ThomsonTHUS saith the Lord, Send away My people that they may serve Me.

BrentonAnd the Lord said to Moses, Say to Aaron thy brother, Stretch forth with the hand thy rod over the rivers, and over the canals, and over the pools, and bring up the frogs.

GreekΕἶπε δὲ Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν, εἶπον Ἀαρὼν τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου, ἔκτεινον τῇ χειρὶ τὴν ῥάβδον σου ἐπὶ τοὺς ποταμοὺς, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰς διώρυγας, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ ἕλη, καὶ ἀνάγαγε τοὺς βατράχους.

ThomsonBut if thou wilt not let them go, behold I will smite all thy borders with frogs and the river shall swarm with frogs.

BrentonAnd Aaron stretched forth his hand over the waters of Egypt, and brought up the frogs: and the frog was brought up, and covered the land of Egypt.

GreekΚαὶ ἐξέτεινεν Ἀαρὼν τὴν χεῖρα ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ἀνήγαγε τοὺς βατράχους· καὶ ἀνεβιβάσθη ὁ βάτραχος, καὶ ἐκάλυψε τὴν γῆν Αἰγύπτου.

ThomsonAnd they shall go up and come into thy houses and into thy bedchambers, even upon thy beds; and into the houses of thy servants and thy people and into thy kneading troughs and thy ovens.

BrentonAnd the charmers of the Egyptians also did likewise with their sorceries, and brought up the frogs on the land of Egypt.

GreekἘποίησαν δὲ ὡσαύτως καὶ οἱ ἐπαοιδοὶ τῶν Αἰγυπτίων ταῖς φαρμακίαις αὐτῶν, καὶ ἀνήγαγον τοὺς βατράχους ἐπὶ γῆν Αἰγύπτου.

ThomsonBoth against thee and against thy attendants and thy people shall the frogs come up.

BrentonAnd Pharao called Moses and Aaron, and said, Pray for me to the Lord, and let him take away the frogs from me and from my people; and I will send them away, and they shall sacrifice to the Lord.

GreekΚαὶ ἐκάλεσε Φαραὼ Μωυσῆν καὶ Ἀαρὼν, καὶ εἶπεν, εὔξασθε περὶ ἐμοῦ πρὸς Κύριον, καὶ περιελέτω τοὺς βατράχους ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ, καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἐμοῦ λαοῦ· καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ αὐτοὺς, καὶ θύσωσι τῷ Κυρίῳ.

ThomsonAnd the Lord said to Moses, Say to Aaron thy brother, Stretch forth the staff with thy hand over the rivers and over the canals and over the lakes and bring up the frogs.

BrentonAnd Moses said to Pharao, Appoint me a time when I shall pray for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people, to cause the frogs to disappear from thee, and from thy people, and from your houses, only in the river shall they be left behind.

GreekΕἶπε δὲ Μωυσῆς πρὸς Φαραὼ, τάξαι πρὸς με πότε εὔξομαι περὶ σοῦ, καὶ περὶ τῶν θεραπόντων σου, καὶ τοῦ λαοῦ σου, ἀφανίσαι τοὺς βατράχους ἀπὸ σοῦ, καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ λαοῦ σου, καὶ ἐκ τῶν οἰκιῶν ὑμῶν, πλὴν ἐν τῷ ποταμῷ ὑπολειφθήσονται.

ThomsonSo Aaron stretched forth his hand over the waters of Egypt and brought up the frogs. And frogs came up in abundance and covered the land of Egypt.

BrentonAnd he said, On the morrow: he said therefore, As thou hast said; that thou mayest know, that there is no other God but the Lord.

GreekὉ δὲ εἶπεν, εἰς αὔριον· εἶπεν οὖν, ὡς εἴρηκας· ἵνα εἰδῇς ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἄλλος πλὴν Κυρίου·

ThomsonThough the Egyptian sorcerers did in like manner by their enchantments and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt,

BrentonAnd the frogs shall be removed away from thee, and from your houses and from the villages, and from thy servants, and from thy people, only in the river they shall be left.

GreekΚαὶ περιαιρεθήσονται οἱ βάτραχοι ἀπὸ σοῦ, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν οἰκιῶν ὑμῶν, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἐπαύλεων, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν θεραπόντων σου, καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ λαοῦ σου, πλὴν ἐν τῷ ποταμῷ ὑπολειφθήσονται.

Thomsonyet Pharao called Moses and Aaron and said, Pray for me to the Lord, and let Him take away the frogs from me and my people; and I will let them go that they may sacrifice to the Lord.

BrentonAnd Moses and Aaron went forth from Pharao, and Moses cried to the Lord concerning the restriction of the frogs, as Pharao appointed him.

GreekἘξῆλθε δὲ Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἀαρὼν ἀπὸ Φαραώ· καὶ ἐβόησε Μωυσῆς πρὸς Κύριον περὶ τοῦ ὁρισμοῦ τῶν βατράχων, ὡς ἐτάξατο Φαραώ.

ThomsonWhereupon Moses said to Pharao, Set me the time when I shall pray for thee and for thy attendants and thy people, that the frogs may vanish from thee and from thy people and out of your houses and be left only in the river.

BrentonAnd the Lord did as Moses said, and the frogs died out of the houses, and out of the villages, and out of the fields.

GreekἘποιήσε δὲ Κύριος καθάπερ εἶπε Μωυσῆς· καὶ ἐτελεύτησαν οἱ βάτραχοι ἐκ τῶν οἰκιῶν, καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἐπαύλεων, καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἀγρῶν.

ThomsonAnd he said against tomorrow. And Moses said, It shall be as thou hast spoken. That thou mayst know that there is no other besides the Lord;

BrentonAnd they gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank.

GreekΚαὶ συνήγαγον αὐτοὺς, θημωνίας θημωνίας· καὶ ὤζεσεν ἡ γῆ.

Thomsonthe frogs shall be removed from thee and from your houses and from your villages and from all thy attendants and from thy people; but in the river they shall be left.

BrentonAnd when Pharao saw that there was relief, his heart was hardened, and he did not hearken to them, as the Lord spoke.

GreekἸδὼν δὲ Φαραὼ ὅτι γέγονεν ἀνάψυξις, ἐβαρύνθη ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐκ εἰσήκουσεν αὐτῶν, καθάπερ ἐλάλησε Κύριος.

ThomsonThen Moses and Aaron went out from Pharao; and Moses cried to the Lord for the performance of the promise touching the frogs as Pharao had stated.

BrentonAnd the Lord said to Moses, Say to Aaron, Stretch forth thy rod with thy hand and smite the dust of the earth; and there shall be lice both upon man, and upon quadrupeds, and in all the land of Egypt.

GreekΕἶπε δὲ Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν, εἶπον Ἀαρὼν, ἔκτεινον τῇ χειρὶ τὴν ῥάβδον σου, καὶ πάταξον τὸ χῶμα τῆς γῆς· καὶ ἔσονται σκνίφες ἔν τε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις, καὶ ἐν τοῖς τετράποσι, καὶ ἐν πάσῃ γῇ Αἰγύπτου.

ThomsonAnd the Lord did as Moses said. The frogs died out of the houses and out of the villages and out of the fields.

BrentonSo Aaron stretched out his rod with his hand, and smote the dust of the earth; and the lice were on men and on quadrupeds, and in all the dust of the earth there were lice.

GreekἘξέτεινεν οὖν Ἀαρὼν τῇ χειρὶ τὴν ῥάβδον, καὶ ἐπάταξε τὸ χῶμα τῆς γῆς· καὶ ἐγένοντο οἱ σκνίφες ἐν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις, ἔν τε τοῖς τετράποσι, καὶ ἐν παντὶ χώματι τῆς γῆς ἐγένοντο οἱ σκνίφες.

ThomsonAnd they collected them in heaps and the land stank.

BrentonAnd the charmers also did so with their sorceries, to bring forth the louse, and they could not. And the lice were both on the men and on the quadrupeds.

GreekἘποίησαν δὲ ὡσαύτως καὶ οἱ ἐπαοιδοὶ ταῖς φαρμακίαις αὐτῶν, ἐξαγαγεῖν τὸν σκνῖφα, καὶ οὐκ ἠδύναντο· καὶ ἐγένοντο οἱ σκνίφες ἔν τε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις, καὶ ἐν τοῖς τετράποσιν.

ThomsonBut when Pharao saw that there was a respite, his heart became stubborn and he hearkened not to them as the Lord had said.

BrentonSo the charmers said to Pharao, This is the finger of God. But the heart of Pharao was hardened, and he hearkened not to them, as the Lord said.

GreekΕἶπαν οὖν οἱ ἐπαοιδοὶ τῷ Φαραῷ, δάκτυλος Θεοῦ ἐστι τοῦτο· καὶ ἐσκληρύνθη ἡ καρδία Φαραὼ, καὶ οὐκ εἰσήκουσεν αὐτῶν, καθάπερ ἐλάλησε Κύριος.

ThomsonThen the Lord said to Moses, Say to Aaron, Stretch forth thy staff with thy hand and smite the dust of the ground, and there shall be stinging gnats among the men and the four-footed beasts throughout all the land of Egypt.

BrentonAnd the Lord said to Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharao: and, behold, he will go forth to the water, and thou shalt say to him, These things says the Lord: Send away my people, that they may serve me in the wilderness.

GreekΕἶπε δὲ Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν, ὄρθρισον τὸ πρωΐ, καὶ στῆθι ἐναντίον Φαραώ· καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς ἐξελεύσεται ἐπὶ τὸ ὕδωρ· καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτὸν, τάδε λέγει Κύριος, ἐξαπόστειλον τὸν λαόν μου, ἵνα μοι λατρεύσωσιν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ.

ThomsonAccordingly, Aaron stretched forth the staff with his hand and smote the dust of the ground, and there were stinging gnats among the men and among the four-footed beasts, and in all the dust of the ground there were gnats.

BrentonAnd if thou wilt not let my people go, behold, I send upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and upon your houses, the dog-fly; and the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with the dog-fly, even throughout the land upon which they are.

GreekἘὰν δὲ μὴ βούλει ἐξαποστεῖλαι τὸν λαόν μου, ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐξαποστέλλω ἐπὶ σὲ, καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς θεράποντάς σου, καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν λαόν σου, καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς οἴκους ὑμῶν, κυνόμυιαν· καὶ πλησθήσονται αἱ οἰκίαι τῶν Αἰγυπτίων τῆς κυνομυίης, καὶ εἰς τὴν γῆν ἐφʼ ἧς εἰσιν ἐπʼ αὐτῆς.

ThomsonAs the magicians did in like manner by their enchantments to remove the stinging gnats but could not, so the stinging gnats were among the men and among the four-footed beasts.

BrentonAnd I will distinguish marvellously in that day the land of Gesem, on which my people dwell, in which the dog-fly shall not be: that thou mayest know that I am the Lord the God of all the earth.

GreekΚαὶ παραδοξάσω ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ τὴν γῆν Γεσὲμ, ἐφʼ ἧς ὁ λαός μου ἔπεστιν ἐπʼ αὐτῆς, ἐφʼ ἧς οὐκ ἔσται ἐκεῖ ἡ κυνόμυια· ἵνα εἰδῇς ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς πάσης τῆς γῆς.

ThomsonTherefore the sorcerers said to Pharao, This is the finger of God. But Pharao’s heart was inflexible and he hearkened not to them as the Lord had said.

BrentonAnd I will put a difference between my people and thy people, and on the morrow shall this be on the land. And the Lord did thus.

GreekΚαὶ δώσω διαστολὴν ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ ἐμοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σου λαοῦ· ἐν δὲ τῇ αὔριον ἔσται τοῦτο ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.

ThomsonThen the Lord said to Moses, Rise early to-morrow and stand before Pharao. Lo! he will come forth to the water, and thou shalt say to him, Thus saith the Lord, Send away My people that they may serve Me in the wilderness.

BrentonAnd the dog-fly came in abundance into the houses of Pharao, and into the houses of his servants, and into all the land of Egypt; and the land was destroyed by the dog-fly.

GreekἘποίησε δὲ Κύριος οὕτως· καὶ παρεγένετο ἡ κυνόμυια πλῆθος εἰς τοὺς οἴκους Φαραὼ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς οἴκους τῶν θεραπόντων αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν Αἰγύπτου· καὶ ἐξωλοθρεύθη ἡ γῆ ἀπὸ τῆς κυνομυίης.

ThomsonBut if thou wilt not send away My people behold I will send against thee and against thy attendants and against thy people and against your houses, the dog-fly. And the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with dog-flies throughout all the land in which they are.

BrentonAnd Pharao called Moses and Aaron, saying, Go and sacrifice to the Lord your God in the land.

GreekἘκάλεσε δὲ Φαραὼ Μωυσῆν καὶ Ἀαρὼν, λέγων, ἐλθόντες θύσατε Κυρίῳ τῷ Θεῷ ὑμῶν ἐν τῇ γῇ.

ThomsonBut in that day I will distinguish in a glorious manner the land of Gesem in which My people are. In it there shall be no dog-flies, that thou mayst know that I am the Lord the God of the whole earth.

BrentonAnd Moses said, It cannot be so, for we shall sacrifice to the Lord our God the abominations of the Egyptians; for if we sacrifice the abominations of the Egyptians before them, we shall be stoned.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς, οὐ δυνατὸν γενέσθαι οὕτως· τὰ γὰρ βδελύγματα τῶν Αἰγυπτίων θύσομεν Κυρίῳ τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν· ἐὰν γὰρ θύσωμεν τὰ βδελύγματα τῶν Αἰγυπτίων ἐναντίον αὐτῶν, λιθοβοληθησόμεθα.

ThomsonAnd I will make a difference between My people and thy people. Tomorrow this shall be in the land.

BrentonWe will go a journey of three days into the wilderness, and we will sacrifice to the Lord our God, as the Lord said to us.

GreekὉδὸν τριῶν ἡμερῶν πορευσόμεθα εἰς τὴν ἔρημον· καὶ θύσομεν τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν, καθάπερ εἶπεν Κύριος ἡμῖν.

ThomsonAnd the Lord did so. And there came a swarm of dog-flies into the houses of Pharao and into the houses of his attendants and into all the land of Egypt: and the land was utterly wasted by them.

BrentonAnd Pharao said, I will let you go, and do ye sacrifice to your God in the wilderness, but do not go very far away: pray then for me to the Lord.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Φαραὼ, ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω ὑμᾶς, καὶ θύσατε τῷ Θεῷ ὑμῶν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· ἀλλʼ οὐ μακρὰν ἀποτενεῖτε πορευθῆναι· εὔξασθε οὖν περὶ ἐμοῦ πρὸς Κύριον.

ThomsonWhereupon Pharao sent for Moses and Aaron and said, Go and sacrifice to the Lord your God in this land.

BrentonAnd Moses said, I then will go forth from thee and pray to God, and the dog-fly shall depart both from thy servants, and from thy people to-morrow. Do not thou, Pharao, deceive again, so as not to send the people away to do sacrifice to the Lord.

GreekΕἶπε δὲ Μωυσῆς, ὁ δὲ ἐγὼ ἐξελεύσομαι ἀπὸ σοῦ, καὶ εὔξομαι πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν, καὶ ἀπελεύσεται ἡ κυνόμυια καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν θεραπόντων σου, καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ λαοῦ σου αὔριον· μὴ προσθῇς ἔτι Φαραὼ ἐξαπατῆσαι, τοῦ μὴ ἐξαποστεῖλαι τὸν λαὸν θῦσαι Κυρίῳ.

ThomsonAnd Moses said, It is not possible to do so. For we shall sacrifice to the Lord our God the abominations of the Egyptians. Now if we should sacrifice the abominations of the Egyptians before their faces we shall be stoned.

BrentonAnd Moses went out from Pharao, and prayed to God.

GreekἘξῆλθε δὲ Μωυσῆς ἀπὸ Φαραὼ, καὶ ηὔξατο πρὸς τὸν Θεόν.

ThomsonWe will go three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to our God, as the Lord hath commanded us.

BrentonAnd the Lord did as Moses said, and removed the dog-fly from Pharao, and from his servants, and from his people, and there was not one left.

GreekἘποίησε δὲ Κύριος καθάπερ εἶπε Μωυσῆς· καὶ περιεῖλε τὴν κυνόμυιαν ἀπὸ Φαραὼ, καὶ τῶν θεραπόντων αὐτοῦ, καὶ τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐ κατελείφθη οὐδεμία.

ThomsonThen Pharao said, I give you leave to go, that you may sacrifice to your God in the wilderness; but you must not extend your journey to a great distance. Therefore pray to the Lord for me.

BrentonAnd Pharao hardened his heart, even on this occasion, and he would not send the people away.

GreekΚαὶ ἐβάρυνε Φαραὼ τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ καιροῦ τούτου, καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησεν ἐξαποστεῖλαι τὸν λαόν.
