1
ThomsonWHY boastest thou in mischief, O mighty man of iniquity? All the day long he devised injustice.
BrentonFor the end, a Psalm of David upon Maeleth, of instruction.
2
ThomsonThy tongue is like a sharp razor: thou hast practised deceit.
BrentonThe fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They have corrupted themselves, and become abominable in iniquities: there is none that does good.
3
ThomsonThou hast loved evil more than good—lying more than speaking the truth.
BrentonGod looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there were any that understood, or sought after God.
4
ThomsonThou hast loved all the decrees of destruction—a tongue practised in deceit.
BrentonThey have all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that does good, there is not even one.
5
ThomsonFor this cause God will utterly destroy thee—tear thee up and hurl thee from thy dwelling; even thy rooted stock out of the land of the living.
BrentonWill none of the workers of iniquity know, who devour my people as they would eat bread? they have not called upon God. There were they greatly afraid, where there was no fear:
6
ThomsonThe righteous will see indeed and be afraid. And they will laugh at him and say,
Brentonfor God has scattered the bones of the men-pleasers; they were ashamed, for God despised them.
7
ThomsonBehold the man who made not God his strength: and trusted in the abundance of his wealth; and strengthened himself in his vanity!
BrentonWho will bring the salvation of Israel out of Sion? When the Lord turns the captivity of his people, Jacob shall exult, and Israel shall be glad.
