ThomsonAGAIN God appeared to him at the Oak grove of Mambre. As he was sitting at the door of his tent at noon,
BrentonAnd God appeared to him by the oak of Mambre, as he sat by the door of his tent at noon.
GreekὬφθη δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Θεὸς πρὸς τῇ δρυῒ τῇ Μαμβρῇ, καθημένου αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς θύρας τῆς σκηνῆς αὐτοῦ μεσημβρίας.

Thomsonhe raised his eyes and looked, and lo! three men stood above him. And when he saw them he ran to meet them from the door of his tent; and having made obeisance to the ground, he said,
BrentonAnd he lifted up his eyes and beheld, and lo! three men stood before him; and having seen them he ran to meet them from the door of his tent, and did obeisance to the ground.
GreekἈναβλέψας δὲ τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ εἶδε, καὶ ἰδοὺ τρεῖς ἄνδρες εἱστήκεισαν ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἰδὼν, προσέδραμεν εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτοῖς ἀπὸ τῆς θύρας τῆς σκηνῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ προσεκύνησεν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.

ThomsonMy Lord, if I have found favour in Thy sight, pass not by Thy servant.
BrentonAnd he said, Lord, if indeed I have found grace in thy sight, pass not by thy servant.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε, Κύριε, εἰ ἄρα εὗρον χάριν ἐναντίον σου, μὴ παρέλθῃς τὸν παῖδά σου.

ThomsonLet water, I pray thee, be brought and let Your feet be washed; and refresh yourselves under this tree;
BrentonLet water now be brought, and let them wash your feet, and do ye refresh yourselves under the tree.
GreekΛηφθήτω δὴ ὕδωρ, καὶ νιψάτωσαν τοὺς πόδας ὑμῶν, καὶ καταψύξατε ὑπὸ τὸ δένδρον.

Thomsonand I will fetch bread that You may eat. And after that you may proceed on your journey, inasmuch as you have turned aside to your servant. Whereupon He said, Do as thou hast said.
BrentonAnd I will bring bread, and ye shall eat, and after this ye shall depart on your journey, on account of which refreshment ye have turned aside to your servant. And he said, So do, as thou hast said.
GreekΚαὶ λήψομαι ἄρτον, καὶ φάγεσθε. Καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο παρελεύσεσθε εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν ὑμῶν, οὗ ἕνεκεν ἐξεκλίνατε πρὸς τὸν παῖδα ὑμῶν. Καὶ εἶπεν, οὕτω ποίησον, καθὼς εἴρηκας.

ThomsonThen Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said to her, Haste, and mix up three measures of fine flour and make cakes on the hearth.
BrentonAnd Abraam hasted to the tent to Sarrha, and said to her, Hasten, and knead three measures of fine flour, and make cakes.
GreekΚαὶ ἔσπευσεν Ἁβραὰμ ἐπὶ τὴν σκηνὴν πρὸς Σάῤῥαν, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ, σπεῦσον, καὶ φύρασον τρία μέτρα σεμιδάλεως, καὶ ποίησον ἐγκρυφίας.

ThomsonThen Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf tender and good and gave it to a servant and urged him to dress it quickly.
BrentonAnd Abraam ran to the kine, and took a young calf, tender and good, and gave it to his servant, and he hasted to dress it.
GreekΚαὶ εἰς τὰς βόας ἔδραμεν Ἁβραὰμ, καὶ ἔλαβεν ἁπαλὸν μοσχάριον καὶ καλὸν, καὶ ἔδωκε τῷ παιδὶ, καὶ ἐτάχυνε τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτό.

ThomsonAnd he took butter and milk and the calf which he had dressed and set it before them, and they ate, and he stood by them under the tree.

ThomsonAnd He said to Abraham, Where is Sarah thy wife? And
BrentonAnd he said to him, Where is Sarrha thy wife? And he answered and said, Behold! in the tent.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν, ποῦ Σάῤῥα ἡ γυνή σου; ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν, ἰδοὺ ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ.

ThomsonAbraham said, Behold! in the tent. Then he said, I will return and come to thee about this time twelve month, and Sarah thy wife will have a son. And Sarah heard, being at the door of the tent behind them.
BrentonAnd he said, I will return and come to thee according to this period seasonably, and Sarrha thy wife shall have a son; and Sarrha heard at the door of the tent, being behind him.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ, ἐπαναστρέφων ἥξω πρὸς σὲ κατὰ τὸν καιρὸν τοῦτον εἰς ὥρας, καὶ ἕξει υἱὸν Σάῤῥα ἡ γυνή σου. Σάῤῥα δὲ ἤκουσε πρὸς τῇ θύρᾳ τῆς σκηνῆς οὖσα ὄπισθεν αὐτοῦ.

Thomson(Now Abraham and Sarah were far advanced in life, and it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.)
BrentonAnd Abraam and Sarrha were old, advanced in days, and the custom of women ceased with Sarrha.
GreekἉβραὰμ δὲ καὶ Σάῤῥα πρεσβύτεροι προβεβηκότες ἡμερῶν· ἐξέλιπε δὲ τῇ Σάῤῥᾳ γίνεσθαι τὰ γυναικεια.

ThomsonAnd Sarah smiled within herself, saying, It hath never been so with me even to this time, and my lord is old.
BrentonAnd Sarrha laughed in herself, saying, The thing has not as yet happened to me, even until now, and my lord is old.
GreekἘγέλασε δὲ Σάῤῥα ἐν ἑαυτῇ λέγουσα, οὔπω μέν μοι γέγονεν ἕως τοῦ νῦν· ὁ δὲ κύριός μου πρεσβύτερος.

ThomsonAnd the Lord said to Abraham, Why did Sarah smile within herself, saying, Shall I indeed bring forth? I who am old?
BrentonAnd the Lord said to Abraam, Why is it that Sarrha has laughed in herself, saying, Shall I then indeed bear? but I am grown old.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς Ἁβραὰμ, τί ὅτι ἐγέλασε Σάῤῥα ἐν ἑαυτῇ, λέγουσα, ἆρά γε ἀληθῶς τέξομαι; ἐγὼ δὲ γεγήρακα.

ThomsonCan anything be impossible with God? About this time twelvemonth I will return to thee, and Sarah shall have a son.
BrentonShall anything be impossible with the Lord? At this time I will return to thee seasonably, and Sarrha shall have a son.
GreekΜὴ ἀδυνατήσει παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ ῥῆμα; εἰς τὸν καιρὸν τοῦτον ἀναστρέψω πρὸς σὲ εἰς ὥρας, καὶ ἔσται τῇ Σάῤῥᾳ υἱός.

ThomsonThen Sarah denied, saying, I did not smile, for she was terrified. And He said to her, Nay, but thou didst smile.
BrentonBut Sarrha denied, saying, I did not laugh, for she was afraid. And he said to her, Nay, but thou didst laugh.
GreekἨρνήσατο δὲ Σάῤῥα, λέγουσα, οὐκ ἐγέλασα· ἐφοβήθη γάρ. Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ, οὐχὶ, ἀλλὰ ἐγέλασας.

ThomsonThen the men arose and directed their course towards Sodom and Gomorra, and Abraham went with them to conduct them on the way.
BrentonAnd the men having risen up from thence looked towards Sodom and Gomorrha. And Abraam went with them, attending them on their journey.
GreekἘξαναστάντες δὲ ἐκεῖθεν οἱ ἄνδρες κατέβλεψαν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον Σοδόμων καὶ Γομόῤῥας. Ἁβραὰμ δὲ συνεπορεύετο μετʼ αὐτῶν, συμπροπέμπων αὐτούς.

ThomsonAnd the Lord said, Shall I hide from My servant Abraham, what I am going to do?
BrentonAnd the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraam my servant what things I intend to do?
GreekὉ δὲ Κύριος εἶπε, οὐ μὴ κρύψω ἐγὼ ἀπὸ Ἁβραὰμ τοῦ παιδός μου ἃ ἐγὼ ποιῶ.

ThomsonAbraham shall indeed become a nation great and numerous; and by him all the nations of the earth are to be blessed.
BrentonBut Abraam shall become a great and populous nation, and in him shall all the nations of the earth be blest.
GreekἉβραὰμ δὲ γινόμενος ἔσται εἰς ἔθνος μέγα καὶ πολὺ, καὶ ἐνευλογηθήσονται ἐν αὐτῷ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τῆς γῆς.

ThomsonFor I know that he will command his children and his household after him, who are to keep the ways of the Lord, to execute judgment and justice, that the Lord may bring upon Abraham all that He hath spoken to him.
BrentonFor I know that he will order his sons, and his house after him, and they will keep the ways of the Lord, to do justice and judgment, that the Lord may bring upon Abraam all things whatsoever he has spoken to him.
GreekἬδειν γὰρ ὅτι συντάξει τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτοῦ, καὶ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ μετʼ αὐτὸν, καὶ φυλάξουσι τὰς ὁδοὺς Κυρίου, ποιεῖν δικαιοσύνην καὶ κρίσιν, ὅπως ἂν ἐπαγάγῃ Κύριος ἐπὶ Ἁβραὰμ πάντα ὅσα ἐλάλησε πρὸς αὐτόν.

ThomsonThen the Lord said, The cry of Sodom and Gomorra hath been multiplied before Me, and their sins are exceedingly great, therefore
BrentonAnd the Lord said, The cry of Sodom and Gomorrha has been increased towards me, and their sins are very great.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ Κύριος, κραυγὴ Σοδόμων καὶ Γομόῤῥας πεπλήθυνται πρὸς μὲ, καὶ αἱ ἁμαρτίαι αὐτῶν μεγάλαι σφόδρα.

ThomsonI am come down to see whether they do to each other according to the cry which is come to me; and if not, that I may know.
BrentonI will therefore go down and see, if they completely correspond with the cry which comes to me, and if not, that I may know.
GreekΚαταβὰς οὖν ὄψομαι, εἰ κατὰ τὴν κραυγὴν αὐτῶν τὴν ἐρχομενεην πρὸς μὲ, συντελοῦνται· εἰ δὲ μὴ, ἵνα γνῶ.

ThomsonNow the men had turned thence and were gone on to Sodom, but Abraham was still standing before the Lord.
BrentonAnd the men having departed thence, came to Sodom; and Abraam was still standing before the Lord.
GreekΚαὶ ἀποστρέψαντες ἐκεῖθεν οἱ ἄνδρες, ἦλθον εἰς Σόδομα· Ἁβραὰμ δὲ ἔτι ἦν ἑστηκὼς ἐναντίον Κυρίου.

ThomsonAnd Abraham drew near and said, Thou wouldst not destroy a righteous with a wicked man! Shall a righteous man be as the wicked?
BrentonAnd Abraam drew nigh and said, Wouldest thou destroy the righteous with the wicked, and shall the righteous be as the wicked?
GreekΚαὶ ἐγγίσας Ἁβραὰμ, εἶπε, μὴ συναπολέσῃς δίκαιον μετὰ ἀσεβοῦς· καὶ ἔσται ὁ δίκαιος ὡς ὁ ἀσεβής.

ThomsonShould there be fifty righteous men in the city, wilt thou destroy them? Wilt thou not spare the whole city for the sake of fifty righteous, if they be there?
BrentonShould there be fifty righteous in the city, wilt thou destroy them? wilt thou not spare the whole place for the sake of the fifty righteous, if they be in it?
GreekἘὰν ὦσι πεντήκοντα δίκαιοι ἐν τῇ πόλει, ἀπολεῖς αὐτούς; οὐκ ἀνήσεις πάντα τὸν τόπον ἕνεκεν τῶν πεντήκοντα δικαίων, ἐὰν ὦσιν ἐν αὐτῇ;

ThomsonThou canst not do such a thing as this to slay the righteous with the wicked. Shall the righteous be as the wicked? No, no; Thou who judgest the whole earth; wilt not thou execute judgment?
BrentonBy no means shalt thou do as this thing is so as to destroy the righteous with the wicked, so the righteous shall be as the wicked: by no means. Thou that judgest the whole earth, shalt thou not do right?
GreekΜηδαμῶς σὺ ποιήσεις ὡς τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο, τοῦ ἀποκτεῖναι δίκαιον μετὰ ἀσεβοῦς, καὶ ἔσται ὁ δίκαιος ὡς ὁ ἀσεβής· μηδαμῶς· ὁ κρίνων πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν, οὐ ποιήσεις κρίσιν;

ThomsonAnd the Lord said, If there be among the Sodomites fifty righteous men in the city, I will spare the whole city and the whole place for their sake.
BrentonAnd the Lord said, If there should be in Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole city, and the whole place for their sakes.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ Κύριος, ἐὰν ὦσιν ἐν Σοδόμοις πεντήκοντα δίκαιοι ἐν τῇ πόλει, ἀφήσω ὅλην τὴν πόλιν, καὶ πάντα τὸν τόπον διʼ αὐτούς.

ThomsonThen Abraham answered and said, Now I have taken upon me to speak to my Lord, I who am but dust and ashes!
BrentonAnd Abraam answered and said, Now I have begun to speak to my Lord, and I am earth and ashes.
GreekΚαὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Ἁβραὰμ εἶπε, νῦν ἠρξάμην λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν Κύριόν μου· ἐγὼ δὲ εἰμὶ γῆ καὶ σποδός.

ThomsonBut if the fifty righteous be lessened to forty-five wilt thou for want of the five destroy the whole city? And he said, I will not destroy it, if I find there forty-five.
BrentonBut if the fifty righteous should be diminished to forty-five, wilt thou destroy the whole city because of the five wanting? And he said, I will not destroy it, if I should find there forty-five.
GreekἘὰν δὲ ἐλαττονωθῶσιν οἱ πεντήκοντα δίκαιοι εἰς τεσσαρακονταπέντε, ἀπολεῖς ἕνεκεν τῶν πέντε πᾶσαν τὴν πόλιν; καὶ εἶπεν, οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσω, ἐὰν εὕρω ἐκεῖ τεσσαρακονταπέντε.

ThomsonAnd Abraham proceeded farther to speak to him and said, But if there be found there forty? And he said For the sake of the forty I will not destroy it.
BrentonAnd he continued to speak to him still, and said, But if there should be found there forty? And he said, I will not destroy it for the forty's sake.
GreekΚαὶ προσέθηκεν ἔτι λαλῆσαι πρὸς αὐτὸν, καὶ εἶπεν, ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ τεσσαράκοντα· καὶ εἶπεν, οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσω ἕνεκεν τῶν τεσσαράκοντα.

ThomsonThen Abraham said, Wilt Thou, O Lord, be offended if I speak? But if there be found there thirty?
BrentonAnd he said, Will there be anything against me, Lord, if I shall speak? but if there be found there thirty? And he said, I will not destroy it for the thirty's sake.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε, μή τι Κύριε ἐὰν λαλήσω; ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ τριάκοντα; καὶ εἶπεν, οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσω ἕνεκεν τῶν τριάκοντα.

ThomsonAnd He said, I will not destroy it, for the sake of the thirty. Again Abraham said, Since I am permitted to speak to the Lord, If twenty be found there? And He said I will not destroy it, if I find twenty there.
BrentonAnd he said, Since I am able to speak to the Lord, what if there should be found there twenty? And he said, I will not destroy it, if I should find there twenty.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν, ἐπειδὴ ἔχω λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν Κύριον, ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ εἴκοσι; καὶ εἶπεν, οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσω, ἐὰν εὕρω ἐκεῖ εἴκοσι.

ThomsonAnd Abraham said, Wilt Thou, O Lord, be offended, if I speak yet once more? But if ten be found there? And He said, For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.
BrentonAnd he said, Will there be anything against me, Lord, if I speak yet once? but if there should be found there ten? And he said, I will not destroy it for the ten's sake.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπε, μή τι Κύριε ἐὰν λαλήσω ἔτι ἅπαξ; ἐὰν δὲ εὑρεθῶσιν ἐκεῖ δέκα; καὶ εἶπεν, οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσω ἕνεκεν τῶν δέκα.

ThomsonThen the Lord having done speaking to Abraham departed, and Abraham returned to his place.
BrentonAnd the Lord departed, when he left off speaking to Abraam, and Abraam returned to his place.
GreekἈπῆλθε δὲ ὁ Κύριος, ὡς ἐπαύσατο λαλῶν τῷ Ἁβραάμ· καὶ Ἁβραὰμ ἀπέστρεψεν εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ.
