his hand; and Joshua drew near and said to him, Art thou for us or on the side of our enemies?
GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἦν Ἰησοῦς ἐν Ἱεριχὼ, καὶ ἀναβλέψας τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον ἑστηκότα ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἡ ῥομφαία ἐσπασμένη ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ· καὶ προσελθὼν Ἰησοῦς, εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ἡμέτερος εἶ, ἢ τῶν ὑπεναντίων;
14
Thomsonsaid to him, Art thou one of us or of our enemies? And he said to him, I am the captain general of the Host of the Lord, just arrived. At this Joshua prostrated himself, with his face to the ground, and said to him, My lord, what dost thou command thy servant?
BrentonAnd he said to him, I am now come, the chief captain of the host of the Lord. And Joshua fell on his face upon the earth, and said to him, Lord, what commandest thou thy servant?
GreekὉ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ἐγὼ ἀρχιστράτηγος δυνάμεως Κυρίου, νυνὶ παραγέγονα. Καὶ Ἰησοῦς ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, δέσποτα, τί προστάσσεις τῷ σῷ οἰκέτῃ;
15
ThomsonAnd the Lord’s captain general said to Joshua, Loose the sandals from thy feet, for the place on which thou didst stand is holy ground.
BrentonAnd the captain of the Lord's host said to Joshua, Loose thy shoe off thy feet, for the place whereon thou now standest is holy.
