ThomsonAGAIN a word of the Lord came to me saying,
BrentonAnd the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

ThomsonSon of man prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord: Alas! alas! the day;

Thomsonfor the day of the Lord is near. A cloudy day! it shall be the end of nations.
BrentonFor the day of the Lord is nigh, a day of cloud; it shall be the end of the nations.

ThomsonA sword shall come upon the Egyptians; and there shall be consternation in the land of Ethiopia; and the wounded shall fall in Egypt, and its foundations shall be shaken.
BrentonAnd a sword shall come upon the Egyptians, and there shall be tumult in Ethiopia, and in Egypt men shall fall down slain together, and her foundations shall fall.
GreekΚαὶ ἥξει μάχαιρα ἐπʼ Αἰγυπτίους, καὶ ἔσται ταραχὴ ἐν γῇ Αἰθιοπίᾳ, καὶ συμπεσοῦνται τετραυματισμένοι ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ, καὶ συμπεσεῖται τὰ θεμέλια αὐτῆς.

ThomsonPersians and Cretans and Lydians and Libyans and all the mixed people, and some of the children of My covenant shall fall in it by the sword.
BrentonPersians, and Cretans, and Lydians, and Libyans, and all the mixed multitude, and they of the children of my covenant, shall fall by the sword therein.
GreekΠέρσαι, καὶ Κρῆτες, καὶ Λυδοὶ, καὶ Λίβυες, καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐπίμικτοι καὶ τῶν υἱῶν τῆς διαθήκης μου, μαχαίρᾳ πεσοῦνται ἐν αὐτῇ.

ThomsonThe fortresses of Egypt shall fall, and down shall come the pride of her strength, from Magdolus even to Syene—by the sword they shall fall in it, saith the Lord.
BrentonAnd the supports of Egypt shall fall; and the pride of her strength shall come down from Magdol to Syene: they shall fall by the sword in it, saith the Lord.
GreekΚαὶ πεσοῦνται τὰ ἀντιστηρίγματα Αἰγύπτου, καὶ καταβήσεται ἡ ὕβρις τῆς ἰσχύος αὐτῆς ἀπὸ Μαγδωλοῦ ἕως Συήνης, μαχαίρᾳ πεσοῦνται ἐν αὐτῇ, λέγει Κύριος.

ThomsonAnd it shall be desolate in the midst of desolated countries; and their cities shall be in the midst of desolated cities.

GreekΚαὶ ἐρημωθήσεται ἐν μέσῳ χωρῶν ἐρημωμένων, καὶ αἱ πόλεις αὐτῶν ἐν μέσῳ πόλεων ἠρημωμένων ἔσονται,

ThomsonAnd they shall know that I am the Lord when I send a fire against Egypt, and all her helpers are trodden down.
Brentonand they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall send fire upon Egypt, and when all that help her shall be broken.
Greekκαὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος, ὅταν δῶ πῦρ ἐπʼ Αἴγυπτον, καὶ συντριβῶσι πάντες οἱ βοηθοῦντες αὐτῇ.

ThomsonIn that day swift messengers will go forth to cause Ethiopia to vanish: and there shall be consternation among them in the day of Egypt. For behold it is come.
BrentonIn that day shall messengers go forth hasting to destroy Ethiopia utterly, and there shall be tumult among them in the day of Egypt: for, behold, it comes.
GreekἘν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἐξελεύσονται ἄγγελοι σπεύδοντες ἀφανίσαι τὴν Αἰθιοπίαν, καὶ ἔσται ταραχὴ ἐν αὐτοῖς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ Αἰγύπτου, ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἥκει.

Thomsonof him and his people. They are ravagers sent from nations to destroy a land; and they shall all unsheath their swords against Egypt; and the land shall be filled with the slain.

ThomsonAnd I will dry up their rivers and destroy the land, and the fulness thereof by the hands of strangers, I the Lord have spoken.

ThomsonFor thus saith the Lord God: When I have destroyed the nobles from Memphis, and the chiefs of Memphis out of the land of Egypt, and they shall be no more;

Thomsonand I will send a fire against Egypt, and Syene shall be confounded; and at Diospolis there shall be a breach; and water shall gush out.
BrentonAnd I will send fire upon Egypt; and Syene shall be sorely troubled; and there shall be a breaking in Diospolis, and waters shall be poured out.

Thomsonand the women shall go into captivity. And at Taphnis the day will be darkened, when I there break the sceptres of Egypt, for the pride of her strength shall be destroyed there: and a cloud shall cover her; and her daughters shall be carried away captives.
BrentonAnd the day shall be darkened in Taphnæ, when I have broken there the sceptres of Egypt: and the pride of her strength shall perish there: and a cloud shall cover her, and her daughters shall be taken prisoners.

ThomsonSon of man, I bruised the arms of Pharao king of Egypt; and behold, he hath made no supplication for a cure to be given, for a poultice to be applied, for strength to be given to handle a sword.
BrentonSon of man, I have broken the arms of Pharao, king of Egypt; and, behold, it has not been bound up to be healed, to have a plaster put upon it, or to be strengthened to lay hold of the sword.

ThomsonTherefore thus saith the Lord God: Behold I am against Pharao king of Egypt; and I will break his strong and extended arms, and cause the sword to drop from his hand.
BrentonTherefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against Pharao king of Egypt, and I will break his strong and outstretched arms, and will smite down his sword out of his hand.

ThomsonAnd I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and put My sword into his hand, and he shall wield it against Egypt, and make a prey of his prey, and a spoil of his spoil.
BrentonAnd I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and put my sword into his hand: and he shall bring it upon Egypt, and shall take her plunder and seize her spoils.

ThomsonI will indeed strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon; and the arms of Pharao shall be enfeebled; and they shall know that I am the Lord. When I put My sword into the hand of the king of Babylon, he shall wield it against the land of Egypt.
BrentonYea, I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and the arms of Pharao shall fail: and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have put my sword into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he shall stretch it out over the land of Egypt.
