ThomsonTHE Lord is great and greatly to be praised; in the city of our God—on His holy mountain.

BrentonFor the end, a Psalm for the sons of Core.

GreekΕἰς τὸ τέλος, τοῖς υἱοῖς Κορὲ ψαλμός.

ThomsonTo the great joy of the whole earth, He is establishing firmly Sion’s mountains. On the sides to the north is the city of the great king.

BrentonHear these words, all ye nations, hearken, all ye that dwell upon the earth:

GreekἈκούσατε ταῦτα πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, ἐνωτίσασθε πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν οἰκουμένην,

ThomsonGod is known in its palaces, when He undertaketh its defence.

Brentonboth the sons of mean men, and sons of great men; the rich and poor man together.

Greekοἵ τε γηγενεῖς καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ἐπιτοαυτὸ πλούσιος καὶ πένης.

ThomsonFor lo! the kings of the land assembled—they came together.

BrentonMy mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall bring forth understanding.

GreekΤὸ στόμα μου λαλήσει σοφίαν, καὶ ἡ μελέτη τῆς καρδίας μου σύνεσιν.

ThomsonHaving taken a view they were so astonished; they were frightened, they were shaken:

BrentonI will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my riddle on the harp.

GreekΚλινῶ εἰς παραβολὴν τὸ οὖς μου, ἀνοίξω ἐν ψαλτηρίῳ τὸ πρόβλημά μου.

Thomsona trembling seized them: pangs were there as of a woman in travail.

BrentonWherefore should I fear in the evil day? the iniquity of my heel shall compass me.

GreekἹνατί φοβοῦμαι ἐν ἡμέρᾳ πονηρᾷ; ἡ ἀνομία τῆς πτέρνης μου κυκλώσει με.

ThomsonWith a tempestuous blast Thou wilt dash to pieces the ships of Tarsish.

BrentonThey that trust in their strength, and boast themselves in the multitude of their wealth—

GreekΟἱ πεποιθότες ἐπὶ τῇ δυνάμει αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ πλήθει τοῦ πλούτου αὐτῶν καυχώμενοι.

ThomsonAs we have heard, so have we seen; at the city of the Lord of armies—at the city of our God. God hath established it forever.

BrentonA brother does not redeem, shall a man redeem? he shall not give to God a ransom for himself,

GreekἈδελφὸς οὐ λυτροῦται, λυτρώσεται ἄνθρωπος; οὐ δώσει τῷ Θεῷ ἐξίλασμα ἑαυτοῦ,

ThomsonWe waited, O God, for Thy mercy, in the midst of Thy people.

Brentonor the price of the redemption of his soul, though he labour for ever,

Greekκαὶ τὴν τιμὴν τῆς λυτρώσεως τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐκοπίασεν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα,

ThomsonAccording to Thy name, O God; so be Thy praise to the ends of the earth. Thy right hand is full of righteousness.

Brentonand live to the end, so that he should not see corruption.

Greekκαὶ ζήσεται εἰς τέλος· ὅτι οὐκ ὄψεται καταφθορὰν,

ThomsonLet mount Sion be gladdened: and let the daughters of Judea exult for joy; because of Thy judgments, O Lord.

BrentonWhen he shall see wise men dying, the fool and the senseless one shall perish together; and they shall leave their wealth to strangers.

GreekὍταν ἴδῃ σοφοὺς ἀποθνήσκοντας, ἐπιτοαυτὸ ἄφρων καὶ ἄνους ἀπολοῦνται, καὶ καταλείψουσιν ἀλλοτρίοις τὸν πλοῦτον αὐτῶν.

ThomsonGo round Sion, and encompass it: make proclamation in the towers thereof;

BrentonAnd their sepulchres are their houses for ever, even their tabernacles to all generations: they have called their lands after their own names.

GreekΚαὶ οἱ τάφοι αὐτῶν οἰκίαι αὐτῶν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, σκηνώματα αὐτῶν εἰς γενεὰν καὶ γενεὰν, ἐπεκαλέσαντο τὰ ὀνόματα αὐτῶν ἐπὶ τῶν γαιῶν αὐτῶν.

Thomsonmark with attention its strength; and take a distinct view of its palaces: that you may tell another generation,

BrentonAnd man being in honour, understands not: he is compared to the senseless cattle, and is like to them.

GreekΚαὶ ἄνθρωπος ἐν τιμῇ ὢν, οὐ συνῆκε, παρασυνεβλήθη τοῖς κτήνεσι τοῖς ἀνοήτοις, καὶ ὡμοιώθη αὐτοῖς.

Thomsonthat He is our God forever and ever. He will tend us as a shepherd for evermore.

BrentonThis their way is an offence to them: yet afterwards men will commend their sayings. Pause.

GreekΑὕτη ἡ ὁδὸς αὐτῶν σκάνδαλον αὐτοῖς, καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν εὐλογήσουσι· διάψαλμα.

Thomson—

BrentonThey have laid them as sheep in Hades; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their help shall fail in Hades from their glory.

GreekὩς πρόβατα ἐν ᾅδῃ ἔθεντο, θάνατος ποιμανεῖ αὐτούς· καὶ κατακυριεύσουσιν αὐτῶν οἱ εὐθεῖς τοπρωῒ, καὶ ἡ βοήθεια αὐτῶν παλαιωθήσεται ἐν τῷ ᾅδῃ ἐκ τῆς δόξης αὐτῶν.

Thomson—

BrentonBut God shall deliver my soul from the power of Hades, when he shall receive me. Pause.

GreekΠλὴν ὁ Θεὸς λυτρώσεται τὴν ψυχήν μου ἐκ χειρὸς ᾅδου, ὅταν λαμβάνῃ με· διάψαλμα.

Thomson—

BrentonFear not when a man is enriched, and when the glory of his house is increased.

GreekΜὴ φοβοῦ ὅταν πλουτήσῃ ἄνθρωπος, καὶ ὅταν πληθυνθῇ ἡ δόξα τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ.

Thomson—

BrentonFor he shall take nothing when he dies; neither shall his glory descend with him.

GreekὍτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ ἀποθνήσκειν αὐτὸν λήψεται τὰ πάντα, οὐδὲ συγκαταβήσεται αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα αὐτοῦ.

Thomson—

BrentonFor his soul shall be blessed in his life: he shall give thanks to thee when thou dost well to him.

GreekὍτι ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ζωῇ αὐτοῦ εὐλογηθήσεται, ἐξομολογήσεταί σοι ὅταν ἀγαθύνῃς αὐτῷ.

Thomson—

BrentonYet he shall go in to the generation of his fathers; he shall never see light.

GreekΕἰσελεύσεται ἕως γενεᾶς πατέρων αὐτοῦ, ἕως αἰῶνος οὐκ ὄψεται φῶς.

Thomson—

BrentonMan that is in honour, understands not: he is compared to the senseless cattle, and is like them.

GreekἌνθρωπος ἐν τιμῇ ὢν, οὐ συνῆκε, παρασυνεβλήθη τοῖς κτήνεσι τοῖς ἀνοήτοις, καὶ ὡμοιώθη αὐτοῖς.
