ThomsonIN the eighteenth year of Nabuchodonosar, the king made an image of gold; the height of it was sixty cubits, and its breadth six cubits. And having set it up in the plain of Deeira, in the province of Babylon,

Thomsonhe sent for the presidents and the generals, and the governors, rulers and princes, and those in authority, and all the chiefs of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nabuchodonosar the king had set up.
BrentonAnd he sent forth to gather the governors, and the captains, and the heads of provinces, chiefs, and princes, and those who were in authority, and all the rulers of districts, to come to the dedication of the image.

ThomsonAnd when the governors, the presidents, the generals, the leaders, the great princes, those in authority, and all the chiefs of the provinces were assembled for the dedication of the image which Nabuchodonosar the king had set up, and were standing before the image,
BrentonSo the heads of provinces, the governors, the captains, the chiefs, the great princes, those who were in authority, and all the rulers of districts, were gathered to the dedication of the image which king Nabuchodonosor had set up; and they stood before the image.

ThomsonTo you peoples of different tribes and languages command is given; whenever you shall hear the sound of the trumpet and syrinx and of the cithara and sackbut and of the psaltery, and all kinds of musical instruments, prostrate yourselves and worship the golden image which Nabuchodonosar the king hath set up.
Brentonat what hour ye shall hear the sound of the trumpet, and pipe, and harp, and sackbut, and psaltery, and every kind of music, ye shall fall down and worship the golden image which king Nabuchodonosor has set up.

ThomsonAnd whoever will not prostrate himself and worship shall that very hour be cast into that fiery furnace which is heating.
BrentonAnd whosoever shall not fall down and worship, in the same hour he shall be cast into the burning fiery furnace.

ThomsonSo when the people heard the sound of the trumpet and syrinx, and of the cithara and sackbut, and of the psaltery, and all kinds of musical instruments, all the peoples, tribes and languages, falling prostrate, worshipped the golden image which Nabuchodonosar the king had set up.
BrentonAnd it came to pass when the nations heard the sound of the trumpet, and pipe, and harp, and sackbut, and psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the nations, tribes, and languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image which king Nabuchodonosor had set up.

Thomsonand who will not prostrate himself and worship the golden image, shall be cast into that furnace of fire which is heated.

ThomsonNow there are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the works of the province of Babylon; namely, Sedrach, Misach, Abdenago, who have not hearkened, O king, to thy decree. They neither serve thy gods, nor do they worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
BrentonThere are certain Jews whom thou hast appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, who have not obeyed thy decree, O king: they serve not thy gods, and worship not the golden image which thou hast set up.

ThomsonUpon this Nabuchodonosar in wrath and fury commanded to bring Sedrach, Misach, Abdenago; and when they were brought before the king,

ThomsonNabuchodonosar addressed them, saying, Is it true, Sedrach, Misach, Abdenago, that you do not serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?
BrentonAnd Nabuchodonosor answered and said to them, Is it true, Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, that ye serve not my gods, and worship not the golden image which I have set up?

ThomsonNow therefore are you ready, when you hear the sound of the trumpet and syrinx and of the cithara and sackbut and of the psaltery and symphony and all kinds of musical instruments, to fall prostrate and worship the golden image which I have made? For if you do not worship, you shall that very hour be cast into the furnace of fire, which is heated. And what god is there who can deliver you out of my hands?
BrentonNow then if ye be ready, whensoever ye shall hear the sound of the trumpet, and pipe, and harp, and sackbut, and psaltery, and harmony, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the golden image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, in the same hour ye shall be cast into the burning fiery furnace; and who is the God that shall deliver you out of my hand?

ThomsonIn reply to this, Sedrach, Misach, Abdenago said to the king Nabuchodonosar, We are at no loss to answer thee in respect to this matter.
BrentonThen answered Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, and said to king Nabuchodonosor, We have no need to answer thee concerning this matter.

ThomsonFor our God in heaven, Whom we worship, is able to deliver us out of the fiery furnace which is heated; and He will deliver us, O king, out of thy hands.
BrentonFor our God whom we serve is in the heavens, able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will rescue us from thy hands, O king.
GreekἜστι γὰρ Θεὸς ἡμῶν ἐν οὐρανοῖς, ᾧ ἡμεῖς λατρεύομεν, δυνατὸς ἐξελέσθαι ἡμᾶς ἐκ τῆς καμίνου τοῦ πυρὸς τῆς καιομένης, καὶ ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν σου βασιλεῦ ῥύσεται ἡμᾶς.

ThomsonBut even though He do not, be it known to thee, O king, that we cannot serve thy gods, nor will we worship the image which thou hast set up.
BrentonBut if not, be it known to thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the image which thou hast set up.
GreekΚαὶ ἐὰν μὴ, γνωστὸν ἔστω σοι, βασιλεῦ, ὅτι τοῖς θεοῖς σου οὐ λατρεύομεν, καὶ τῇ εἰκόνι ᾗ ἔστησας οὐ προσκυνοῦμεν.

ThomsonAt this Nabuchodonosar was filled with rage, and the form of his countenance was changed against Sedrach, Misach and Abdenago. And he ordered to heat the furnace sevenfold, till it was hot as possible;
BrentonThen Nabuchodonosor was filled with wrath, and the form of his countenance was changed toward Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago: and he gave orders to heat the furnace seven times more than usual, until it should burn to the uttermost.

Thomsonand commanded some strong men to bind Sedrach, Misach and Abdenago, and cast them into the furnace of fire which was heated.
BrentonAnd he commanded mighty men to bind Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.

ThomsonThen were these men bound, clad as they were with their Babylonish dress and with turbans and boots, and cast into the midst of the fiery furnace which was heated,

Thomsonas the command of the king was peremptory. But though the furnace was heated to an excessive degree,
Brentonforasmuch as the king's word prevailed; and the furnace was made exceeding hot.

Thomsonand these three men, Sedrach, Misach and Abdenago fell bound into the midst of the glowing furnace, yet they walked about in the midst of the flames, praising God and blessing the Lord.

ThomsonWhen Nabuchodonosar heard them singing praise he was amazed and starting up hastily said to his nobles, Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? And when they said to the king, True, O king,
Brentonand walked in the midst of the flame, singing praise to God, and blessing the Lord.

Thomsonthe king said, Here I see four men loose and walking about in the midst of the fire unhurt: And the appearance of the fourth is like a son of some god.
BrentonThen Azarias stood up, and prayed on this manner; and opening his mouth in the midst of the fire said,

ThomsonThen Nabuchodonosar went near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace and said, Sedrach, Misach, Abdenago, ye servants of the Most High God, come out and come hither. Upon which Sedrach, Misach and Abdenago came forth out of the midst of the fire.
BrentonBlessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers: thy name is worthy to be praised and glorified for evermore:
GreekΕὐλογητὸς εἶ Κύριε ὁ Θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, καὶ αἰνετὸς, καὶ δεδοξασμένον τὸ ὄνομά σου εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.

ThomsonAnd the satraps and the generals and the governors and the mighty men of the king gathered round and viewed the men with astonishment; for the fire had not had any power over their body. Even the hair of their heads was not singed, nor were their mantles changed, nor a smell of fire on them.
Brentonfor thou art righteous in all the things that thou hast done to us: yea, true are all thy works, thy ways are right, and all thy judgments truth.
GreekΟτι δίκαιος εἶ ἐπὶ πᾶσιν οἶς ἐποίησας, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἔργα σου ἀληθινὰ, καὶ εὐθεῖαι αἱ ὁδοί σου, καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ κρίσεις σου ἀλήθεια.

ThomsonThen Nabuchodonosar the king addressing them, said, Blessed be the God of Sedrach, Misach, Abdenago, Who hath sent His angel and delivered His servants. Because they have trusted in Him and have altered the king’s decree and delivered up their bodies to fire that they might not serve nor worship any god, but only their own God.
BrentonIn all the things that thou hast brought upon us, and upon the holy city of our fathers, even Jerusalem, thou hast executed true judgment: for according to truth and judgment didst thou bring all these things upon us because of our sins.
GreekΚαὶ κρίματα ἀληθείας ἐποίησας κατὰ πάντα ἃ ἐπήγαγες ἡμῖν, καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν τὴν ἁγίαν τὴν τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν Ἱερουσαλήμ· ὅτι ἐν ἀληθείᾳ καὶ κρίσει ἐπήγαγες ταῦτα πάντα διὰ τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν.

ThomsonTherefore I issue this decree: Every people, tribe, language, which shall utter any reproach against the God of Sedrach, Misach, Abdenago, shall be devoted to destruction and their houses to plunder: for there is no other god who can deliver in this manner.
BrentonFor we have sinned and committed iniquity, departing from thee. In all things have we trespassed, and not obeyed thy commandments,
GreekὍτι ἡμάρτομεν καὶ ἠνομήσαμεν ἀποστῆναι ἀπὸ σοῦ, καὶ ἐξημάρτομεν ἐν πᾶσι, καὶ τῶν ἐντολῶν σου οὐκ ἠκούσαμεν,

ThomsonThen the king reinstated Sedrach, Misach and Abdenago in the province of Babylon, and advanced them in dignity and honoured them with a command over all the Jews in his realm.
Brentonnor kept them, neither done as thou hast commanded us, that it might go well with us.
Greekοὐδὲ συνετηρήσαμεν, οὐδὲ ἐποιήσαμεν καθὼς ἐνετείλω ἡμῖν, ἵνα εὖ ἡμῖν γένηται.

BrentonWherefore all that thou hast brought upon us, and every thing that thou hast done to us, thou hast done in true judgment.
GreekΚαὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐπήγαγες ἡμῖν, καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησας ἡμῖν, ἐν ἀληθινῇ κρίσει ἐποίησας.

BrentonAnd thou didst deliver us into the hands of lawless enemies, most hateful forsakers of God, and to an unjust king, and the most wicked in all the world.

BrentonAnd now we cannot open our mouths, we are become a shame and reproach to thy servants, and to them that worship thee.

BrentonNevertheless in a contrite heart and an humble spirit let us be accepted. Like as in the burnt offerings of rams and bullocks, and like as in ten thousands of fat lambs:
