ThomsonIN the third year of the reign of Joakim king of Juda, Nabuchodonosar the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

ThomsonAnd the Lord delivered into his hand Joakim king of Juda and a part of the vessels of the house of God, which he carried to the land of Sennaar to the house of his god. And having deposited the vessels in the treasure house of his god,

Thomsonthe king ordered Asphanez, his high chamberlain, to bring in of the children of the captivity of Israel, namely, of the seed royal and of the nobility,

Thomsonsome youths who had no blemish, and who were of a good countenance, studious of every science, improved in knowledge and understanding and qualified to stand in the house before the king; and to instruct them in the learning and language of the Chaldeans.
Brentonyoung men in whom was no blemish, and beautiful in appearance, and skilled in all wisdom, and possessing knowledge, and acquainted with prudence, and who had ability to stand in the house before the king, and the king gave commandment to teach them the learning and language of the Chaldeans.

ThomsonAnd the king ordered them a daily allowance from the king’s table, and from the wine for his own drinking; and that they should be dieted for three years and after that stand before the king.
BrentonAnd the king appointed them a daily portion from the king's table, and from the wine which he drank; and gave orders to nourish them three years, and that afterwards they should stand before the king.

ThomsonAnd Daniel having resolved not to pollute himself with the table of the king nor with the wine which he drank, entreated the chamberlain that he might not be defiled.
BrentonAnd Daniel purposed in his heart, that he would not defile himself with the king's table, nor with the wine of his drink: and he intreated the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

ThomsonTherefore the chamberlain said to Daniel, I am afraid of my lord the king who hath appointed your meat and your drink. Perhaps he may see your countenance more uncomely than the youths of your age, and you may endanger my head with the king.
BrentonAnd the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your meat and your drink, lest he see your countenances gloomy in comparison of the young men your equals; so shall ye endanger my head to the king.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἀρχιευνοῦχος τῷ Δανιὴλ, φοβοῦμαι ἐγὼ τὸν κύριόν μου τὸν βασιλέα, τὸν ἐκτάξαντα τὴν βρῶσιν ὑμῶν καὶ τὴν πόσιν ὑμῶν, μήποτε ἴδῃ τὰ πρόσωπα ὑμῶν σκυθρωπὰ παρὰ τὰ παιδάρια τὰ συνήλικα ὑμῶν, καὶ καταδικάσητε τὴν κεφαλήν μου τῷ βασιλεῖ.

Thomsonand let our countenances and the countenances of the youths who eat of the king’s table be examined in thy presence; and, as thou [then] seest, deal with thy servants.
Brentonand let our countenances be seen by thee, and the countenances of the children that eat at the king's table; and deal with thy servants according as thou shalt see.

BrentonAnd he hearkened to them, and proved them ten days.

ThomsonAnd at the end of the ten days their countenances appeared more comely and their flesh firmer than that of the youths, who had eaten of the king’s table;
BrentonAnd at the end of the ten days their countenances appeared fairer and stouter in flesh than the children that fed at the king's table.
GreekΚαὶ μετὰ τὸ τέλος τῶν δέκα ἡμερῶν, ὡράθησαν αἱ ἰδέαι αὐτῶν ἀγαθαὶ καὶ ἰσχυραὶ ταῖς σαρξὶν ὑπὲρ τὰ παιδάρια τὰ ἔσθοντα τὴν τράπεζαν τοῦ βασιλέως.

Thomsonwhereupon Amelsad took away the food and the wine for their drink and gave them vegetables.
BrentonSo Amelsad took away their supper and the wine of their drink, and gave them pulse.
GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο Ἀμελσὰδ ἀναιρούμενος τὸ δεῖπνον αὐτῶν, καὶ τὸν οἶνον τοῦ πόματος αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐδίδου αὐτοῖς σπέρματα.

ThomsonAnd, as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and understanding in all literature and science; and Daniel was skilled in all visions and dreams.
BrentonAnd as for these four children, God gave them understanding and prudence in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
GreekΚαὶ τὰ παιδάρια ταῦτα οἱ τέσσαρες αὐτοὶ, ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Θεὸς σύνεσιν καὶ φρόνησιν ἐν πάσῃ γραμματικῇ καὶ σοφίᾳ· καὶ Δανιὴλ συνῆκεν ἐν πάσῃ ὁράσει καὶ ἐνυπνίοις.

ThomsonAnd at the end of the years which the king had appointed for introducing them, the high chamberlain brought them in before Nabuchodonosar.
BrentonAnd at the end of the days, after which the king had given orders to bring them in, then the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nabuchodonosor.
GreekΚαὶ μετὰ τὸ τέλος τῶν ἡμερῶν, ὧν εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰσαγαγεῖν αὐτοὺς, καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ὁ ἀρχιευνοῦχος ἐναντίον Ναβουχοδονόσορ.

ThomsonAnd the king conversed with them. And among them all there were none found equal to Daniel and Ananias and Misael and Azarias. So they stood before the king.
BrentonAnd the king spoke with them; and there were not found out of them all any like Daniel, and Ananias, and Misael, and Azarias: and they stood before the king.
GreekΚαὶ ἐλάλησε μετʼ αὐτῶν ὁ βασιλεύς· καὶ οὐχ εὑρέθησαν ἐκ πάντων αὐτῶν ὅμοιοι Δανιὴλ, καὶ Ἀνανίᾳ, καὶ Μισαὴλ, καὶ Ἀζαρίᾳ· καὶ ἔστησαν ἐνώπιον τοῦ βασιλέως.

ThomsonAnd in every subject of wisdom and science on which the king questioned them he found them ten times more skilled than all the soothsayers and the magicians who were in the realm.
BrentonAnd in every matter of wisdom and knowledge wherein the king questioned them, he found them ten times wiser than all the enchanters and sorcerers that were in all his kingdom.
GreekΚαὶ ἐν παντὶ ῥήματι σοφίας καὶ ἐπιστήμης ὧν ἐζήτησε παρʼ αὐτῶν ὁ βασιλεύς, εὗρεν αὐτοὺς δεκαπλασίονας παρὰ πάντας τοὺς ἐπαοιδοὺς καὶ τοὺς μάγους τοὺς ὄντας ἐν πάσῃ τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonAnd Daniel continued to the first year of Cyrus the king.
BrentonAnd Daniel continued till the first year of king Cyrus.
