1
ThomsonTO Thee Who dwellest in heaven, I have raised mine eyes.
BrentonA Song of Degrees. If it had not been that the Lord was among us, let Israel now say;
2
ThomsonBehold! as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters—as the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord our God, till He be gracious to us.
Brentonif it had not been that the Lord was among us, when men rose up against us;
3
ThomsonHave mercy on us, O Lord; have mercy on us; for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
Brentonverily they would have swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us:
4
ThomsonOur soul is filled exceedingly—we are the scoff of the prosperous and the contempt of the haughty.
Brentonverily the water would have drowned us, our soul would have gone under the torrent.
5
Thomson
BrentonYea, our soul would have gone under the overwhelming water.
6
Thomson
BrentonBlessed be the Lord, who has not given us for a prey to their teeth.
7
Thomson
BrentonOur soul has been delivered as a sparrow from the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are delivered.
8
Thomson
BrentonOur help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
