ThomsonAGAIN a word of the Lord came to me, saying,

ThomsonSon of man speak to the children of thy people and thou shalt say to them, With regard to a land on which I am about to bring a sword, when the people of that land take a man, one of themselves, and make him their watchman;
BrentonSon of man, speak to the children of thy people, and thou shalt say to them, On whatsoever land I shall bring a sword, and the people of the land take one man of them, and set him for their watchman:
Greekυἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, λάλησον τοῖς υἱοῖς τοῦ λαοῦ σου, καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτοὺς, Γῆ ἐφʼ ἣν ἂν ἐπάγω ῥομφαίαν, καὶ λάβῃ ὁ λαὸς τῆς γῆς ἄνθρωπον ἕνα ἐξ αὐτῶν, καὶ δῶσιν αὐτὸν ἑαυτοῖς εἰς σκοπὸν,

Thomsonif he upon seeing the sword coming against the land, sound the trumpet and warn the people;
Brentonand he shall see the sword coming upon the land, and blow the trumpet, and sound an alarm to the people;
Greekκαὶ ἴδῃ τὴν ῥομφαίαν ἐρχομένην ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, καὶ σαλπίσῃ τῇ σάλπιγγι, καὶ σημάνῃ τῷ λαῷ,

Thomsonand he who heareth the trumpet doth not take warning; and the sword cometh and cutteth him off; his blood shall be on his own head.
Brentonand he that hears the sound of the trumpet shall hear indeed, and yet not take heed, and the sword shall come upon him, and overtake him, his blood shall be upon his own head.
Greekκαὶ ἀκούσῃ ὁ ἀκούσας τῆς φωνῆς τῆς σάλπιγγος, καὶ μὴ φυλάξηται, καὶ ἐπέλθῃ ἡ ῥομφαία, καὶ καταλάβῃ αὐτὸν, τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ ἔσται.

ThomsonBecause upon hearing the sound of the trumpet he did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself; for had he taken warning he might have saved his life.
BrentonBecause he heard the sound of the trumpet, and took no heed, his blood shall be upon him: but the other, because he took heed, has delivered his soul.
GreekὍτι τὴν φωνὴν τῆς σάλπιγγος ἀκούσας οὐκ ἐφυλάξατο, τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐπʼ αὐτοῦ ἔσται· καὶ οὗτος ὅτι ἐφυλάξατο, τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐξείλατο.

ThomsonBut if the watchman, upon seeing the sword coming, doth not sound the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword cometh and taketh the life of any of them; that person is taken off because of his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hands.
BrentonBut if the watchman see the sword coming, and do not sound the trumpet, and the people do not watch; and the sword come, and take a soul from among them, that soul is taken because of its iniquity; but the blood thereof will I require at the watchman's hand.
GreekΚαὶ ὁ σκοπὸς ἐὰν ἴδῃ τὴν ῥομφαίαν ἐρχομένην, καὶ μὴ σημάνῃ τῇ σάλπιγγι, καὶ ὁ λαὸς μὴ φυλάξηται, καὶ ἐλθοῦσα ἡ ῥομφαία λάβῃ ἐξ αὐτῶν ψυχὴν, αὕτη διὰ τὴν αὐτῆς ἀνομίαν ἐλήφθη, καὶ τὸ αἷμα ἐκ χειρὸς τοῦ σκοποῦ ἐκζητήσω.

ThomsonNow, as for thee son of man, I have made thee a watchman to the house of Israel, therefore thou shalt hear a word from My mouth.
BrentonAnd thou, son of man, I have set thee as a watchman to the house of Israel, and thou shalt hear a word from my mouth.
GreekΚαὶ σὺ υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, σκοπὸν δέδωκά σε τῷ οἴκῳ Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ ἀκούσῃ ἐκ στόματός μου λόγον.

ThomsonWhen I say to the sinner, Thou shalt die: if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way; that unrighteous man shall die for his iniquity; but his blood I will require at thy hand.
BrentonWhen I say to the sinner, Thou shalt surely die; if thou speak not to warn the wicked from his way, the wicked himself shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
GreekἘν τῷ εἰπεῖν με τῷ ἁμαρτωλῷ, θανάτῳ θανατωθήσῃ, καὶ μὴ λαλήσῃς τοῦ φυλάξασθαι τὸν ἀσεβῆ ἀπὸ τῆς ὁδοῦ αὐτοῦ, αὐτὸς ὁ ἄνομος τῇ ἀνομίᾳ αὐτοῦ ἀποθανεῖται, τὸ δὲ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς χειρός σου ἐκζητήσω.

ThomsonBut if thou forewarn the wicked of his way to turn him from it; and he turn not from it, he shall die for his wickedness and thou hast delivered thy soul.
BrentonBut if thou forewarn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he turn not from his way, he shall die in his ungodliness; but thou hast delivered thine own soul.
GreekΣὺ δὲ ἐὰν προαπαγγείλῃς τῷ ἀσεβεῖ τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ ἀποστρέψαι ἀπʼ αὐτῆς, καὶ μὴ ἀποστρέψῃ ἀπὸ τῆς ὁδοῦ αὐτοῦ, οὗτος τῇ ἀσεβείᾳ αὐτοῦ ἀποθανεῖται, καὶ σὺ τὴν ψυχὴν σαυτοῦ ἐξῄρησαι.

ThomsonNow son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you spoken, saying, Our errors and our iniquities are upon us, and in them we are pining away; how then can we live?
BrentonAnd thou, son of man, say to the house of Israel; Thus have ye spoken, saying, Our errors, and our iniquities weigh upon us, and we pine away in them, and how then shall we live?
GreekΚαὶ σὺ υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, εἰπὸν τῷ οἴκῳ Ἰσραὴλ, οὓτως ἐλαλήσατε λέγοντες, αἱ πλάναι ἡμῶν, καὶ αἱ ἀνομίαι ἡμῶν ἐφʼ ἡμῖν εἰσι, καὶ ἐν αὐταῖς ἡμεῖς τηκόμεθα, καὶ πῶς ζησόμεθα;

ThomsonSay unto them: As I live, saith the Lord, I desire not the death of the wicked, but that the wicked should turn from his way and live. Turn ye, turn ye from your way. Why do you die, O house of Israel.
BrentonSay to them, Thus saith the Lord; As I live, I desire not the death of the ungodly, as that the ungodly should turn from his way and live: turn ye heartily from your way; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
GreekΕἰπὸν αὐτοῖς, ζῶ ἐγὼ, τάδε λέγει Κύριος, οὐ βούλομαι τὸν θάνατον τοῦ ἀσεβοῦς, ὡς ἀποστρέψαι τὸν ἀσεβῆ ἀπὸ τῆς ὁδοῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ζῇν αὐτόν· ἀποστροφῇ ἀποστρέψατε ἀπὸ τῆς ὁδοῦ ὑμῶν· καὶ ἱνατί ἀποθνήσκετε οἶκος Ἰσραήλ;

ThomsonSay to the children of thy people, The righteousness of a righteous man will not save him on the day when he goeth astray. Nor shall the iniquity of a wicked man bring ruin on him, on the day when he turneth away from his iniquity. What! cannot a righteous man be saved?
BrentonSay to the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him, in the day wherein he errs: and the iniquity of the ungodly shall not harm him, in the day wherein he turns from his iniquity, but the righteous erring shall not be able to deliver himself.
GreekΕἰπὸν πρὸς τοὺς υἱοὺς τοῦ λαοῦ σου, δικαιοσύνη δικαίου οὐ μὴ ἐξελεῖται αὐτὸν, ἐν ᾗ ἂν ἡμέρᾳ πλανηθῇ· καὶ ἀνομία ἀσεβοῦς οὐ μὴ κακώσῃ αὐτὸν, ἐν ᾗ ἂν ἡμέρᾳ ἀποστρέψῃ ἀπὸ τῆς ἀνομίας αὐτοῦ· καὶ δίκαιος οὐ μὴ δύνηται σωθῆναι.

ThomsonWhen I have spoken to the righteous, saying, Thou shalt live; if he, trusting to his [past] righteousness, shall commit iniquity, none of his righteous acts shall be remembered; for the iniquity which he hath done, even for it he shall die.
BrentonWhen I say to the righteous, Thou shalt live; and he trusts in his righteousness, and shall commit iniquity, none of his righteousnesses shall be remembered; in his unrighteousness which he has wrought, in it shall he die.

ThomsonAnd when I say to the wicked, Thou shalt die:
BrentonAnd when I say to the ungodly, Thou shalt surely die; and he shall turn from his sin, and do judgment and justice,
GreekΚαὶ ἐν τῷ εἰπεῖν με τῷ ἀσεβεῖ, θανάτῳ θανατωθήσῃ, καὶ ἀποστρέψει ἀπὸ τῆς ἁμαρτίαις αὐτοῦ, καὶ ποιήσει κρίμα καὶ δικαιοσύνην,

Thomsonif he turn from his sin and execute judgment and justice and restore a pledge and make compensation for acts of rapine and walk in the statutes of life without committing injustice, he shall live and not die. None of his sins which he committed shall be remembered.
Brentonand return the pledge, and repay that which he has robbed, and walk in the ordinances of life, so as to do no wrong; he shall surely live, and shall not die.
Greekκαὶ ἐνεχύρασμα ἀποδοῖ, καὶ ἁρπάγματα ἀποτίσει, ἐν προστάγμασιν ζωῆς διαπορεύηται, τοῦ μὴ ποιῆσαι ἄδικον, ζωῇ ζήσεται, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ.

ThomsonBecause he hath executed judgment and justice; for this he shall live.
BrentonNone of his sins which he has committed shall be remembered: because he has wrought judgment and righteousness; by them shall he live.
GreekΠᾶσαι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι αὐτοῦ ἃς ἥμαρτεν, οὐ μὴ ἀναμνησθῶσιν, ὅτι κρίμα καὶ δικαιοσύνην ἐποίησεν, ἐν αὐταῖς ζήσεται.

ThomsonNow will the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not straight? It is their own way which is not straight.
BrentonYet the children of thy people will say, The way of the Lord is not straight: whereas this their way is not straight.
GreekΚαὶ ἐροῦσιν οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ λαοῦ σου, οὐκ εὐθεῖα ἡ ὁδὸς τοῦ Κυρίου· καὶ αὕτη ἡ ὁδὸς αὐτῶν οὐκ εὐθεῖα.

ThomsonWhen a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness and shall commit iniquities, for them he shall die.
BrentonWhen the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and shall commit iniquities, then shall he die in them.
GreekἘν τῷ ἀποστρέψαι δίκαιον ἀπὸ τῆς δικαιοσύνης αὐτοῦ, καὶ ποιήσει ἀνομίας, καὶ ἀποθανεῖται ἐν αὐταῖς.

ThomsonAnd when the sinner turneth away from his iniquity and shall execute judgment and justice, for them he shall live.
BrentonAnd when the sinner turns from his iniquity, and shall do judgment and righteousness, he shall live by them.
GreekΚαὶ ἐν τῷ ἀποστρέψαι τὸν ἁμαρτωλὸν ἀπὸ τῆς ἀνομίας αὐτοῦ, καὶ ποιήσει κρίμα καὶ δικαιοσύνην, ἐν αὐτοῖς αὐτὸς ζήσεται.

ThomsonYet this is what gave occasion to your saying, The way of the Lord is not straight. I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways.
BrentonAnd this is that which ye said, The way of the Lord is not straight. I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one for his ways.
GreekΚαὶ τοῦτό ἐστιν ὃ εἴπατε, οὐκ εὐθεῖα ἡ ὁδὸς Κυρίου· ἕκαστον ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτοῦ κρινῶ ὑμᾶς, οἶκος Ἰσραήλ.

ThomsonNow it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the twelfth month, on the fifth of the month, that one who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, The city is taken.
BrentonAnd it came to pass in the tenth year of our captivity, in the twelfth month, on the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped from Jerusalem came to me, saying, The city is taken.

ThomsonNow the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before he arrived, and had opened my mouth. So when he came to me in the morning my mouth was opened and no more shut.
BrentonNow the hand of the Lord had come upon me in the evening, before he came; and he opened my mouth, when he came to me in the morning: and my mouth was open, it was no longer kept closed.
GreekΚαὶ χεὶρ Κυρίου ἐγενήθη ἐπʼ ἐμὲ ἑσπέρας πρὶν ἐλθεῖν αὐτὸν, καὶ ἤνοιξέ μου τὸ στόμα, ὡς ἦλθε πρὸς μὲ τὸ πρωΐ· καὶ ἀνοιχθὲν τὸ στόμα μου, οὐ συνεσχέθη ἔτι.

ThomsonSon of man, they who dwell in the waste places in the land of Israel say, Abraham was a single person, yet he had this land, now we are many; to us this land is given for a possession.
BrentonSon of man, they that inhabit the desolate places on the land of Israel say, Abraam was one, and he possessed the land: and we are more numerous; to us the land is given for a possession.
Greekυἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὰς ἠρημωμένας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ, λέγουσιν, εἷς ἦν Ἁβραὰμ, καὶ κατέσχε τὴν γῆν, καὶ ἡμεῖς πλείους ἐσμὲν, ἡμῖν δέδοται ἡ γῆ εἰς κατάσχεσιν.

ThomsonTherefore say to them, Thus saith the Lord God: Will ye eat with blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood, and shall ye still inherit the land?

ThomsonAs I live, they who dwell in the wastes shall fall by the sword; and they in the open country shall be delivered to the wild beasts of the field for food; and those in walled towns and those in caves I will destroy with pestilence,
BrentonAs I live, surely they that are in the desolate places shall fall by swords, and they that are in the open plain shall be given for food to the wild beasts of the field, and them that are in the fortified cities and them that are in the caves I will slay with pestilence.
Greekζῶ ἐγὼ, εἰ μὴν οἱ ἐν ταῖς ἠρημωμέναις μαχαίραις πεσοῦνται, καὶ οἱ ἐπὶ προσώπου τοῦ πεδίου τοῖς θηρίοις τοῦ ἀγροῦ δοθήσονται εἰς κατάβρωμα, καὶ τοὺς ἐν ταῖς τετειχισμέναις, καὶ τοὺς ἐν τοῖς σπηλαίοις θανάτῳ ἀποκτενῶ.

Thomsonand I will make the land a desert. And the pride of its strength shall be destroyed, and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate by reason of none passing through it.
BrentonAnd I will make the land desert, and the pride of her strength shall perish; and the mountains of Israel shall be made desolate by reason of no man passing through.
GreekΚαὶ δώσω τὴν γῆν ἔρημον, καὶ ἀπολεῖται ἡ ὕβρις τῆς ἰσχύος αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐρημωθήσεται τὰ ὄρῃ τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ διὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι διαπορευόμενον.

ThomsonAnd they shall know that I am the Lord. For I will make their land a desert and it shall be wasted, because of all their abominations which they have committed.
BrentonAnd they shall know that I am the Lord; and I will make their land desert, and it shall be made desolate because of all their abominations which they have wrought.
GreekΚαὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος· καὶ ποιήσω τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν ἔρημον, καὶ ἐρημωθήσεται διὰ πάντα τὰ βδελύγματα αὐτῶν ἃ ἐποίησαν.

ThomsonNow son of man, with regard to these children of thy people who speak of thee by the walls and in the porches of their houses, they indeed speak to one another, saying, Let us assemble and hear what come from the Lord.
BrentonAnd as for thee, son of man, the children of thy people are they that speak concerning thee by the walls, and in the porches of the houses, and they talk one to another, saying, Let us come together, and let us hear the words that proceed from the Lord.
GreekΚαὶ σὺ υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ λαοῦ σου οἱ λαλοῦντες περὶ σοῦ παρὰ τὰ τείχη καὶ ἐν τοῖς πυλῶσι τῶν οἰκιῶν, καὶ λαλοῦσιν ἄνθρωπος τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ, λέγοντες, συνέλθωμεν, καὶ ἀκούσωμεν τὰ ἐκπορευόμενα παρὰ Κυρίου.

ThomsonThey come to thee as people assemble; and they sit before thee and hear thy words, but will not do them, because there is a lie in their mouth, and their heart goeth after their pollutions;
BrentonThey approach thee as a people comes together, and sit before thee, and hear thy words, but they will not do them: for there is falsehood in their mouth, and their heart goes after their pollutions.
GreekἜρχονται πρὸς σὲ, ὡς συμπορεύεται λαὸς, καὶ κάθηνται ἐναντίον σου, καὶ ἀκούουσι τὰ ῥήματά σου, καὶ αὐτὰ οὐ μὴ ποιήσουσιν, ὅτι ψεῦδος ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν, καὶ ὀπίσω τῶν μιασμάτων ἡ καρδία αὐτῶν.

Thomsontherefore thou art to them like the sound of a tuneful psaltery: they will hear thy words, but will not do them;
BrentonAnd thou art to them as the sound of a sweet, well-tuned psaltery, and they will hear thy words, but they will not do them.
GreekΚαὶ γίνῃ αὐτοῖς ὡς φωνὴ ψαλτηρίου ἡδυφώνου εὐαρμόστου, καὶ ἀκούσονταί σου τὰ ῥήματα, καὶ οὐ μὴ ποιήσουσιν αὐτά.

Thomsonbut when they [thy words] come to pass they will say, Lo! they are come! And they will know that there was a prophet among them.
BrentonBut whenever it shall come to pass, they will say, Behold, it is come: and they shall know that there was a prophet in the midst of them.
GreekΚαὶ ἡνίκα ἐὰν ἔλθῃ, ἐροῦσιν, ἰδοὺ ἥκει· καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι προφήτης ἦν ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν.
