ThomsonNOW when Rachel saw that she bore no children to Jacob, she envied her sister and said to Jacob, Give me children, else I shall die.
BrentonAnd Rachel having perceived that she bore Jacob no children, was jealous of her sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children; and if not, I shall die.

ThomsonAnd at the time of the wheat harvest Reuben went out and found in the field mandragore apples and brought them to his mother Leia. And Rachel said to her sister Leia, Give me some of thy son’s mandragores.
BrentonAnd Ruben went in the day of barley-harvest, and found apples of mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Lea; and Rachel said to Lea her sister, Give me of thy son's mandrakes.

ThomsonAnd Leia said, Is it not enough for thee that thou hast taken my husband? Wouldst thou take also my son’s mandragores? And Rachel said, Shall I not have them on this condition? Let him be with thee to night for thy son’s mandragores.
BrentonAnd Lea said, Is it not enough for thee that thou hast taken my husband, wilt thou also take my son's mandrakes? And Rachel said, Not so: let him lie with thee to-night for thy son's mandrakes.

ThomsonSo when Jacob was coming from the field in the evening, Leia went out to meet him and said, Thou must come in to me today; for I have hired thee for my son’s mandragores. And he lay with her that night,

ThomsonWhereupon Leia said, God hath now endowed me with a good dowry. My husband will make choice of me, for I have born him six sons. So she called his name Zabulon.

ThomsonUpon which Laban said to him, If I have found favour in thy sight, I would avert this evil: for God hath blessed me by thy coming.

ThomsonThy stock was small before I came; but it is increased to a multitude, and the Lord hath blessed thee by my attendance. Now then, when shall I provide a house for myself?
BrentonFor it was little thou hadst before my time, and it is increased to a multitude, and the Lord God has blessed thee since my coming; now then, when shall I set up also my own house?
GreekΜικρὰ γὰρ ἦν ὅσα σοι ἐναντίον ἐμοῦ, καὶ ηὐξήθη εἰς πλῆθος· καὶ εὐλόγησέ σε Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ἐπὶ τῷ ποδί μου· νῦν οὖν πότε ποιήσω κᾀγὼ ἐμαυτῷ οἶκον;

ThomsonAnd Laban said, What shall I give thee? To which Jacob replied, Thou shalt not give me any thing. If thou wilt do this for me, I will again feed thy flock and keep watch.
BrentonAnd Laban said to him, What shall I give thee? and Jacob said to him, Thou shalt not give me anything; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again tend thy flocks and keep them.

ThomsonLet all thy flocks this day pass in review and separate thou from them every grey sheep among the lambs, and every one speckled and spotted among the goats.
BrentonLet all thy sheep pass by to-day, and separate thence every grey sheep among the rams, and every one that is speckled and spotted among the goats— this shall be my reward.

ThomsonSuch shall be my hire and my righteousness shall answer for me in time to come; for my wages are apparent to thee. Whatever is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and grey among the sheep, if found with me, let it be deemed stolen.
BrentonAnd my righteousness shall answer for me on the morrow, for it is my reward before thee: whatever shall not be spotted and speckled among the goats, and grey among the rams, shall be stolen with me.

ThomsonAnd that very day he separated the goats which were speckled and spotted, both male and female, and every one among the lambs which was greyish and every one in which there was a mixture of white, and delivered them into the hands of his sons,
BrentonAnd he separated in that day the spotted and speckled he-goats, and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, and all that was grey among the rams, and every one that was white among them, and he gave them into the hand of his sons.

Thomsonand set three days journey between them and Jacob. And Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.
BrentonAnd he set a distance of a three days' journey between them and Jacob. And Jacob tended the cattle of Laban that were left behind.

ThomsonAnd Jacob took him rods of the storax and almond and plane-tree and peeled off the white bark, and twisting it round the green, the white which he peeled off appeared speckled.
BrentonAnd Jacob took to himself green rods of storax tree and walnut and plane-tree; and Jacob peeled in them white stripes; and as he drew off the green, the white stripe which he had made appeared alternate on the rods.

ThomsonAnd he placed the rods which he had peeled in the watering troughs, in order that, when the flocks came to drink, they might engender at the rods, while they were drinking with the rods in view.
BrentonAnd he laid the rods which he had peeled, in the hollows of the watering-troughs, that whensoever the cattle should come to drink, as they should have come to drink before the rods, the cattle might conceive at the rods.

BrentonSo the cattle conceived at the rods, and the cattle brought forth young speckled, and streaked and spotted with ash-coloured spots.

ThomsonAnd when Jacob had separated the lambs and placed before the ewes a spotted ram and all that had spots among the lambs, then he kept the flocks which were for himself apart by themselves and did not mix them with the flocks of Laban.
BrentonAnd Jacob separated the lambs, and set before the sheep a speckled ram, and every variegated one among the lambs, and he separated flocks for himself alone, and did not mingle them with the sheep of Laban.

ThomsonAnd at the season when the sheep were engendering and conceiving, Jacob put the rods in the troughs before some, that they might engender before the rods; but before others that had lambed he did not place them.
BrentonAnd it came to pass in the time wherein the cattle became pregnant, conceiving in the belly, Jacob put the rods before the cattle in the troughs, that they might conceive by the rods.

ThomsonThus the indifferent became Laban’s but the choicest were Jacob’s.
BrentonBut he did not put them in indiscriminately whenever the cattle happened to bring forth, but the unmarked ones were Laban's, and the marked ones Jacob's.
