ThomsonTHESE were the words of the covenant, which the Lord commanded Moses to state to the children of Israel, in the land of Moab, over and above thecovenant which He had made with them at Choreb.

ThomsonNow hath not the Lord God given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, even at this day?

ThomsonAnd when you came to this place, and Seon, king of Esebon, and Og, king of Basan, came out to meet us in battle, we smote them,

Thomsonyou shall therefore be careful to perform all the words of this covenant.

ThomsonIn order that you might fully comprehend all that you are to do, you have this day stood, all of you, before the Lord your God, the chiefs of your tribes, and your senate, and your judges, and your officers, every man of Israel,

Thomsonto enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, and into the curses which the Lord thy God this day stateth to thee,

ThomsonSo He Himself will be thy God, as He said to thee, and as He hath sworn to thy fathers, Abraham, and Isaak, and Jacob. Now I make this covenant, and this oath,

ThomsonInasmuch as you know how we lived in the land of Egypt,

Thomsonand have seen, as we passed through the nations, through which you passed, their abominations and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which are among them;
BrentonAnd ye beheld their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which are among them.

Thomsonis there any man among you, or any woman, or family, or tribe, whose understanding hath turned them from the Lord your God, to go and serve the gods of those nations? Is there any such root among you, springing up for gall and bitterness?
BrentonLest there be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart has turned aside from the Lord your God, having gone to serve the gods of these nations; lest there be in you a root springing up with gall and bitterness.
GreekΜή τις ἐστὶν ἐν ὑμῖν ἀνὴρ, ἢ γυνὴ, ἢ πατριὰ, ἢ φυλὴ, τινὸς ἡ διάνοια ἐξέκλινεν ἀπὸ Κυρίου τοῦ Θεου ὑμῶν, πορευθέντες λατρεύειν τοῖς θεοῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν ἐκείνων· μή τις ἐστὶν ἐν ὑμῖν ῥίζα ἄνω φύουσα ἐν χολῇ καὶ πικρίᾳ·

ThomsonNow in case anyone shall hear the words of this curse, and bless himself in his heart, saying, Good luck betide me! I will walk in the error of my own heart, that the sinner may not involve the guiltless in ruin with himself.
BrentonAnd it shall be if one shall hear the words of this curse, and shall flatter himself in his heart, saying, Let good happen to me, for I will walk in the error of my heart, lest the sinner destroy the guiltless with him:
GreekΚαὶ ἔσται ἐὰν ἀκούσῃ τὰ ῥήματα τῆς ἀρᾶς ταύτης, καὶ ἐπιφημίσηται ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ, λέγων, ὅσιά μοι γένοιτο, ὅτι ἐν τῇ ἀποπλανήσει τῆς καρδίας μου πορεύσομαι, ἵνα μὴ συναπολέσῃ ὁ ἁμαρτωλὸς τὸν ἀναμάρτητον·

ThomsonGod will not be propitious to him, but most assuredly the anger of the Lord, and His indignation, will then be kindled against that man; and all the curses of this covenant, which are written in this book, shall cleave to him;
BrentonGod shall by no means be willing to pardon him, but then the wrath of the Lord and his jealousy shall flame out against that man; and all the curses of this covenant shall attach themselves to him, which are written in this book, and the Lord shall blot out his name from under heaven.
GreekΟὐ μὴ θελήσει ὁ Θεὸς εὐϊλατεῦσαι αὐτῷ, ἀλλʼ ἢ τότε ἐκκαυθήσεται ὀργὴ Κυρίου καὶ ὁ ζῆλος αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ· καὶ κολληθήσονται ἐν αὐτῷ πᾶσαι αἱ ἀραὶ τῆς διαθήκης ταύτης, αἱ γεγραμμέναι ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τούτῳ· καὶ ἐξαλείψει Κύριος τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανόν.

Thomsonand the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven. The Lord will indeed separate him, from all the children of Israel, according to all the curses of this covenant, which are written in this book of the law.
BrentonAnd the Lord shall separate that man for evil of all the children of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in the book of this law.
GreekΚαὶ διαστελεῖ αὐτὸν Κύριος εἰς κακὰ ἐκ πάντων υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ, κατὰ πάσας τὰς ἀρὰς τῆς διαθήκης τὰς γεγραμμένας ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τοῦ νόμου τούτου.

ThomsonAnd when the generations to come—your children who shall rise up after you, and the stranger who may come from a far distant country, will say—when they shall see the plagues of that land, and the diseases thereof, which the Lord hath sent upon it—
BrentonAnd another generation shall say—even your sons who shall rise up after you, and the stranger who shall come from a land afar off, and shall see the plagues of that land and their diseases, which the Lord has sent upon it,
GreekΚαὶ ἐροῦσιν ἡ γενεὰ ἡ ἑτέρα οἱ υἱοὶ ὑμῶν, οἳ ἀναστήσονται μεθʼ ὑμᾶς, καὶ ὁ ἀλλότριος ὃς ἂν ἔλθῃ ἐκ γῆς μακρόθεν, καὶ ὄψονται τὰς πληγὰς τῆς γῆς ἐκείνης καὶ τὰς νόσους αὐτῆς, ἃς ἀπέστειλε Κύριος ἐπʼ αὐτὴν,

Thomsonbrimstone and burnt salt—when through the whole land there shall be no sowing—no natural productions, no verdure on it, a destruction like that of Sodom and Gomorra, Adama and Seboim, which the Lord overthrew with wrath and indignation—
Brentonbrimstone and burning salt, (the whole land shall not be sown, neither shall any green thing spring, nor rise upon it, as Sodom and Gomorrha were overthrown, Adama and Seboim, which the Lord overthrew in his wrath and anger:)—

ThomsonWhen all the nations shall say, Why hath the Lord dealt thus with this land? What hath occasioned this great fierceness of indignation?
Brentonand all the nations shall say, Why has the Lord done thus to this land? what is this great fierceness of anger?
GreekΚαὶ ἐροῦσι πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, διατί ἐποίησε Κύριος οὕτω τῇ γῇ ταύτῃ; τίς ὁ θυμὸς τῆς ὀργῆς ὁ μέγας οὗτος;

ThomsonThen they will say, Because they forsook the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which He made with their fathers, when He brought them out of the land of Egypt, and went and served strange gods, which they did not know, and which He had not arranged for them,
BrentonAnd men shall say, Because they forsook the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, the things which he appointed to their fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt:

Thomsontherefore the Lord was provoked to wrath against this land, to bring upon it all the curses which are written in the book of the law,

Thomsonand the Lord rooted them out from their land, with wrath, and anger, and very great indignation, and cast them out into another land, as at this day.

ThomsonThe things which are secret are for the Lord our God; but the things which are manifest are for us and our children forever, that we may perform all the words of this law.
BrentonThe secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children for ever, to do all the words of this law.
GreekΤὰ κρυπτὰ Κυρίῳ τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν, τὰ δὲ φανερὰ ἡμῖν καὶ τοῖς τέκνοις ἡμῶν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, ποιεῖν πάντα τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ νόμου τούτου.
