ThomsonAND the whole congregation of the children of Israel removed from Aileim and came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Aileim and Sina. And on the fifteenth day of the second month after their coming out of Egypt

ThomsonThe Israelites indeed said to them, Oh that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of flesh meat and ate bread in plenty! For you have brought us to this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

BrentonAnd the children of Israel said to them, Would we had died smitten by the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh-pots, and ate bread to satiety! for ye have brought us out into this wilderness, to slay all this congregation with hunger.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ, ὄφελον ἀπεθάνομεν πληγέντες ὑπὸ Κυρίου ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, ὅταν ἐκαθίσαμεν ἐπὶ τῶν λεβήτων τῶν κρεῶν, καὶ ἠσθίομεν ἄρτους εἰς πλησμονήν· ὅτι ἐξηγάγετε ἡμᾶς εἰς τὴν ἔρημον ταύτην, ἀποκτεῖναι πᾶσαν τὴν συναγωγὴν ταύτην ἐν λιμῷ.

ThomsonWhereupon the Lord said to Moses, Behold I am going to rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go and gather it day by day, that I may try them whether they will walk in My law or not.

BrentonAnd the Lord said to Moses, Behold, I will rain bread upon you out of heaven: and the people shall go forth, and they shall gather their daily portion for the day, that I may try them whether they will walk in my law or not.

ThomsonBut on the sixth day they must be provident in respect to what they bring in. It shall be twice as much as they gather daily.

BrentonAnd it shall come to pass on the sixth day that they shall prepare whatsoever they have brought in, and it shall be double of what they shall have gathered for the day, daily.

Thomsonand in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, by His hearkening to your murmurings against God. As for us, what are we that you should murmur against us?

Brentonand in the morning ye shall see the glory of the Lord, inasmuch as he hears your murmuring against God; and who are we, that ye continue to murmur against us?

ThomsonNow Moses had said: By the Lord’s giving you in the evening flesh to eat and in the morning bread in plenty, because the Lord hath heard your murmurings which you utter against us. But as for us what are we? your murmuring is not against us but against God.

BrentonAnd Moses said, This shall be when the Lord gives you in the evening flesh to eat, and bread in the morning to satiety, because the Lord has heard your murmuring, which ye murmur against us: and what are we? for your murmuring is not against us, but against God.

ThomsonI have heard the murmuring of the Israelites. Speak to them and say, Towards evening you shall eat flesh and in the morning you shall be plentifully supplied with bread. And you shall know that I am the Lord, your God.

BrentonI have heard the murmuring of the children of Israel: speak to them, saying, Towards evening ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be satisfied with bread; and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God.

Thomsonand in the morning while the dew lay around the camp, behold on the face of the wilderness something small like coriander, white like hoarfrost, on the ground!

Brentonin the morning it came to pass as the dew ceased round about the camp, that, behold, on the face of the wilderness was a small thing like white coriander seed, as frost upon the earth.

GreekΚαὶ ἰδοὺ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον τῆς ἐρήμου λεπτὸν ὡσεὶ κόριον λευκὸν, ὡσεὶ πάγος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.

ThomsonAnd when the Israelites saw this they said one to another, What is this? for they did not know what it was. Upon which Moses said to them. This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat.

BrentonAnd when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, What is this? for they knew not what it was; and Moses said to them,

ThomsonThis is what the Lord hath commanded, Gather of it, everyone for his family a gomer a head according to the number of souls, you must everyone gather for those in the tent with you.

BrentonThis is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. This is that which the Lord has appointed: gather of it each man for his family, a homer for each person, according to the number of your souls, gather each of you with his fellow-lodgers.

GreekΤοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμα ὃ συνέταξε Κύριος· συναγάγετε ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ ἕκαστος εἰς τοὺς καθήκοντας γομὸρ, κατὰ κεφαλὴν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν, ἕκαστος σὺν τοῖς συσκηνίοις ὑμῶν συλλέξατε.

GreekἘποίησαν δὲ οὕτως οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ· καὶ συνέλεξαν ὁ τὸ πολὺ καὶ ὁ τὸ ἔλαττον.

Thomsonand when they measured it by the gomer, he who had gathered much had nothing over, and he who had gathered little did not fall short. Everyone had gathered sufficient for the family with him.

BrentonAnd having measured the homer full, he that had gathered much had nothing over, and he that had gathered less had no lack; each gathered according to the need of those who belonged to him.

GreekΚαὶ μετρήσαντες γομὸρ, οὐκ ἐπλεόνασεν ὁ τὸ πόλυ, καὶ ὁ τὸ ἔλαττον οὐκ ἠλαττόνησεν· ἕκαστος εἰς τοὺς καθήκοντας παρʼ ἑαυτῷ συνέλεξαν.

ThomsonThen Moses said to them, Let none leave any of it till the morning.

BrentonAnd Moses said to them, Let no man leave of it till the morning.

GreekΕἶπε δὲ Μωυσῆς πρὸς αὐτοὺς, μηδεὶς καταλειπέτω ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ πρωΐ.

ThomsonNotwithstanding this they hearkened not to Moses, but some left of it till the morning. And it bred worms and gave an offensive smell. On which Moses was angry with them.

BrentonBut they did not hearken to Moses, but some left of it till the morning; and it bred worms and stank: and Moses was irritated with them.

GreekΚαὶ οὐκ εἰσήκουσαν Μωυσῆ, ἀλλὰ κατέλιπόν τινες ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ πρωΐ· καὶ ἐξέζεσε σκώληκας, καὶ ἐπώζεσε· καὶ ἐπικράνθη ἐπʼ αὐτοῖς Μωυσῆς.

ThomsonSo they gathered it every morning, every one a sufficiency for his family.

BrentonAnd they gathered it every morning, each man what he needed, and when the sun waxed hot it melted.

GreekΚαὶ συνέλεξαν αὐτὸ πρωῒ πρωῒ, ἕκαστος τὸ καθῆκον αὐτῷ· ἡνίκα δὲ διεθέρμαινεν ὁ ἥλιος, ἐτήκετο.

ThomsonAnd when the sun grew warm, it melted away.

BrentonAnd it came to pass on the sixth day, they gathered double what was needed, two homers for one man; and all the chiefs of the synagogue went in and reported it to Moses.

ThomsonNow on the sixth day when they were gathering a double quantity, two gomers for everyone, all the heads of the congregation came and told Moses, whereupon he said to them, Is not this what the Lord spoke, Sabbaths are a rest holy to the Lord? As for to-morrow, bake what you choose to bake and boil what you choose to boil and what is left lay up for to-morrow.

BrentonAnd Moses said to them, Is not this the word which the Lord spoke? To-morrow is the sabbath, a holy rest to the Lord: bake that ye will bake, and seethe that ye will seethe, and all that is over leave to be laid by for the morrow.

ThomsonThen Moses said to them, Eat it to-day, for to-day is the Sabbath to the Lord. It will not be found in the field.

BrentonAnd Moses said, Eat that to-day, for to-day is a sabbath to the Lord: it shall not be found in the plain.

GreekΕἶπε δὲ Μωυσῆς, φάγετε σήμερον· ἔστι γὰρ σάββατα αήμερον τῷ Κυρίῳ· οὐχ εὑρεθήσεται ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ.

ThomsonSix days you shall gather but because the Sabbaths are on the seventh day, therefore in it there will be none.

BrentonSix days ye shall gather it, and on the seventh day is a sabbath, for there shall be none on that day.

ThomsonWhereupon the Lord said to Moses, How long will you refuse to hearken to My commandments and My law?

BrentonAnd the Lord said to Moses, How long are ye unwilling to hearken to my commands and my law?

GreekΕἶπε δὲ Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν, ἕως τίνος οὐ βούλεσθε εἰσακούειν τὰς ἐντολάς μου, καὶ τὸν νόμον μου;

ThomsonYou see that because the Lord gave you this day for sabbaths, therefore on the sixth day He gave you the bread of two days. Abide ye everyone at home. Let none go out from his place on the seventh day.

BrentonSee, for the Lord has given you this day as the sabbath, therefore he has given you on the sixth day the bread of two days: ye shall sit each of you in your houses; let no one go forth from his place on the seventh day.

ThomsonSo the people rested on the seventh day.

BrentonAnd the people kept sabbath on the seventh day.

GreekΚαὶ ἐσαββάτισεν ὁ λαὸς τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ.

ThomsonNow the Israelites called its name Manna. It was like coriander seed. It was white; and its taste was like a cake made with honey.

BrentonAnd the children of Israel called the name of it Man; and it was as white coriander seed, and the taste of it as a wafer with honey.

GreekΚαὶ ἐπωνόμασαν αὐτὸ οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, Μάν· ἦν δὲ ὡσεὶ σπέρμα κορίου λευκόν· τὸ δὲ γεῦμα αὐτοῦ ὡς ἐγκρὶς ἐν μέλιτι.

ThomsonAnd Moses said, This is what the Lord hath commanded, Fill the gomer with Manna to be laid up for your posterity, that they may see the bread which you ate in the wilderness, when the Lord brought you out of the land of Egypt.

BrentonAnd Moses said, This is the thing which the Lord hath commanded, Fill an homer with manna, to be laid up for your generations; that they may see the bread which ye ate in the wilderness, when the Lord led you forth out of the land of Egypt.

ThomsonThen Moses said to Aaron, Take a golden urn and put therein the full of a gomer of Manna; and thou shalt lay it up before God to be kept for your posterity.

BrentonAnd Moses said to Aaron, Take a golden pot, and cast into it one full homer of manna; and thou shalt lay it up before God, to be kept for your generations,

Greekὃν τρόπον συνέταξε Κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ· καὶ ἀπέθηκεν Ἀαρὼν ἐναντίον τοῦ μαρτυρίου εἰς διατήρησιν.

ThomsonAnd the children of Israel ate this Manna forty years till they came to the inhabited land. They ate it till they came to the border of Phoenicia. Now the gomer is one tenth of the trimeter.

BrentonAnd the children of Israel ate manna forty years, until they came to the land they ate the manna, until they came to the region of Phœnicia.
