BrentonSon of man, say to Pharao king of Egypt, and to his multitude; To whom hast thou compared thyself in thy haughtiness?

ThomsonLo, to Assur! he was a cypress on Lebanon, beautiful with branches and lofty in stature. His top was among the clouds.
BrentonBehold, the Assyrian was a cypress in Libanus, and was fair in shoots, and high in stature: his top reached to the midst of the clouds.
GreekἸδοὺ Ἀσσοὺρ κυπάρισσος ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ, καὶ καλὸς ταῖς παραφυάσι, καὶ ὑψηλὸς τῷ μεγέθει, εἰς μέσον νεφελῶν ἐγένετο ἡ ἀρχὴ αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonWater nourished him. The deep made him lofty. It brought its streams about his roots, and sent forth its rills to all the trees of the plain.
BrentonThe water nourished him, the depth made him grow tall; she led her rivers round about his plants, and she sent forth her streams to all the trees of the field.
Greekὕδωρ ἐξέθρεψεν αὐτὸν, ἡ ἄβυσσος ὕψωσεν αὐτὸν, τοὺς ποταμοὺς αὐτῆς ἤγαγε κύκλῳ τῶν φυτῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὰ συστήματα αὐτῆς ἐξαπέστειλεν εἰς πάντα τὰ ξύλα τοῦ πεδίου.

ThomsonBy reason of this he was exalted in greatness above all the trees of the plain, and by the plentiful supply of water his branches spread.
BrentonTherefore was his stature exalted above all the trees of the field, and his branches spread far by the help of much water.
GreekἝνεκεν τούτου ὑψώθη τὸ μέγεθος αὐτοῦ παρὰ πάντα τὰ ξύλα τοῦ πεδίου, καὶ ἐπλατύνθησαν οἱ κλάδοι αὐτοῦ ἀφʼ ὕδατος πολλοῦ.

ThomsonAmong his boughs all the birds of the air built their nests; and under his branches all the beasts of the field brought forth their young; and all the multitude of nations dwelt in its shade.
BrentonAll the birds of the sky made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches all the wild beasts of the field bred; the whole multitude of nations dwelt under his shadow.

ThomsonHe was beautiful in his height by the multitude of his branches, because his roots shot out into abundance of water.
BrentonAnd he was fair in his height by reason of the multitude of his branches: for his roots were amidst much water.
GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο καλὸς ἐν τῷ ὕψει αὐτοῦ διὰ τὸ πλῆθος τῶν κλάδων αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐγενήθησαν αἱ ῥίζαι αὐτοῦ εἰς ὕδωρ πολύ.

ThomsonEven the cypresses such as were in the paradise of God and the pines were not to be compared with his shoots, nor were the fir trees comparable to his branches. Not a tree in the garden of God was equal to him in beauty,
BrentonAnd such cypresses as this were in the paradise of God; and there were no pines like his shoots, and there were no firs like his branches: no tree in the paradise of God was like him in his beauty,
GreekΚαὶ κυπάρισσοι τοιαῦται ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ αἱ πίτυες οὐχ ὅμοιαι ταῖς παραφυάσιν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐλάται οὐκ ἐγένοντο ὅμοιαι τοῖς κλάδοις αὐτοῦ· πᾶν ξύλον ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐχ ὡμοιώθη αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ κάλλει αὐτοῦ,

Thomsonon the account of the multitude of his branches; therefore, the trees of God’s delicious paradise envied him on that account.
Brentonbecause of the multitude of his branches: and the trees of God's paradise of delight envied him.
Greekδιὰ τὸ πλῆθος τῶν κλάδων αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐζήλωσεν αὐτὸν τὰ ξύλα τοῦ παραδείσου τῆς τρυφῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ.

ThomsonBut thus saith the Lord, Because thou wast of great magnitude, therefore thou hast shot up thy top among the clouds. Now when I saw that he was lifted up,
BrentonTherefore thus saith the Lord; Because thou art grown great, and hast set thy top in the midst of the clouds, and I saw when he was exalted;
GreekΔιατοῦτο τάδε λέγει Κύριος, ἀνθʼ ὧν ἐγένου μέγας τῷ μεγέθει, καὶ ἔδωκας τὴν ἀρχήν σου εἰς μέσον νεφελῶν, καὶ εἶδον ἐν τῷ ὑψωθῆναι αὐτόν·

ThomsonI delivered him into the hands of the chief of nations, who accomplished his destruction.
Brentontherefore I delivered him into the hands of the prince of the nations, and he wrought his destruction.
GreekΚαὶ παρέδωκα αὐτὸν εἰς χεῖρας ἄρχοντος ἐθνῶν, καὶ ἐποίησε τὴν ἀπώλειαν αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonStrangers, merciless ravagers from nations, destroyed him. They felled him on the mountains and his branches fell in all the valleys, and his shoots were trampled down in every field of the earth; and all the tribes of the nations came down from their shade, and levelled him to the ground.
BrentonAnd ravaging strangers from the nations have destroyed him, and have cast him down upon the mountains: his branches fell in all the valleys, and his boughs were broken in every field of the land; and all the people of the nations are gone down from their shelter, and have laid him low.

ThomsonUpon his ruins all the birds of the air rested themselves; and all the wild beasts of the earth came against his shoots; that none of the trees by the water might be exalted by their greatness: though they had shot up their top among the clouds,
BrentonAll the birds of the sky have settled on his fallen trunk, and all the wild beasts of the field came upon his boughs:

Thomsonyet none of these water-drinkers stood in their height before them; they were all delivered up to death, to the depth of the earth, among the children of men, to them who go down to the pit.
Brentonin order that none of the trees by the water should exalt themselves by reason of their size: whereas they set their top in the midst of the clouds, yet they continued not in their high state in their place, all that drank water, all were consigned to death, to the depth of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.

ThomsonThus saith the Lord. On the day he went down to Hades, the abyss mourned for him. I stayed its streams and restrained the abundance of water. For him Lebanon covered itself with darkness; all the trees of the field were grieved for him.
BrentonThus saith the Lord God; In the day wherein he went down to Hades, the deep mourned for him: and I stayed her floods, and restrained her abundance of water: and Libanus saddened for him, all the trees of the field fainted for him.

ThomsonAt the sound of his fall the nations were shaken. When he was pressed down to the mansion of the dead, with them who go down into the pit; all the trees of the garden comforted him in the earth—even the choice trees of Lebanon, all that drink water;
BrentonAt the sound of his fall the nations quaked, when I brought him down to Hades with them that go down to the pit: and all the trees of Delight comforted him in the heart, and the choice plants of Libanus, all that drink water.
GreekἈπὸ τῆς φωνῆς τῆς πτώσεως αὐτοῦ ἐσείσθησαν τὰ ἔθνη, ὅτε κατεβίβαζον αὐτὸν εἰς ᾅδου μετὰ τῶν καταβαινόντων εἰς λάκκον, καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἐν γῇ πάντα τὰ ξύλα τῆς τρυφῆς, καὶ τὰ ἐκλεκτὰ τοῦ Λιβάνου πάντα τὰ πίνοντα ὕδωρ.

Thomsonfor they also went down with him to the mansion of the dead, among them who were victims of the sword; and his seed—they who dwelt under his shade were in the middle of their life destroyed.
BrentonFor they went down to hell with him among the slain with the sword; and his seed, even they that dwelt under his shadow, perished in the midst of their life.
GreekΚαὶ γὰρ αὐτοὶ κατέβησαν μετʼ αὐτοῦ εἰς ᾅδου ἐν τοῖς τραυματίαις ἀπὸ μαχαίρας, καὶ τὸ σπέρμα αὐτοῦ οἱ κατοικοῦντες ὑπὸ τὴν σκέπην αὐτοῦ ἐν μέσῳ τῆς ζωῆς αὐτῶν ἀπώλοντο.

ThomsonTo whomsoever thou hast been likened, down with thee, and be pressed low with the trees of pleasure into the depth of the earth. In the midst of the uncircumcised thou shalt lie, with them who are the victims of the swords. Thus shall it be with Pharao and the multitude of his strength, saith the Lord God.
BrentonTo whom art thou compared? descend, and be thou debased with the trees of paradise to the depth of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain by the sword. Thus shall Pharao be, and the multitude of his host, saith the Lord God.
GreekΤίνι ὡμοιώθης; κατάβηθι, καὶ καταβιβάσθητι μετὰ τῶν ξύλων τῆς τρυφῆς εἰς γῆς βάθος· ἐν μέσῳ ἀπεριτμήτων κοιμηθήσῃ μετὰ τραυματιῶν μαχαίρας· οὕτως Φαραὼ καὶ τὸ πλῆθος τῆς ἰσχύος αὐτοῦ, λέγει Κύριος Κύριος.
