ThomsonSon of man, take up a funeral song for Pharao king of Egypt, and thou shalt say to him, To the lion of nations thou hast been likened, but thou art like a dragon which is in the sea. Thou hast harried thy rivers and troubled the water with thy feet, and trampled thy rivers,
BrentonSon of man, take up a lamentation for Pharao king of Egypt, and say to him, Thou art become like a lion of the nations, and as the serpent that is in the sea: and thou didst make assaults with thy rivers, and didst disturb the water with thy feet, and didst trample thy rivers.

ThomsonTherefore thus saith the Lord: I will spread for thee the nets of many peoples, and drag thee up with My grapple.
BrentonThus saith the Lord; I will also cast over thee the nets of many nations, and will bring thee up with my hook:

ThomsonAnd I will lay thee extended on the land. The plains shall be filled. And I will cause all the birds of the air to settle on thee and glut all the beasts of the earth.
Brentonand I will stretch thee upon the earth: the fields shall be covered with thee, and I will cause all the birds of the sky to settle upon thee, and I will fill with thee all the wild beasts of the earth.

ThomsonI will cast thy flesh on the mountains and fill them with thy blood:

Thomsonand the earth shall be drenched with the torrents from thee. By reason of the abundance of thee on the mountains, I will fill the valleys with parcels of thee.
BrentonAnd the land shall be drenched with thy dung, because of thy multitude upon the mountains: I will fill the valleys with thee.

ThomsonAnd in the act of extinguishing thee I will cover heaven and darken the stars thereof: I will veil the sun with a cloud and the moon shall not give her light;

Thomsonall that give light in the heaven shall be dark over thee, and I will overspread the earth with darkness, saith the Lord God,
BrentonAll the bodies that give light in the sky, shall be darkened over thee, and I will bring darkness upon the earth, saith the Lord God.

Thomsonand vex the heart of many peoples. When I bring thy captivity to the nations-to a land which thou hast not known;
BrentonAnd I will provoke to anger the heart of many people, when I shall lead thee captive among the nations, to a land which thou hast not known.
GreekΚαὶ παροργιῶ καρδίαν λαῶν πολλῶν, ἡνίκα ἂν ἄγω αἰχμαλωσίαν σου εἰς τὰ ἔθνη, εἰς γῆν ἣν οὐκ ἔγνως.

Thomsonthen shall many nations groan for thee; and their kings will be struck with horror when My sword is brandished before their faces, expecting their own ruin from the day of thy downfall.
BrentonAnd many nations shall mourn over thee, and their kings shall be utterly amazed, when my sword flies in their faces, as they wait for their own fall from the day of thy fall.
GreekΚαὶ στυγνάσουσιν ἐπὶ σὲ ἔθνη πολλὰ, καὶ οἱ βασιλεῖς αὐτῶν ἐκστάσει ἐκστήσονται, ἐν τῷ πετᾶσθαι τὴν ῥομφαίαν μου ἐπὶ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν, προσδεχόμενοι τὴν πτῶσιν αὐτῶν ἀφʼ ἡμέρας πτώσεώς σου.

ThomsonWith the swords of giants I will overthrow thy strength. They are all ravagers from the nations; and they shall destroy the haughtiness of Egypt, and all her strength shall be trampled down.
Brentonwith the swords of mighty men; and I will cast down thy strength: they are all destroying ones from the nations, and they shall destroy the pride of Egypt, and all her strength shall be crushed.

ThomsonAnd I will destroy all her cattle from her great water; and the foot of man shall no more trouble it, nor shall a hoof of cattle trample it.

ThomsonWhen I have devoted Egypt to destruction, and the land is wasted with the fulness thereof-when I have scattered all its inhabitants, then they shall know that I am the Lord,
Brentonwhen I shall give up Egypt to destruction, and the land shall be made desolate with the fulness thereof; when I shall scatter all that dwell in it, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

ThomsonIt is a song of woe and thou shalt sing it mournfully, and the daughters of the nations shall bewail Egypt, and over all her strength pour forth this plaint, saith the Lord God.
BrentonThere is a lamentation, and thou shalt utter it; and the daughters of the nations shall utter it, even for Egypt, and they shall mourn for it over all the strength thereof, saith the Lord God.

ThomsonSon of man, sing a song of woe over the strength of Egypt, when the nations shall thrust down her daughters-shall thrust them down dead to the depth of the earth-to them who are going down into the pit;
BrentonSon of man, lament over the strength of Egypt, for the nations shall bring down her daughters dead to the depth of the earth, to them that go down to the pit.

Thomsonin the midst of the sword’s victims they shall fall with him.
BrentonThey shall fall with him in the midst of them that are slain with the sword, and all his strength shall perish: the giants also shall say to thee,
GreekἘν μέσῳ μαχαίρας τραυματιῶν πεσοῦνται μετʼ αὐτοῦ, καὶ κοιμηθήσεται πᾶσα ἡ ἰσχὺς αὐτοῦ·

ThomsonWhen all his power shall be laid to rest, then will the giants say to thee, Down with thee into the lowest pit!
BrentonBe thou in the depth of the pit: to whom art thou superior? yea, go down, and lie with the uncircumcised, in the midst of them that are slain with the sword.

ThomsonThere lieth Assur and all his assembly; all the victims of the sword are laid there, and their sepulture is in the deep pit;

GreekἘκεῖ Ἀσσοὺρ καὶ πᾶσα ἡ συναγωγὴ αὐτοῦ, πάντες τραυματίαι ἐκεῖ ἐδόθησαν, καὶ ἡ ταφὴ αὐτῶν ἐν βάθει βόθρου, καὶ ἐγενήθη ἡ συναγωγὴ αὐτοῦ περικύκλῳ τοῦ μνήματος αὐτοῦ, πάντες οἱ τραυματίαι οἱ πεπτωκότες μαχαίρᾳ,

Thomsonand around his tomb is his assembly-all the slain who fell by the sword, who made themselves dreaded in the land of life.
Brentonand their burial is in the depth of the pit, and his company are set round about his tomb: all the slain that fell by the sword, who had caused the fear of them to be upon the land of the living.

ThomsonThere lieth Ailam [Elam] with all his host around his tomball the slain who fell by the sword, and went down uncircumcised to the depth of the earth:
BrentonThere is Ælam and all his host round about his tomb: all the slain that fell by the sword, and the uncircumcised that go down to the deep of the earth, who caused their fear to be upon the land of the living: and they have received their punishment with them that go down to the pit,

ThomsonThere are deposited Mosoch and Thobel, each with all his host around his tomb-all his slain, all uncircumcised, slain with the sword. Having made themselves dreaded in the land of life
BrentonThere were laid Mosoch, and Thobel, and all his strength round about his tomb: all his slain men, all the uncircumcised, slain with the sword, who caused their fear to be in the land of the living.

Thomsonthey are laid with the giants who fell of old; who went down in their a m o u r to the mansion of the dead, and had their swords placed under their heads; but their iniquities were on their bones, because they were the terror of all during their lives.

ThomsonThou indeed shalt be in the midst of the uncircumcised, with them who are the victims of the sword.
BrentonAnd thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised, with them that have been slain by the sword.
GreekΚαὶ σὺ ἐν μέσῳ ἀπεριτμήτων κοιμηθήσῃ μετὰ τετραυματισμένων μαχαίρᾳ.

ThomsonThere have been laid the princes of Assur; they, who gave its strength to the wounding sword, are themselves laid to rest with the slain-with them who go down into the pit.

ThomsonThere lie the chiefs of the north, all the generals of Assur who, descending wounded, are with their terror and their strength laid to rest, uncircumcised with those slain by the sword; and have borne their punishment with them who go down to the pit.
BrentonThere are the princes of the north, even all the captains of Assur, who go down slain to Hades: they lie uncircumcised among the slain with the sword together with their terror and their strength, and they have received their punishment with them that go down to the pit.

ThomsonThese king Pharao shall see and be comforted for all his host, saith the Lord God.
BrentonKing Pharao shall see them, and shall be comforted over all their force, saith the Lord God.
GreekἘκείνους ὄψεται βασιλεὺς Φαραὼ, καὶ παρακληθήσεται ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῶν, λέγει Κύριος Κύριος.

ThomsonBecause I have spread the terror of him over the land of life; therefore he shalf be in the midst of the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword-even Pharao and all his multitude with him, saith the Lord God.
BrentonFor I have caused his fear to be upon the land of the living: yet he shall lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain with the sword, even Pharao, and all his multitude with him, saith the Lord God.
