ThomsonUNLESS the Lord build the house, the builders have laboured in vain. Unless the Lord guard the city, in vain hath the watchman watched—
BrentonA Song of Degrees. Blessed are all they that fear the Lord; who walk in his ways.
GreekὨδὴ τῶν ἀναβαθμῶν. Μακάριοι πάντες οἱ φοβούμενοι τὸν Κύριον, οἱ πορευόμενοι ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτοῦ.

Thomsonin vain is your early rising. Ye who eat the bread of care, rise when you have rested—when He hath given His beloved sleep.
BrentonThou shalt eat the labours of thy hands: blessed art thou, and it shall be well with thee.
GreekΤοὺς πόνους τῶν καρπῶν σου φάγεσαι· μακάριος εἶ καὶ καλῶς σοι ἔσται.

ThomsonBehold sons are an heritage of the Lord—a reward of the fruit of the womb.
BrentonThy wife shall be as a fruitful vine on the sides of thy house: thy children as young olive-plants round about thy table.
GreekἩ γυνή σου ὡς ἄμπελος εὐθηνοῦσα ἐν ταῖς κλίτεσι τῆς οἰκίας σου· οἱ υἱοί σου ὡς νεόφυτα ἐλαιῶν κύκλῳ τῆς τραπέζης σου.

ThomsonLike shafts in the hands of a mighty man, so are the sons of them who were shaken off.
BrentonBehold, thus shall the man be blessed that fears the Lord.
GreekἸδοὺ οὕτως εὐλογηθήσεται ἄνθρωπος ὁ φοβούμενος τὸν Κύριον.

ThomsonHappy he who shall satisfy his desire with these! They shall not be put to shame, when they speak to their enemies in the gates.
BrentonMay the Lord bless thee out of Sion; and mayest thou see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
