ThomsonWHEN thou seest thy brother’s ox or sheep going astray, thou must not overlook them. Thou shalt surely bring them back to thy brother, and restore them to him.

BrentonWhen thou seest the calf of thy brother or his sheep wandering in the way, thou shalt not overlook them; thou shalt by all means turn them back to thy brother, and thou shalt restore them to him.

GreekΜὴ ἰδὼν τὸν μόσχον τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου, ἢ τὸ πρόβατον αὐτοῦ, πλανώμενα ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ, ὑπερίδῃς αὐτά· ἀποστροφῇ ἀποστρέψεις αὐτὰ τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου, καὶ ἀποδώσεις αὐτῷ.

ThomsonAnd if thy brother be not near thee, and thou dost not know him; thou shalt take them home to thy house; and they shall be with thee, until thy brother seek them; then thou shalt restore them to thy brother.

BrentonAnd if thy brother do not come nigh thee, and thou dost not know him, thou shalt bring it into thy house within; and it shall be with thee until thy brother shall seek them, and thou shalt restore them to him.

ThomsonIn like manner thou shalt do with his ass, and in like manner with his raiment, and in like manner with everything which thy brother hath lost. Whatever hath been lost by him, if thou find it thou must not overlook it.

BrentonThus shalt thou do to his ass, and thus shalt thou do to his garment, and thus shalt thou do to every thing that thy brother has lost; whatsoever shall have been lost by him, and thou shalt have found, thou shalt not have power to overlook.

ThomsonA woman shall not wear what appertaineth to man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment; for everyone who doth such things is an abomination to the Lord thy God.

BrentonThe apparel of a man shall not be on a woman, neither shall a man put on a woman's dress; for every one that does these things is an abomination to the Lord thy God.

GreekΟὐκ ἔσται σκεύη ἀνδρὸς ἐπὶ γυναικὶ, οὐδὲ μὴ ἐνδύσηται ἀνὴρ στολὴν γυναικίαν, ὅτι βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ τῷ Θεῷ σου ἐστὶ πᾶς ποιῶν ταῦτα.

Thomsonif there chance to be before thee in the way, either in a tree, or on the ground, a bird’s nest, with young or eggs; and the dam be sitting on the young, or on the eggs; thou shalt not take the dam with the young.

BrentonAnd if thou shouldest come upon a brood of birds before thy face in the way or upon any tree, or upon the earth, young or eggs, and the mother be brooding on the young or the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young ones.

ThomsonThou shalt let the dam go; but thou mayst take the young for thyself; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayst prolong thy days.

BrentonThou shalt by all means let the mother go, but thou shalt take the young to thyself; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest live long.

GreekἈποστολῇ ἀποστελεῖς τὴν μητέρα, τὰ δὲ παιδία λήψῃ σεαυτῷ, ἵνα εὖ σοι γένηται καὶ πολυήμερος γένῃ.

ThomsonWhen thou buildest a new house, thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou mayst not occasion death by thy house, by anyone’s falling from it.

BrentonIf thou shouldest build a new house, then shalt thou make a parapet to thy house; so thou shalt not bring blood-guiltiness upon thy house, if one should in any wise fall from it.

GreekἘὰν οἰκοδομήσῃς οἰκίαν καινήν, καὶ ποιήσεις στεφάνην τῷ δώματί σου, καὶ οὐ ποιήσεις φόνον ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ σου, ἐὰν πέσῃ ὁ πεσὼν ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonThou shalt not sow thy vineyard, when the product of it is consecrated, with seed of another kind, that the seed which thou sowest may not be consecrated, with the product of thy vineyard.

BrentonThou shalt not sow thy vineyard with diverse seed, lest the fruit be devoted, and whatsoever seed thou mayest sow, with the fruit of thy vineyard.

GreekΟὐ κατασπερεῖς τὸν ἀμπελῶνά σου διάφορον, ἵνα μὴ ἁγιασθῇ τὸ γέννημα, καὶ τὸ σπέρμα ὃ ἐὰν σπείρῃς μετὰ τοῦ γεννήματος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνός σου.

ThomsonThou shalt make bunches of ribbons on the four tufts of the mantles with which thou clothest thyself.

BrentonThou shalt make fringes on the four borders of thy garments, with which soever thou mayest be clothed.

GreekΣτρεπτὰ ποιήσεις σεαυτῷ ἐπὶ τῶν τεσσάρων κρασπέδων τῶν περιβολαίων σου, ἃ ἐὰν περιβάλῃ ἐν αὐτοῖς.

ThomsonIf any man take a wife, and cohabit with her, and hate her,

BrentonAnd if any one should take a wife, and dwell with her, and hate her,

GreekἘὰν δέ τις λάβῃ γυναῖκα καὶ συνοικήσῃ αὐτῇ, καὶ μισήσῃ αὐτήν,

Thomsonand spread groundless reports concerning her, and give her an ill-name, and say, I took this woman to wife, but when I came to her, I did not find her tokens of virginity; thereupon the father and mother of the damsel taking the tokens of their child’s virginity,

Brentonand attach to her reproachful words, and bring against her an evil name, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her I found not her tokens of virginity:

Greekκαὶ ἐπιθῇ αὐτῇ προφασιστικοὺς λόγους, καὶ κατενέγκῃ αὐτῆς ὄνομα πονηρὸν, καὶ λέγῃ, τὴν γυναῖκα ταύτην εἴληφα, καὶ προσελθὼν αὐτῇ οὐχ εὕρηκα αὐτῆς τὰ παρθένια·

Thomsonshall carry them to the senate, to the gate.

Brentonthen the father and the mother of the damsel shall take and bring out the damsel's tokens of virginity to the elders of the city to the gate.

GreekΚαὶ λαβὼν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς παιδὸς καὶ ἡ μήτηρ ἐξοίσουσι τὰ παρθένια τῆς παιδὸς πρὸς τὴν γερουσίαν ἐπὶ τὴν πύλην.

ThomsonAnd the father of the girl shall say to the senate, I gave this my daughter to that man for a wife; but he now hateth her,

BrentonAnd the father of the damsel shall say to the elders, I gave this my daughter to this man for a wife;

GreekΚαὶ ἐρεῖ ὁ πατὴρ τῆς παιδὸς τῇ γερουσίᾳ, τὴν θυγατέρα μου ταύτην δέδωκα τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ γυναῖκα, καὶ μισήσας αὐτὴν

Thomsonand hath spread groundless reports concerning her, saying, I found not the tokens of virginity in thy daughter. Now these are the proofs of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall spread the garment before the senate of the city.

Brentonand now he has hated her, and attaches reproachful words to her, saying, I have not found tokens of virginity with thy daughter; and these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. And they shall unfold the garment before the elders of the city.

Greekνῦν οὗτος, ἐπιτίθησιν αὐτῇ προφασιστικοὺς λόγους, λέγων, οὐχ εὕρηκα τῇ θυγατρί σου παρθένια· καὶ ταῦτα τὰ παρθένια τῆς θυγατρός μου. Καὶ ἀναπτύξουσι τὸ ἱμάτιον ἐναντίον τῆς γερουσίας τῆς πόλεως.

ThomsonWhereupon the senate of the city shall take the man, and chastise him,

BrentonAnd the elders of that city shall take that man, and shall chastise him,

GreekΚαὶ λήψεται ἡ γερουσία τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐκεῖνον, καὶ παιδεύσουσιν αὐτόν,

Thomsonand fine him a hundred shekels, and give them to the father of the young woman, because he brought an ill-name on a virgin of Israel; and she shall be his wife. He shall not be at liberty to put her away all his days.

Brentonand shall fine him a hundred shekels, and shall give them to the father of the damsel, because he has brought forth an evil name against a virgin of Israel; and she shall be his wife: he shall never be able to put her away.

Greekκαὶ ξημιώσουσιν αὐτὸν ἑκατὸν σίκλους, καὶ δώσουσι τῷ πατρὶ τῆς νεάνιδος, ὅτι ἐξήνεγκεν ὄνομα πονηρὸν ἐπὶ παρθένον Ἰσραηλίτιν, καὶ αὐτοῦ ἔσται γυνή· οὐ δυνήσεται ἐξαποστεῖλαι αὐτὴν τὸν ἅπαντα χρόνον.

ThomsonBut if his accusation be founded in truth, and proofs of virginity cannot be found for the young woman,

BrentonBut if this report be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel;

GreekἘὰν δὲ ἐπʼ ἀληθείας γένηται ὁ λόγος οὗτος, καὶ μὴ εὑρεθῇ παρθένια τῇ νεάνιδι,

Thomsonthey shall carry out the young woman to the doors of her father’s house, and stone her with stones, till she die, because she hath committed folly in Israel, by making her father’s house a place of prostitution. So thou shalt remove evil from among you.

Brentonthen shall they bring out the damsel to the doors of her father's house, and shall stone her with stones, and she shall die; because she has wrought folly among the children of Israel, to defile the house of her father by whoring: so thou shalt remove the evil one from among you.

Greekκαὶ ἐξάξουσι τὴν νεᾶνιν ἐπὶ τὰς θύρας τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς, καὶ λιθοβολήσουσιν αὐτὴν ἐν λίθοις, καὶ ἀποθανεῖται, ὅτι ἐποίησεν ἀφροσύνην ἐν υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ ἐκπορνεῦσαι τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς· καὶ ἐξαρεῖς τὸν πονηρὸν ἐξ ὑμῶν αὐτῶν.

ThomsonIf a man be found lying with a woman who is married, you shall put them both to death; both the man who lay with the woman, and the woman. So shalt thou take away evil from Israel.

BrentonAnd if a man be found lying with a woman married to a man, ye shall kill them both, the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou remove the wicked one out of Israel.

GreekἘὰν δὲ εὑρεθῇ ἄνθρωπος κοιμώμενος μετὰ γυναικὸς συνωκισμένης ἀνδρί, ἀποκτενεῖτε ἀμφοτέρους, τὸν ἄνδρα τὸν κοιμώμενον μετὰ τῆς γυναικὸς, καὶ τὴν γυναῖκα· καὶ ἐξαρεῖς τὸν πονηρὸν ἐξ Ἰσραήλ.

ThomsonIf a virgin be betrothed to a husband; and a man find her in a city, and lie with her,

BrentonAnd if there be a young damsel espoused to a man, and a man should have found her in the city and have lain with her;

GreekἘὰν δὲ γένηται παῖς παρθένος μεμνηστευμένη ἀνδρί, καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτὴν ἄνθρωπος ἐν πόλει κοιμηθῇ μετʼ αὐτῆς,

Thomsonyou shall bring them both out to the gate of the city, and stone them with stones, till they die—the young woman, because she did not cry aloud in the city, and the man because he humbled the wife of his neighbour. So thou shalt remove evil from among you.

Brentonye shall bring them both out to the gate of their city, and they shall be stoned with stones, and they shall die; the damsel, because she cried not in the city; and the man, because he humbled his neighbour's spouse: so shalt thou remove the evil one from yourselves.

Greekἐξάξετε ἀμφοτέρους ἐπὶ τὴν πυλὴν τῆς πόλεως αὐτῶν, καὶ λιθοβοληθήσονται ἐν λίθοις, καὶ ἀποθανοῦνται· τὴν νεᾶνιν, ὅτι οὐκ ἐβόησεν ἐν τῇ πόλει· καὶ τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ὅτι ἐταπείνωσε τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ πλησίον· καὶ ἐξαρεῖς τὸν πονηρὸν ἐξ ὑμῶν αὐτῶν.

ThomsonBut if the man found the woman who was betrothed, in the field, and by force lay with her, you shall put him only to death who lay with her.

BrentonBut if a man find in the field a damsel that is betrothed, and he should force her and lie with her, ye shall slay the man that lay with her only.

GreekἘὰν δὲ ἐν πεδίῳ εὕρῃ ἄνθρωπος τὴν παῖδα τὴν μεμνηστευμένῃν, καὶ βιασάμενος κοιμηθῇ μετʼ αὐτῆς, ἀποκτενεῖτε τὸν κοιμώμενον μετʼ αὐτῆς μόνον.

ThomsonThe young woman is not guilty of death. As when a man hath risen up against his neighbour, and killed him, even so is this matter,

BrentonAnd the damsel has not committed a sin worthy of death; as if a man should rise up against his neighbour, and slay him, so is this thing;

GreekΚαὶ τῇ νεάνιδι οὐκ ἔστιν ἁμάρτημα θανάτου· ὡς εἴ τις ἐπαναστῇ ἄνθρωπος ἐπὶ τὸν πλησίον, καὶ φονεύσῃ αὐτοῦ ψυχήν, οὕτω τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο,

Thomsonfor he found her in the field. The young woman who was betrothed cried aloud, but there was none to help her.

Brentonbecause he found her in the field; the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to help her.

Greekὅτι ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ εὗρεν αὐτήν· ἐβόησεν ἡ νεᾶνις ἡ μεμνηστευμένη, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ βοηθήσων αὐτῇ.

ThomsonIf any man find a young woman, who is not betrothed, and by force lie with her, and be found,

BrentonAnd if any one should find a young virgin who has not been betrothed, and should force her and lie with her, and be found,

GreekἘὰν δέ τις εὕρῃ τὴν παῖδα τὴν παρθένον, ἥτις οὐ μεμνήστευται, καὶ βιασάμενος κοιμηθῇ μετʼ αὐτῆς, καὶ εὑρεθῇ,

Thomsonthe man who hath lain with her shall pay the father of the young woman fifty didrachms of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he shall not be at liberty to put her away, all the days of his life.

Brentonthe man who lay with her shall give to the father of the damsel fifty silver didrachms, and she shall be his wife, because he has humbled her; he shall never be able to put her away.

Greekδώσει ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ κοιμηθεὶς μετʼ αὐτῆς τῷ πατρὶ τῆς νεάνιδος πεντήκοντα δίδραχμα ἀργυρίου, καὶ αὐτοῦ ἔσται γυνή, ἀνθʼ ὧν ἐταπείνωσεν αὐτήν· οὐ δυνήσεται ἐξαποστεῖλαι αὐτὴν τὸν ἅπαντα χρόνον.
