ThomsonWhereupon Juda said to Aunan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife and be a husband to her and raise up a seed for thy brother.

ThomsonBut when Aunan knew that the seed would not be his, it came to pass that when he went in unto his brother’s wife he shed it on the ground; that he might not give seed to his brother.

ThomsonAnd it appeared evil in the sight of God that he had done this, therefore he caused him also to die.

ThomsonThen Juda said to Thamar his daughter in law, Continue a widow in thy father’s house till my son Selom grow up. For he said, Peradventure he also may die as his brothers did. So Thamar went and dwelt at her father’s house.
BrentonAnd Judas said to Thamar, his daughter-in-law, Sit thou a widow in the house of thy father-in-law, until Selom my son be grown; for he said, Lest he also die as his brethren; and Thamar departed, and sat in the house of her father.

ThomsonBut the time was prolonged and Sava the wife of Juda died. And when Juda was comforted he went up to his sheep shearers, he and his shepherd Eiras the Odollamite, to Thamna.
BrentonAnd the days were fulfilled, and Sava the wife of Judas died; and Judas, being comforted, went to them that sheared his sheep, himself and Iras his shepherd the Odollamite, to Thamna.

ThomsonAnd it was told Thamar his daughter-in-law saying, Lo! thy father-in-law is going up to Thamna to shear his sheep.

ThomsonWhereupon she put off the robes of her widowhood and put on a veil and adorned herself and sat near the gates of Ainan in the way to Thamna. For she saw that Selom was grown up and that he had not given her to him for a wife.
BrentonAnd having taken off the garments of her widowhood from her, she put on a veil, and ornamented her face, and sat by the gates of Ænan, which is in the way to Thamna, for she saw that Selom was grown; but he gave her not to him for a wife.

ThomsonAnd when Juda saw her, he thought she was a harlot, for she had covered her face and he did not know her.
BrentonAnd when Judas saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she covered her face, and he knew her not.
GreekΚαὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν Ἰούδας ἔδοξεν αὐτὴν πόρνην εἶναι· κατεκαλύψατο γὰρ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτῆς καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνω αὐτήν.

ThomsonSo he turned aside to her and said to her, Let me come in unto thee. For he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, What wilt thou give me if thou come in unto me?
BrentonAnd he went out of his way to her, and said to her, Let me come in to thee; for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law; and she said, What wilt thou give me if thou shouldest come in to me?

ThomsonTo which he replied, I will send thee a kid of the goats from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?
BrentonAnd he said, I will send thee a kid of the goats from my flock; and she said, Well, if thou wilt give me an earnest, until thou send it.
GreekὉ δὲ εἶπεν, ἐγώ σοι ἀποστελλῶ ἔριφον αἰγῶν ἐκ τῶν προβάτων μον· ἡ δὲ εἶπεν, ἐὰν δῷς μοι ἀῤῥαβῶνα, ἕως τοῦ ἀποστεῖλαί σε.

ThomsonAnd he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy ring and bracelet and the staff in thy hand. So he gave them to her, and went in unto her, and she conceived by him.
BrentonAnd he said, What is the earnest that I shall give thee? and she said, Thy ring, and thy bracelet, and the staff in thy hand; and he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.

ThomsonAnd Juda sent the kid of the goats by the hands of his shepherd the Odollamite to receive from the woman the pledge.

ThomsonBut he not finding her asked the men of the place, Where is the harlot that was at Ainan by the way side? And they said, There was not a harlot there.

GreekἘπηρώτησε δὲ τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς ἐκ τοῦ τόπου, ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ πόρνη ἡ γενομένη ἐν Αἰνὰν ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ; καὶ εἶπαν, οὐκ ἦν ἐνταῦθα πόρνη.

ThomsonThereupon he returned to Juda and said, I have not found her. And the men of the place said there was not a harlot there.
BrentonAnd he returned to Judas, and said, I have not found her; and the men of the place say, There is no harlot here.
GreekΚαὶ ἀπεστράφη πρὸς Ἰούδαν, καὶ εἶπεν, οὐχ εὗρον· καὶ οἱ ἄνθρωποι οἱ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου λέγουσι, μὴ εἶναι ὧδε πόρνην.

ThomsonThen Juda said, Let her keep them. But perhaps we may be laughed at. I indeed sent the kid. Thou however hast not found her.
BrentonAnd Judas said, Let her have them, but let us not be ridiculed; I sent this kid, but thou hast not found her.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ Ἰούδας, ἐχέτω αὐτά· ἀλλὰ μή ποτε καταγελασθῶμεν· ἐγὼ μὲν ἀπέσταλκα τὸν ἔριφον τοῦτον, σὺ δὲ οὐχ εὕρηκας.

ThomsonNow after three months it was told Judas saying, Thamar thy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot, and lo! she is with child by her whoredom. Whereupon Juda said, Bring her out and let her be burned.
BrentonAnd it came to pass after three months, that it was told Judas, saying, Thamar thy daughter-in-law has grievously played the harlot, and behold she is with child by whoredom; and Judas said, Bring her out, and let her be burnt.
GreekἘγένετο δὲ μετὰ τρίμηνον ἀνηγγέλη τῷ Ἰούδα, λέγοντες, ἐκπεπόρνευκε Θάμαρ ἡ νύμφη σου, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχει ἐκ πορνείας· Εἶπε δὲ Ἰούδας, ἐξαγάγετε αὐτὴν, καὶ κατακαυθήτω.

ThomsonAnd when she was brought out she sent to her father-in-law saying, By the man to whom these belong I am with child. Moreover she said, Examine, whose is this ring and this bracelet and this staff?
BrentonAnd as they were bringing her, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, I am with child by the man whose these things are; and she said, See whose is this ring and bracelet and staff.
GreekΑὐτὴ δὲ ἀγομένη ἀπέστειλε πρὸς τὸν πενθερὸν αὐτὴς, λέγουσα, ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὕτινος ταῦτά ἐστιν, ἐγὼ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχω· καὶ εἶπεν, ἐπίγνωθι τίνος ὁ δακτύλιος, καὶ ὁ ὁρμίσκος καὶ ἡ ῥάβδος αὕτη.

ThomsonAnd Juda acknowledged them and said, Thamar hath more justice on her side than I, because I did not give her to my son Selom. And he proceeded no more to have knowledge of her.
BrentonAnd Judas knew them, and said, Thamar is cleared rather than I, forasmuch as I gave her not to Selom my son: and he knew her not again.
GreekἘπέγνω δὲ Ἰούδας, καὶ εἶπε, δεδικαίωται Θάμαρ ἢ ἐγώ· οὗ ἕνεκεν οὐκ ἔδωκα αὐτὴν Σηλὼμ τῷ υἱῷ μου· Καὶ οὐ προσέθετο ἔτι τοῦ γνῶναι αὐτήν.

ThomsonAnd when the time of her delivery came she had twins.
BrentonAnd it came to pass when she was in labour, that she also had twins in her womb.
GreekἘγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἔτικτε, καὶ τῇδε ἦν δίδυμα ἐν τῇ γαστρὶ αὐτῆς.

ThomsonAnd when she was in childbirth, one put forth his hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread about his hand, saying, This will be the first-born.
BrentonAnd it came to pass as she was bringing forth, one thrust forth his hand, and the midwife having taken hold of it, bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This one shall come out first.
GreekἘγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ τίκτειν αὐτὴν, ὁ εἷς προεξήνεγκεν τὴν χεῖρα· λαβοῦσα δὲ ἡ μαῖα, ἔδησεν ἐπὶ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ κόκκινον, λέγουσα, οὗτος ἐξελεύσεται πρότερος.

ThomsonBut when it had drawn back its hand, his brother immediately came forth. Whereupon she said, What! Hath there been a breach made for thee? So she called his name Phares.
BrentonAnd when he drew back his hand, then immediately came forth his brother; and she said, Why has the barrier been cut through because of thee? and she called his name, Phares.
GreekὩς δὲ ἐπισυνήγαγε τὴν χεῖρα, καὶ εὐθὺς ἐξῆλθεν ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ· ἡ δὲ εἶπε, τί διεκόπη διὰ σὲ φραγμός; καὶ ἐκάλεσε τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, Φαρές.
