ThomsonNOW there had been a famine in the land besides the former famine which happened in the time of Abraham. And Isaak went to Abimelech the king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

Thomsonand multiply thy seed like the stars of heaven. And to thy seed I will give all this land; and by thy seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;

Thomsonthe men of the place made inquiry respecting his wife Rebekka; and he said, She is my sister, for he was afraid to say, She is my wife, lest peradventure the men of the place should kill him for Rebekka’s sake, for she was of a very beautiful countenance.
BrentonAnd the men of the place questioned him concerning Rebecca his wife, and he said, She is my sister, for he feared to say, She is my wife, lest at any time the men of the place should slay him because of Rebecca, because she was fair.

ThomsonHowever he continued there a long time; for Abimelech king of the Gerarites happening to look through a window saw Isaak dallying with Rebekka his wife.
BrentonAnd he remained there a long time, and Abimelech the king of Gerara leaned to look through the window, and saw Isaac sporting with Rebecca his wife.

ThomsonWhereupon Abimelech called Isaak and said to him certainly she is thy wife. Why then didst thou say, She is my sister? And Isaak said to him, Because I thought I might perhaps die for her.
BrentonAnd Abimelech called Isaac, and said to him, Is she then thy wife? why hast thou said, She is my sister? And Isaac said to him, I did so, for I said, Lest at any time I die on her account.

ThomsonAnd Abimelech said to him, Why hast thou dealt thus with us? In a little while some person of my family might have lain with thy wife, and thou wouldst have brought guilt upon us through ignorance.
BrentonAnd Abimelech said to him, Why hast thou done this to us? one of my kindred within a little had lain with thy wife, and thou wouldest have brought a sin of ignorance upon us.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ Ἀβιμέλεχ, τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν; μικροῦ ἐκοιμήθη τις ἐκ τοῦ γένους μου μετὰ τῆς γυναικός σου, καὶ ἐπήγαγες ἂν ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς ἄγνοιαν.

ThomsonThen Abimelech gave a strict charge to all his people saying, Whoever toucheth this man or his wife shall be liable to death.
BrentonAnd Abimelech charged all his people, saying, Every man that touches this man and his wife shall be liable to death.

ThomsonAnd Isaak sowed in that land and got that year an hundredfold of barley. And the Lord blessed him

Thomsonand the man was exalted and prospered more and more till he became exceeding great.

ThomsonAnd he had flocks and herds of cattle and many fields under cultivation. And the Philistines envied him;
BrentonAnd he had cattle of sheep, and cattle of oxen, and many tilled lands, and the Phylistines envied him.

Thomsonand all the wells which his father’s servants had digged in the time of his father, the Philistines stopped up and filled them with earth.
BrentonAnd all the wells which the servants of his father had dug in the time of his father, the Phylistines stopped them, and filled them with earth.

ThomsonUpon this Isaak departed thence and took up his abode in the valley of Gerar and dwelt there.

ThomsonAnd Isaak digged again the wells of water, which the servants of his father Abraham had digged and which the Philistines had stopped up, after the death of his father Abraham. And he called them by the same names, by which his father had named them.
BrentonAnd Isaac dug again the wells of water, which the servants of his father Abraam had dug, and the Phylistines had stopped them, after the death of his father Abraam; and he gave them names, according to the names by which his father named them.

ThomsonIsaak’s servants also digged in the valley of Gerar, and found there a well of spring water.
BrentonAnd the servants of Isaac dug in the valley of Gerara, and they found there a well of living water.
GreekΚαὶ ὤρυξαν οἱ παῖδες Ἰσαὰκ ἐν τῇ φάραγγι Γεράρων· καὶ εὗρον ἐκεῖ φρέαρ ὕδατος ζῶντος.

ThomsonBut the shepherds of the Gerarites contended with Isaak’s shepherds, saying the water was theirs. So he called the name of that well Injustice: because they did him injustice.
BrentonAnd the shepherds of Gerara strove with the shepherds of Isaac, saying that the water was theirs; and they called the name of the well, Injury, for they injured him.
GreekΚαὶ ἐμαχέσαντο οἱ ποιμένες Γεράρων μετὰ τῶν ποιμένων Ἰσαὰκ, φάσκοντες αὐτῶν εἶναι τὸ ὕδωρ· καὶ ἐκάλεσαν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ φρέατος, Ἀδικία· ἠδίκησαν γὰρ αὐτόν.

ThomsonThen he removed thence and digged another well; and about this also they contended; so he called its name Enmity.
BrentonAnd having departed thence he dug another well, and they strove also for that; and he named the name of it, Enmity.

ThomsonAnd he removed thence and digged another well; and about this they did not contend; So he called the name of it, Room-enough; saying, For now the Lord hath made room for us, though he hath increased us in the land.
BrentonAnd he departed thence and dug another well; and they did not strive about that; and he named the name of it, Room, saying, Because now the Lord has made room for us, and has increased us upon the earth.
GreekἈπᾴρας δὲ ἐκεῖθεν ὤρυξε φρέαρ ἕτερον· καὶ οὐκ ἐμαχέσαντο περὶ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐπωνόμασε τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, Εὐρυχωρία, λέγων, διότι νῦν ἐπλάτυνε Κύριος ἡμῖν, καὶ ηὔξησεν ἡμᾶς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.

Thomsonand the Lord appeared to him that night and said, I am the God of thy father Abraham; Fear not; for I am with thee; and I will bless thee and multiply thy seed for the sake of thy father Abraham.
BrentonAnd the Lord appeared to him in that night, and said, I am the God of Abraam thy father; fear not, for I am with thee, and I will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for the sake of Abraam thy father.

ThomsonSo he built there an altar and invoked the name of the Lord and fixed his tent there. And while the servants of Isaak were digging a well there in the valley of Gerar,
BrentonAnd he built there an altar, and called on the name of the Lord, and there he pitched his tent, and there the servants of Isaac dug a well in the valley of Gerara.

ThomsonAbimelech came to him from Gerar, accompanied with Ochozath his chamberlain and Phichol the general of his army.
BrentonAnd Abimelech came to him from Gerara, and so did Ochozath his friend, and Phichol the commander-in-chief of his army.
GreekΚαὶ Ἀβιμέλεχ ἐπορεύθη πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀπὸ Γεράρων, καὶ Ὁχοζὰθ ὁ νυμφαγωγὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ Φιχὼλ ὁ ἀρχιστράτηγος τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonAnd Isaak said to them, Why are you come to me, seeing you have hated me and sent me away from you?
BrentonAnd Isaac said to them, Wherefore have ye come to me? whereas ye hated me, and sent me away from you.
GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰσαὰκ, ἵνα τί ἤλθετε πρός με; ὑμεῖς δὲ ἐμισήσατέ με, καὶ ἐξαπεστείλατέ με ἀφʼ ὑμῶν.

ThomsonAnd they said, We saw plainly that the Lord is with thee; therefore we said, Let there be an oath between us and thee; and we will make a covenant with thee
BrentonAnd they said, We have surely seen that the Lord was with thee, and we said, Let there be an oath between us and thee, and we will make a covenant with thee,

Thomsonthat thou wilt not do us an injury, as we have not hated thee but used thee well and sent thee away in peace, and thou art now blessed of the Lord.
Brentonthat thou shalt do no wrong by us, as we have not abhorred thee, and according as we have treated thee well, and have sent thee forth peaceably; and now thou art blessed of the Lord.

ThomsonAnd early next morning they arose and swore one to the other. And Isaak dismissed them and they departed from him in peace.
BrentonAnd they arose in the morning, and swore each to his neighbour; and Isaac sent them forth, and they departed from him in safety.

ThomsonAnd it happened that on that very day the servants of Isaak came and told him of the well which they had been digging and said, We have found water. So he called it, Oath. For this cause they call the name of the city, Well of Oath, even at this day.
