ThomsonNOW Jacob dwelt in the land where his father had sojourned in the land of Chanaan;
BrentonAnd Jacob dwelt in the land where his father sojourned, in the land of Chanaan.

Thomsonand this is the history of Jacob’s posterity. When Joseph was seventeen years of age and feeding his father’s sheep with his brothers, as he was young, namely with the sons of Balla and the sons of Zelpha his father’s wives, they carried an ill report against Israel their father.
BrentonAnd these are the generations of Jacob. And Joseph was seventeen years old, feeding the sheep of his father with his brethren, being young; with the sons of Balla, and with the sons of Zelpha, the wives of his father; and Joseph brought to Israel their father their evil reproach.

ThomsonNow Jacob loved Joseph above all his children because he was the son of his old age; and he had made him a robe of different colours.

ThomsonAnd he had another dream and told this to his father and his brothers and said, Behold, I have dreamed another dream, as if the sun and the moon and eleven stars made obeisance to me.
BrentonAnd he dreamed another dream, and related it to his father, and to his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed another dream: as it were the sun, and the moon, and the eleven stars did me reverence.

ThomsonIsrael said to Joseph, Are not thy brothers tending the flocks at Sychem? Come, let me send thee to them. And he said, I am ready.
BrentonAnd Israel said to Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed their flock in Sychem? Come, I will send thee to them; and he said to him, Behold, I am here.

ThomsonWhereupon Israel said to him, Go and see if thy brothers and the flocks be well and bring me word. So he despatched him from the valley of Chebron and he went to Sychem: and a man found him wandering in the plain.
BrentonAnd Israel said to him, Go and see if thy brethren and the sheep are well, and bring me word; and he sent him out of the valley of Chebron, and he came to Sychem.

ThomsonAnd the man asked him saying, What art thou seeking?
BrentonAnd a man found him wandering in the field; and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?

ThomsonTo which he replied, I am seeking my brothers, tell me where they are feeding.
BrentonAnd he said, I am seeking my brethren; tell me where they feed their flocks.
GreekὉ δὲ εἶπε, τοὺς ἀδελφούς μου ζητῶ· ἀπάγγειλόν μοι ποῦ βόσκουσιν.

ThomsonAnd the man said to him, They have removed from this place; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothaim. So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothaim.
BrentonAnd the man said to him, They have departed hence, for I heard them saying, Let us go to Dothaim; and Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothaim.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ ἄνθρωπος, ἀπῄρκασιν ἐντεῦθεν· ἤκουσα γὰρ αὐτῶν λεγόντων, πορευθῶμεν εἰς Δωθαείμ· καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ἰωσὴφ κατόπισθε τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ εὗρεν αὐτοὺς ἐν Δωθαείμ.

ThomsonNow when they saw him at a great distance before he came near them, they wickedly thought of killing him
BrentonAnd they spied him from a distance before he drew nigh to them, and they wickedly took counsel to slay him.
GreekΠροεῖδον δὲ αὐτὸν μακρόθεν πρὸ τοῦ ἐγγίσαι αὐτὸν πρὸς αὐτούς· καὶ ἐπονηρεύοντο τοῦ ἀποκτεῖναι αὐτόν.

Thomsonand said one to another, Behold the dreamer is coming.
BrentonAnd each said to his brother, Behold, that dreamer comes.
GreekΕἶπε δὲ ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ, ἰδοὺ ὁ ἐνυπνιαστὴς ἐκεῖνος ἔρχεται.

ThomsonNow therefore come let us kill him and throw him into one of these pits, and we will say a savage beast hath devoured him. And let us see what will become of his dreams.
BrentonNow then come, let us kill him, and cast him into one of the pits; and we will say, An evil wild beast has devoured him; and we shall see what his dreams will be.
GreekΝῦν οὖν δεῦτε ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτὸν, καὶ ῥίψωμεν αὐτὸν εἰς ἕνα τῶν λάκκων· καὶ ἐροῦμεν, θηρίον πονηρὸν κατέφαγεν αὐτόν· καὶ ὀψόμεθα, τί ἔσται τὰ ἐνύπνια αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonBut when Reuben heard he rescued him out of their hands and said, Let us not touch his life.
BrentonAnd Ruben having heard it, rescued him out of their hands, and said, Let us not kill him.
GreekἈκούσας δὲ Ῥουβὴν, ἐξείλετο αὐτὸν ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν· καὶ εἶπεν, οὐ πατάξωμεν αὐτὸν εἰς ψυχήν.

ThomsonReuben indeed said to them, Shed not blood. Throw him into one of these pits in the wilderness, but lay not a hand on him, in order that he might rescue him out of their hands and deliver him to his father.
BrentonAnd Ruben said to them, Shed not blood; cast him into one of these pits in the wilderness, but do not lay your hand upon him; that he might rescue him out of their hands, and restore him to his father.

ThomsonSo when Joseph came to his brothers they stripped him of the variegated robe which he had on
BrentonAnd it came to pass, when Joseph came to his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his many-coloured coat that was upon him.

Thomsonand took him and threw him into the pit. But the pit was empty. It had no water.

ThomsonThen they sat down to eat bread. And raising their eyes they looked; and lo! Ismaelite travellers were coming out of Galaad and their camels were loaded with spiceries, with balm and stacte, which they were carrying to Egypt.
BrentonAnd they sat down to eat bread; and having lifted up their eyes they beheld, and lo, Ismaelitish travellers came from Galaad, and their camels were heavily loaded with spices, and resin, and myrrh; and they went to bring them to Egypt.

ThomsonThereupon Juda said to his brothers, What advantage will it be though we slay our brother and conceal his blood?
BrentonAnd Judas said to his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
GreekΕἶπε δὲ Ἰούδας πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ, τί χρήσιμον, ἐὰν ἀποκτείνωμεν τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν, καὶ κρύψωμεν τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ;

ThomsonCome let us sell him to these Ismaelites and let not our hands be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh. So his brothers hearkened to him.

ThomsonAnd when the Madienite merchants came, they drew him up. They lifted Joseph up out of the pit and sold him to the Ismaelites for twenty pieces of gold; and they carried Joseph down to Egypt.
BrentonAnd the men, the merchants of Madian, went by, and they drew and lifted Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ismaelites for twenty pieces of gold; and they brought Joseph down into Egypt.

BrentonAnd Ruben returned to the pit, and sees not Joseph in the pit; and he rent his garments.
GreekἈνέστρεψε δὲ Ῥουβὴν ἐπὶ τὸν λάκκον, καὶ οὐχ ὁρᾷ τὸν Ἰωσὴφ ἐν τῷ λάκκῳ· καὶ διέῤῥηξε τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ.

Thomsonand returned to his brothers and said, The boy is gone. And as for me where now am I to go?
BrentonAnd he returned to his brethren and said, The boy is not; and I, whither am I yet to go?

Thomsonthey besmeared the coat with the blood and sent away the variegated robe and had it carried to his father and said, This we found. Examine whether it be thy son’s robe or not.
BrentonAnd they sent the coat of many colours; and they brought it to their father, and said, This have we found; know if it be thy son's coat or no.

ThomsonAnd he knew it and said, It is my son’s robe. An evil beast hath devoured him. A wild beast hath torn Joseph.
BrentonAnd he recognised it, and said, It is my son's coat, an evil wild beast has devoured him; a wild beast has carried off Joseph.
