3
Thomsonfor out of that well they watered the flocks. Now there was a great stone on the mouth of the well, and when all the flocks were collected there, the shepherds rolled away the stone from the mouth of the well, and watered the sheep; and then put the stone again in its place on the mouth of the well.
BrentonAnd there were all the flocks gathered, and they used to roll away the stone from the mouth of the well, and water the flocks, and set the stone again in its place on the mouth of the well.

ThomsonThen Jacob said to them, There is yet much day. It is not yet time for the cattle to be folded. Water the flocks and lead them off to feed.
BrentonAnd Jacob said, It is yet high day, it is not yet time that the flocks be gathered together; water ye the flocks, and depart and feed them.
8
ThomsonBut they said, We cannot, till all the shepherds are come together. Then they will roll the stone from the mouth of the well; and we will water the flocks.
BrentonAnd they said, We shall not be able, until all the shepherds be gathered together, and they shall roll away the stone from the mouth of the well, then we will water the flocks.
9

BrentonWhile he was yet speaking to them, behold, Rachel the daughter of Laban came with her father's sheep, for she fed the sheep of her father.

14
ThomsonAnd Laban said to him, Thou art of my bones and of my flesh. And when Jacob had been with him a month,
BrentonAnd Laban said to him, Thou art of my bones and of my flesh; and he was with him a full month.
15
ThomsonLaban said to Jacob, Because thou art indeed my brother, thou shalt not serve me for nothing. Tell me what must be thy wages.
BrentonAnd Laban said to Jacob, Surely thou shalt not serve me for nothing, because thou art my brother; tell me what thy reward is to be.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ Λάβαν τῷ Ἰακὼβ, ὅτι γὰρ ἀδελφός μου εἶ, οὐ δουλεύσεις μοι δωρεάν· ἀπάγγειλόν μοι τίς ὁ μισθός σου ἐστί;
16
ThomsonNow Laban had two daughters. The name of the eldest was Leia; and the name of the youngest, Rachel.
BrentonNow Laban had two daughters, the name of the elder was Lea, and the name of the younger, Rachel.
17
ThomsonLeia’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was of a beautiful countenance, and a very comely person.
BrentonAnd the eyes of Lea were weak. But Rachel was beautiful in appearance, and exceedingly fair in countenance.
18
ThomsonAnd Jacob loved Rachel, therefore he said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy youngest daughter.
BrentonAnd Jacob loved Rachel, and said, I will serve thee seven years for thy younger daughter Rachel.
19
ThomsonAnd Laban said to him, It is better for me to give her to thee than to give her to another man. Abide with me.
BrentonAnd Laban said to him, It is better that I should give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man; dwell with me.
20
ThomsonSo Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they appeared to him as a few days, because he loved her.
BrentonAnd Jacob served for Rachel seven years, and they were before him as a few days, by reason of his loving her.
21
ThomsonThen Jacob said to Laban, Give me my wife, for the days are completed, that I may go in unto her.
BrentonAnd Jacob said to Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.

25
ThomsonAnd in the morning, when Jacob saw it was Leia, he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done to me? Did I not serve thee for Rachel? Why then hast thou deceived me?
BrentonAnd it was morning, and behold it was Lea; and Jacob said to Laban, What is this that thou hast done to me? did I not serve thee for Rachel? and wherefore hast thou deceived me?
GreekἘγένετο δὲ πρωῒ, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦν Λεία· εἶπε δὲ Ἰακὼβ τῷ Λάβαν, τί τοῦτο ἐποίησάς μοι; οὐ περὶ Ῥαχὴλ ἐδούλευσα παρὰ σοι; καὶ ἱνατί παρελογίσω με;
26
ThomsonAnd Laban answered, It is not customary with us in this place to give the younger before the elder.
BrentonAnd Laban answered, It is not done thus in our country, to give the younger before the elder.
27
ThomsonFinish therefore this one’s week, and I will give thee the other for the service which thou mayst perform for me yet other seven years.
BrentonFulfil then her sevens, and I will give to thee her also in return for thy labour, which thou labourest with me, yet seven other years.
28
ThomsonAnd Jacob did so. And when he had finished this one’s week, Laban gave him to wife his daughter Rachel;
BrentonAnd Jacob did so, and fulfilled her sevens; and Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to wife.

BrentonAnd he went in to Rachel; and he loved Rachel more than Lea; and he served him seven other years.
31
ThomsonNow when the Lord God saw that Leia was slighted, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.
BrentonAnd when the Lord God saw that Lea was hated, he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.
32
ThomsonAnd Leia conceived and bore Jacob a son and called his name Reuben; saying, Because the Lord hath seen my affliction; therefore he hath given me a son. Now therefore my husband will love me.
BrentonAnd Lea conceived and bore a son to Jacob; and she called his name, Ruben; saying, Because the Lord has looked on my humiliation, and has given me a son, now then my husband will love me.
33
ThomsonAnd she conceived again, and bore to Jacob another son, and said, Because the Lord hath heard that I am slighted, he hath given me this son also; so she called his name Symeon.
BrentonAnd she conceived again, and bore a second son to Jacob; and she said, Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given to me this one also; and she called his name, Simeon.
34
ThomsonAnd she conceived again and bore a son, and said, Now will my husband abide with me for I have born him three sons; therefore she called his name Levi.
BrentonAnd she conceived yet again, and bore a son, and said, In the present time my husband will be with me, for I have born him three sons; therefore she called his name, Levi.
35
ThomsonAnd she conceived again and bore a son and said, Now for this also I will praise the Lord, therefore she called his name Juda. Then she ceased from bearing.
BrentonAnd having conceived yet again, she bore a son, and said, Now yet again this time will I give thanks to the Lord; therefore she called his name, Juda; and ceased bearing.
