ThomsonIN those days there was no king in Israel; and in those days the tribe of Dan was seeking to take possession of a lot of inheritance for themselves; for even till that day they had not got possession of the inheritance in the midst of the tribes of Israel.
BrentonIn those days there was no king in Israel; and in those days the tribe of Dan sought for itself an inheritance to inhabit, because no inheritance had fallen to it until that day in the midst of the tribes of the children of Israel.

ThomsonSo the children of Dan sent from their communities five men of valour, from Saraa, and from Esthaol, to view the land and examine it thoroughly, and said to them, Go and examine the land thoroughly. And they went to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah.
BrentonAnd the sons of Dan sent from their families five men of valour, from Saraa and from Esthaol, to spy out the land and to search it; and they said to them, Go and search out the land. And they came as far as the mount of Ephraim to the house of Michaias and they lodged there,

ThomsonAnd when they lodged there, at the house of Micah, they perceived the voice of the young Levite, and turned aside there and said to him, Who brought thee here? and what art thou doing at this place? what business hast thou here?
Brentonin the house of Michaias, and they recognised the voice of the young man the Levite, and turned in thither; and said to him, Who brought thee in hither? and what doest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

ThomsonAnd he said to them, Thus and thus hath Micah done to me, and hired me, and I am become his priest.

ThomsonThen they said to him, Inquire, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether the journey in which we are engaged will be prosperous.
BrentonAnd they said to him, Enquire now of God, and we shall know whether our way will prosper, on which we are going.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, ἐπερώτησον δὴ ἐν τῷ Θεῷ, καὶ γνωσόμεθα εἰ εὐοδωθήσεται ἡ ὁδὸς ἡμῶν, ἐν ᾗ ἡμεῖς πορευόμεθα ἐν αὐτῇ.

ThomsonAnd the priest said to them, Go in peace. This journey of yours which you are going is before the Lord.

ThomsonSo the five men proceeded on and came to Laisa, and saw the people there dwelling securely. Their manner of living was tranquil like that of the Sidonians. There was none to reprove—none in the land to put them to shame for any thing. Possessing wealth they were spending it luxuriously; and they were at a great distance from the Sidonians, and had no intercourse with any man.
BrentonAnd the five men went on, and came to Laisa; and they saw the people in the midst of it dwelling securely, at ease as is the manner of the Sidonians, and there is no one perverting or shaming a matter in the land, no heir extorting treasures; and they are far from the Sidonians, and they have no intercourse with any one.

ThomsonMoreover they said, Arise and let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and behold it is very good, but still you continue quiet. You should not delay any longer to go and take possession of that land.

ThomsonAnd when you go, you will come upon a people living in security, though it is a large country; for God hath delivered it into your hands. It is a place where there is no want of any thing on earth.
BrentonAnd whensoever ye shall go, ye shall come in upon a people secure, and the land is extensive, for God has given it into your hand; a place where there is no want of anything that the earth affords.

ThomsonThen there went up thence, of the communities of Dan, from Saraa and Esthaol, six hundred men well equipped with all necessaries of war.
BrentonAnd there departed thence of the families of Dan, from Saraa and from Esthaol, six hundred men, girded with weapons of war.

ThomsonAnd in going up they encamped at Kariathiarim in Juda, for which cause that place is called The Camp of Dan to this day. Behold it is behind Kariathiarim.
BrentonAnd they went up, and encamped in Cariathiarim in Juda; therefore it was called in that place the camp of Dan, until this day: behold, it is behind Cariathiarim.

ThomsonAnd from that place they passed through mount Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah.

ThomsonAnd the five men who had gone to spy the land of Laisa, addressing their brethren, said, You know that at this house there is an ephod, and a theraphin, and a graven and a molten image; now consider therefore what you are to do.
BrentonAnd the five men who went to spy out the land of Laisa answered, and said to their brethren, Ye know that there is in this place an ephod, and theraphin, and a graven and a molten image; and now consider what ye shall do.

ThomsonUpon this they turned aside, and went to the house of the young Levite, to the house of Micah, and saluted him.
BrentonAnd they turned aside there, and went into the house of the young man, the Levite, even into the house of Michaias, and asked him how he was.

ThomsonWhile the six hundred Danites, who were equipped with implements of war, stood at the gate of the city,

Thomsonwhile the priest was standing there, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the theraphin, and the molten image. And when the priest said to them, What are you doing?
BrentonAnd they took the graven image, and the ephod, and the theraphin, and the molten image; and the priest said to them, What are ye doing?

Thomsonthey said to him, Hold thy peace, Put thy hand on thy mouth and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for thee to be the priest of the house of one man, than to be the priest of a tribe, and of the house of a community of Israel?
BrentonAnd they said to him, Be silent, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be the priest of the house of one man, or to be the priest of a tribe and house for a family of Israel?
GreekΚαὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, κώφευσον, ἐπίθες τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐπὶ τὸ στόμα σου, καὶ δεῦρο μεθʼ ἡμῶν, καὶ γένου ἡμῖν εἰς πατέρα καὶ εἰς ἱερέα· μὴ ἀγαθὸν εἶναί σε ἱερέα οἴκου ἀνδρὸς ἑνὸς, ἢ γενέσθαι σε ἱερέα φυλῆς καὶ οἴκου εἰς δῆμον Ἰσραήλ;

ThomsonAnd the priest’s heart was delighted. So he took the ephod, and the theraphin, and the graven, and the molten image, and went into the midst of the people.
BrentonAnd the heart of the priest was glad, and he took the ephod, and the theraphin, and the graven image, and the molten image, and went in the midst of the people.

ThomsonAnd they turned and went away, and sent the children, and the cattle, and the heavy baggage before them.
BrentonSo they turned and departed, and put their children and their property and their baggage before them.
GreekΚαὶ ἐπέστρεψαν καὶ ἀπῆλθον, καὶ ἔθηκαν τὰ τέκνα καὶ τὴν κτῆσιν καὶ τὸ βάρος ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν.

ThomsonAnd when they were at a considerable distance from the house of Micah, behold Micah and the men, the families adjacent to Micah’s house, uttered the shout of war and overtook the Danites.
BrentonThey went some distance from the house of Michaias, and, behold, Michaias and the men in the houses near Michaias' house, cried out, and overtook the children of Dan.
GreekΑὐτοὶ ἐμάκρυναν ἀπὸ οἴκου Μιχαία, καὶ ἰδοὺ Μιχαίας καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ ἐν ταῖς οἰκίαις ταῖς μετὰ οἴκου Μιχαία ἐβόησαν, καὶ κατελάβοντο τοὺς υἱοὺς Δάν.

ThomsonUpon which the sons of Dan turned about and said to Micah, What is the matter with thee that thou hast raised the shout of war?
BrentonAnd the children of Dan turned their face, and said to Michaias, What is the matter with thee that thou hast cried out?
GreekΚαὶ ἐπέστρεψαν οἱ υἱοὶ Δὰν τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν, καὶ εἶπαν τῷ Μιχαίᾳ, τί ἐστί σοι, ὅτι ἐβόησας;

ThomsonAnd Micah said, Because you have taken my graven image, which I made, and the priest; and have gone away. What more could have happened to me? Why then do you say to me, Why dost thou shout?
BrentonAnd Michaias said, Because ye have taken my graven image which I made, and my priest, and are gone; and what have I remaining? and what is this that ye say to me, Why criest thou?
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Μιχαίας, ὅτι τὸ γλυπτόν μου, ὃ ἐποίησα, ἐλάβετε, καὶ τὸν ἱερέα, καὶ ἐπορεύθητε· καὶ τί μοι ἔτι; καὶ τί τοῦτο λέγετε πρὸς μὲ, τί κράζεις;

ThomsonAnd the sons of Dan said to him, Let not thy voice be heard among us. Should warm spirited men come to an engagement with us they will endanger thy life, and the life of thy household.
BrentonAnd the children of Dan said to him, Let not thy voice be heard with us, lest angry men run upon thee, and take away thy life, and the lives of thy house.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ υἱοὶ Δὰν, μὴ ἀκουσθήτω δὴ φωνή σου μεθʼ ἡμῶν, μή ποτε συναντήσωσιν ὑμῖν ἄνδρες πικροὶ ψυχῇ, καὶ προσθήσουσι ψυχήν σου, καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν τοῦ οἴκου σου.

ThomsonThen the sons of Dan proceeded on in their march. And when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he returned to his house.
BrentonAnd the children of Dan went their way; and Michaias saw that they were stronger than himself, and he returned to his house.
GreekΚαὶ ἐπορεύθησαν οἱ υἱοὶ Δὰν εἰς ὁδὸν αὐτῶν· καὶ εἶδε Μιχαίας, ὅτι δυνατώτεροί εἰσιν ὑπὲρ αὐτόν· καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonSo the sons of Dan took what Micah had made, and the priest who was with him, and went to Laisa, to a people living at ease, and in a state of security, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and burned the city with fire.
BrentonAnd the children of Dan took what Michaias had made, and the priest that he had, and they came to Laisa, to a people quiet and secure; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.

ThomsonThere was none to deliver them, for they were far from the Sidonians, and had no intercourse with any man. It is situated in the valley of the house of Raab. And they rebuilt the city, and dwelt therein,

Thomsonand called the name of the city Dan after the name of their father Dan who was born to Israel.
BrentonAnd they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and the name of the city was Ulamais before.

ThomsonNow the name of that city formerly was Oulamais. And the children of Dan set up for themselves the graven image, and Jonathan, a Gersonite, son of Manasses, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites, even to the day of the capture of the Ark.
BrentonAnd the children of Dan set up the graven image for themselves; and Jonathan son of Gerson son of Manasse, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan till the time of the carrying away of the nation.

ThomsonThey indeed set up for themselves the graven image which Micah made, all the time the house of God was at Selom.
BrentonAnd they set up for themselves the graven image which Michaias made, all the days that the house of God was in Selom; and it was so in those days that there was no king in Israel.
