ThomsonO LORD God, Thee I will glorify: in songs of praise I will extol Thy name. For Thou hast executed wonderful things, [according to] a counsel of old immutably true.
BrentonO Lord God, I will glorify thee, I will sing to thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things, even an ancient and faithful counsel. So be it.
GreekΚύριε ὁ Θεὸς δοξάσω σε, ὑμνήσω τὸ ὄνομά σου, ὅτι ἐποίησας θαυμαστὰ πράγματα, βουλὴν ἀρχαίαν ἀληθινήν· γένοιτο.

ThomsonBecause Thou hast reduced cities to a heap of ruins—cities made strong so that their foundations might not fall (a city of wicked men cannot be built to last forever);
BrentonFor thou hast made cities a heap, even cities made strong that their foundations should not fall: the city of ungodly men shall not be built for ever.
GreekὍτι ἔθηκας πόλεις εἰς χῶμα, πόλεις ὀχυρὰς τοῦ μὴ πεσεῖν αὐτῶν τὰ θεμέλια· τῶν ἀσεβῶν πόλις τὸν αἰῶνα οὐ μὴ οἰκοδομηθῇ.

Thomsontherefore the distressed people will bless Thee and the cities of injured men will give Thee thanks;
BrentonTherefore shall the poor people bless thee, and cities of injured men shall bless thee.
GreekΔιατοῦτο εὐλογήσει σε ὁ λαὸς ὁ πτωχὸς, καὶ πόλεις ἀνθρώπων ἀδικουμένων εὐλογήσουσί σε.

Thomsonfor Thou hast been the support of every humble city and the defence of them who were dispirited; by reason of their weakness. From wicked men Thou will deliver them. Thou art the support of the thirsty and the breath of men in distress.
BrentonFor thou hast been a helper to every lowly city, and a shelter to them that were disheartened by reason of poverty: thou shalt deliver them from wicked men: thou hast been a shelter of them that thirst, and a refreshing air to injured men.
GreekἘγένου γὰρ πάσῃ πόλει ταπεινῇ βοηθὸς, καὶ τοῖς ἀθυμήσασιν διʼ ἔνδειαν σκέπη, ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπων πονηρῶν ῥύσῃ αὐτούς· σκέπη διψώντων, καὶ πνεῦμα ἀνθρώπων ἀδικουμένων.

ThomsonWhen dispirited men shall be thirsting in Sion on account of wicked men to whom Thou hast delivered us up;
BrentonWe were as faint-hearted men thirsting in Sion, by reason of ungodly men to whom thou didst deliver us.
GreekὩς ἄνθρωποι ὀλιγόψυχοι διψῶντες ἐν Σιὼν, ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπων ἀσεβῶν, οἷς ἡμᾶς παρέδωκας.

Thomsonthen will the Lord of Hosts make provision for all the nations. On this mount they shall drink gladness: they shall drink wine
BrentonAnd the Lord of hosts shall make a feast for all the nations: on this mount they shall drink gladness, they shall drink wine:
GreekΚαὶ ποιήσει Κύριος σαβαὼθ πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσιν· ἐπὶ τὸ ὄρος τοῦτο πίονται εὐφροσύνην, πίονται οἶνον·

Thomsonand be anointed with myrrh on this mount. Hand down all these things to the nations, for this counsel is for all the nations.
Brentonthey shall anoint themselves with ointment in this mountain. Impart thou all these things to the nations; for this is God's counsel upon all the nations.

ThomsonMighty death had swallowed [all] up; but the Lord God hath again wiped every tear from every face; and removed from the whole earth the reproach of this people. For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken.
BrentonDeath has prevailed and swallowed men up; but again the Lord God has taken away every tear from every face. He has taken away the reproach of his people from all the earth: for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.

ThomsonAnd in that day they will say, Behold, our God in whom we trusted, will indeed save us. He is the Lord, for Him we waited and exulted; let us therefore rejoice in our salvation.
BrentonAnd in that day they shall say, Behold our God in whom we have trusted, and he shall save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for him, and we have exulted, and will rejoice in our salvation.

Thomsonand He shall cause His hands to relax, as He indeed humbled him to be slain, and shall humble his pride—those things on which He hath laid His hands,
BrentonAnd he shall spread forth his hands, even as he also brings down man to destroy him: and he shall bring low his pride in regard to the thing on which he has laid his hands.
GreekΚαὶ ἀνήσει τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ, ὃν τρόπον καὶ αὐτὸς ἐταπείνωσε τοῦ ἀπολέσαι· καὶ ταπεινώσει τὴν ὕβριν αὐτοῦ, ἐφʼ ἃ τὰς χεῖρας ἐπέβαλε.

Thomsonand shall lower the height of His wall of refuge; and it shall be laid low in the dust: in that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judea.
BrentonAnd he shall bring down the height of the refuge of the wall, and it shall come down even to the ground.
