ThomsonAND after many days, a word of the Lord came to Elias in the third year, saying, Go and shew thyself to Achab and I will send rain on the face of the land.
BrentonAnd it came to pass after many days, that the word of the Lord came to Eliu in the third year, saying, Go, and appear before Achaab, and I will bring rain upon the face of the earth.
2
ThomsonNow when Elias went to shew himself to Achab there was a grievous famine in Samaria.
BrentonAnd Eliu went to appear before Achaab: and the famine was severe in Samaria.
3
ThomsonAnd Achab had called his steward Abdiou. This Abdiou feared the Lord greatly;
BrentonAnd Achaab called Abdiu the steward. Now Abdiu feared the Lord greatly.
4
Thomsonso that when Jezabel smote the prophets of the Lord, Abdiou took a hundred men who were prophets, and hid them by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.
BrentonAnd it came to pass when Jezabel smote the prophets of the Lord, that Abdiu took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.
5
ThomsonAnd Achab said to Abdiou, Come and let us go through the land to the fountains of water and to the brooks, perhaps we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that they may not be utterly destroyed from our habitations.
BrentonAnd Achaab said to Abdiu, Come, and let us go through the land, and to the fountains of water, and to the brooks, if by any means we may find grass, and may save the horses and mules, and so they will not perish from the tents.
6
ThomsonSo they divided the way between them, that they might traverse the country. Achab went one way, and Abdiou went by himself another way.
BrentonAnd they made a division of the way between them to pass through it: Achaab went one way, and Abdiu went by another way alone.
7
ThomsonAnd as Abdiou was in the way by himself Elias came by himself to meet him. Whereupon Abdiou hasted and fell on his face and said, Art thou he, my lord Elias?
BrentonAnd Abdiu was alone in the way; and Eliu came alone to meet him: and Abdiu hasted, and fell upon his face, and said, My lord Eliu, art thou indeed he?
GreekΚαὶ ἦν Ἀβδιοὺ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ μόνος· καὶ ἦλθεν Ἠλιοὺ εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτοῦ μόνος· καὶ Ἀβδιοὺ ἔσπευσε καὶ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπεν, εἰ σὺ εἶ αὐτὸς, κύριέ μου Ἠλιού;
8
ThomsonAnd Elias said, I am, Go and tell thy master, Behold Elias is here.
BrentonAnd Eliu said to him, I am: go, say to thy master, Behold, Eliu is here.
9
ThomsonAnd Abdiou said, In what have I sinned that thou shouldst deliver thy servant into the hand of Achab, that he may put me to death?
BrentonAnd Abdiu said, What sin have I committed, that thou givest thy servant into the hand of Achaab to slay me?
GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν Ἀβδιοὺ, τί ἡμάρτηκα, ὅτι δίδως τὸν δοῦλόν σου εἰς χεῖρα Ἀχαὰβ τοῦ θανατῶσαί με;
10
ThomsonAs the Lord thy God liveth, there is not a nation or a kingdom to which my master hath not sent to seek thee. And if they said, He is not here, he burned the kingdom or its borders, because he did not find thee.
BrentonAs the Lord thy God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom, whither my lord has not sent to seek thee; and if they said, He is not here, then has he set fire to the kingdom and its territories, because he has not found thee.
11
ThomsonAnd now thou sayst, Go tell thy master, Behold Elias is here.
BrentonAnd now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Eliu is here.
12
ThomsonBut it may be, that when I am gone from thee, the Spirit of the Lord will carry thee away to a land which I know not. So that when I shall go and tell Achab, and he shall not find thee, he will kill me. Now thy servant is one who feareth the Lord from his youth.
BrentonAnd it shall come to pass when I shall have departed from thee, that the Spirit of the Lord shall carry thee to a land which I know not, and I shall go in to tell the matter to Achaab, and he will not find thee and will slay me: yet thy servant fears the Lord from his youth.
13
ThomsonHath it not been told thee, my lord, what I did when Jezabel slew the prophets of the Lord—how I hid a hundred men of the prophets of the Lord by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
BrentonHas it not been told to thee my lord, what I did when Jezabel slew the prophets of the Lord, that I hid a hundred men of the prophets of the Lord, by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
GreekἪ οὐκ ἀπηγγέλη σοι τῷ κυρίῳ μου, οἷα πεποίηκα ἐν τῷ ἀποκτείνειν τὴν Ἰεζάβελ τοὺς προφήτας Κυρίου, καὶ ἔκρυψα ἀπὸ τῶν προφητῶν Κυρίου ἑκατὸν ἄνδρας, ἀνὰ πεντήκοντα ἐν σπηλαίῳ, καὶ ἔθρεψα ἐν ἄρτοις καὶ ὕδατι;
14
ThomsonYet, now thou sayst, Go, tell thy master, Behold Elias is here, that he may kill me.
BrentonAnd now thou sayest to me, Go, say to thy master, Behold, Eliu is here: and he shall slay me.
15
ThomsonAnd Elias said, As the Lord of Hosts liveth, before Whom I stand, I will this day shew myself to him.
BrentonAnd Eliu said, As the Lord of Hosts before whom I stand lives, to-day I will appear before him.
16
ThomsonThen Abdiou went to meet Achab, and when he told him, Achab hastened and came to meet Elias.
BrentonAnd Abdiu went to meet Achaab, and told him: and Achaab hasted forth, and went to meet Eliu.
17
ThomsonAnd when Achab saw Elias,
BrentonAnd it came to pass when Achaab saw Eliu, that Achaab said to Eliu, Art thou he that perverts Israel?
GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο ὡς εἶδεν Ἀχαὰβ τὸν Ἠλιού, καὶ εἶπεν Ἀχαὰβ πρὸς Ἠλιοὺ, εἰ σὺ εἶ αὐτὸς ὁ διαστρέφων τὸν Ἰσραήλ;
18
Thomsonhe said to him, Art thou he, the troubler of Israel? To which Elias replied, I am not the troubler of Israel; but thou and thy father’s house are, by your forsaking the Lord your God and going after the Baalims.
BrentonAnd Eliu said, I do not pervert Israel; but it is thou and thy father's house, in that ye forsake the Lord your God, and thou hast gone after Baalim.
19
ThomsonNow therefore send and gather to me all Israel to mount Carmel, and the prophets of shame, four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the bowers four hundred, who eat at Jezabel’s table.
BrentonAnd now send, gather to me all Israel to mount Carmel, and the prophets of shame four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, that eat at Jezabel's table.
20
ThomsonAnd when Achab had sent to all Israel, and had assembled all the prophets at mount Carmel,
BrentonAnd Achaab sent to all Israel, and gathered all the prophets to mount Carmel.
21
ThomsonElias came near before them all, and Elias said to them, How long will you halt between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him: but if Baal; follow him. But the people made no reply.
BrentonAnd Eliu drew near to them all: and Eliu said to them, How long wilt ye halt on both feet? if the Lord be God, follow him; but if Baal, follow him. And the people answered not a word.
22
ThomsonThen Elias said to the people, I am left a prophet of the Lord myself alone. But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men, and the prophets of the Grove [of Baal] four hundred.
BrentonAnd Eliu said to the people, I am left, the only one prophet of the Lord; and the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men, and the prophets of the groves four hundred.
23
ThomsonLet there be given to us two young bulls, and let them choose one for themselves, and cut him in pieces, and lay them on wood, but put no fire; and I will prepare the other and put no fire.
BrentonLet them give us two oxen, and let them choose one for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire on the wood: and I will dress the other bullock, and put on no fire.
24
ThomsonAnd call ye on the name of your gods, and I will invoke the name of the Lord my God. And the god who shall answer by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, The proposal thou hast made is fair.
BrentonAnd do ye call loudly on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord my God, and it shall come to pass that the God who shall answer by fire, he is God. And all the people answered and said, The word which thou hast spoken is good.
25
ThomsonThen Elias said to the prophets of shame, Choose for yourselves one young bull and prepare it first; for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire to it.
BrentonAnd Eliu said to the prophets of shame, Choose to yourselves one calf, and dress it first, for ye are many; and call ye on the name of your god; but apply no fire.
26
ThomsonSo they took the young bull, and prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning till noon, and said, Hearken to us, O Baal! Hearken to us. But there was no voice. There was no answer; though they ran upon the altar which they had erected.
BrentonAnd they took the calf and drest it, and called on the name of Baal from morning till noon, and said, Hear us, O Baal, hear us. And there was no voice, neither was there hearing, and they ran up and down on the altar which they had made.
27
ThomsonAnd when it was noon, Elias the Thesbite mocked them, and said, Call louder; for he is a god; for he is engaged in meditation, or perhaps he is busy, or perhaps he is asleep, and must be awaked.
BrentonAnd it was noon, and Eliu the Thesbite mocked them, and said, Call with a loud voice, for he is a god; for he is meditating, or else perhaps he is engaged in business, or perhaps he is asleep, and is to be awaked.
28
ThomsonThen they called with a loud voice, and according to their custom cut themselves with knives and lancets till there was a gush of blood upon them,
BrentonAnd they cried with a loud voice, and cut themselves according to their custom with knives and lancets until the blood gushed out upon them.
29
Thomsonand prophesied till the approach of the evening. But when it was about the time when the sacrifice should ascend, Elias the Thesbite spoke to the prophets of the idols, and said, Desist now, and I will prepare my whole burnt offering. So they desisted, and went away.
BrentonAnd they prophesied until the evening came; and it came to pass as it was the time of the offering of the sacrifice, that Eliu the Thesbite spoke to the prophets of the abominations, saying, Stand by for the present, and I will offer my sacrifice. And they stood aside and departed.
30
ThomsonThen Elias said to the people, Draw near to me. And when all the people came near before him,
BrentonAnd Eliu said to the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him.
31
ThomsonElias took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of Israel, to whom the Lord had spoken, saying, Thy name shall be Israel;
BrentonAnd Eliu took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of Israel, as the Lord spoke to him, saying, Israel shall be thy name.
32
Thomsonand he built the stones in the name of the Lord, and repaired the altar which had been thrown down. Then he made a trench around the altar sufficient to contain two measures of seed,
BrentonAnd he built up the stones in the name of the Lord, and repaired the altar that had been broken down; and he made a trench that would hold two measures of seed round about the altar.
33
Thomsonand piled up the split wood upon the altar which he had made. He then divided the whole burnt offering in quarters, and laid it on the split wood. And when he had laid it in order upon the altar, he said, Bring me four pots of water and pour it on the whole burnt offering and on the split wood.
BrentonAnd he piled the cleft wood on the altar which he had made, and divided the whole-burnt-offering, and laid it on the wood, and laid it in order on the altar, and said, Fetch me four pitchers of water, and pour it on the whole-burnt-offering, and on the wood. And they did so.
34
ThomsonAnd when they had done so, he said, Do the same again. And when they had done this a second time, he said, Do it a third time. So they did it a third time,
BrentonAnd he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.
35
Thomsonand the water ran down about the altar and filled the trench with water.
BrentonAnd the water ran round about the altar, and they filled the trench with water.
36
ThomsonThen Elias raised his voice to heaven and said, O Lord, the God of Abraham and of Isaak and of Israel, hearken to me! O Lord, hearken to me this day by fire, And let all this people know, that Thou art the Lord God of Israel, and that I am Thy servant, and that by Thee I have done these works.
BrentonAnd Eliu cried aloud to heaven, and said, Lord God of Abraam, and Isaac, and Israel, answer me, O Lord, answer me this day by fire, and let all this people know that thou art the Lord, the God of Israel, and I am thy servant, and for thy sake I have wrought these works.
37
ThomsonHearken to me, O Lord! Hearken to me; and let this people know, that Thou art the Lord God, and that Thou hast turned the heart of this people back again.
BrentonHear me, O Lord, hear me, and let this people know that thou art the Lord God, and thou hast turned back the heart of this people.
38
ThomsonThereupon fire from the Lord fell down out of heaven and consumed the whole burnt offering, with the split wood and the water in the trench and the stones, and licked up even the dust.
BrentonThen fire fell from the Lord out of heaven, and devoured the whole-burnt-offerings, and the wood and the water that was in the trench, and the fire licked up the stones and the earth.
39
ThomsonThen all the people fell on their faces and said, Of a truth the Lord is God. He is very God.
BrentonAnd all the people fell upon their faces, and said, Truly the Lord is God; he is God.
40
ThomsonThen Elias said to the people, Seize the prophets of Baal. Let none of them escape. So they seized them and brought them to Elias, down to the brook Kison and slew them there.
BrentonAnd Eliu said to the people, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Eliu brings them down to the brook Kisson, and he slew them there.
41
ThomsonThen Elias said to Achab, Go up and eat and drink, for there is a sound of coming rain.
BrentonAnd Eliu said to Achaab, Go up, and eat and drink, for there is a sound of the coming of rain.
42
ThomsonSo when Achab went up to eat and drink, Elias went up to the top of Carmel, and having bowed down on the earth, he put his face between his knees and
BrentonAnd Achaab went up to eat and to drink; and Eliu went up to Carmel, and stooped to the ground, and put his face between his knees,
43
Thomsonsaid to his servant, Go up and look towards the sea. And when the servant looked and said, There is nothing, Elias said, Return thou again seven times.
Brentonand said to his servant, Go up, and look toward the sea. And the servant looked, and said, There is nothing: and Eliu said, Do thou then go again seven times.
44
ThomsonSo the servant returned seven times, and at the seventh time he said, Behold there is a little cloud like a man’s foot drawing up water. Whereupon he said, Go up and say to Achab, Prepare thy chariot and go down lest the rain overtake thee.
BrentonAnd the servant went again seven times: and it came to pass at the seventh time, that, behold, a little cloud like the sole of a man's foot brought water; and he said, Go up, and say to Achaab, Make ready thy chariot, and go down, lest the rain overtake thee.
45
ThomsonIn the meanwhile the heaven gradually darkened with clouds and wind, and there came on a great rain. And while Achab wept and was travelling on to Jezrael,
BrentonAnd it came to pass in the meanwhile, that the heaven grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Achaab wept, and went to Jezrael.
46
Thomsonthe hand of the Lord was upon Elias and having girded up his loins, he ran before Achab to Jezrael.
BrentonAnd the hand of the Lord was upon Eliu, and he girt up his loins, and ran before Achaab to Jezrael.
