ThomsonAH rebellious children! saith the Lord, you have formed a design, but not by Me: and thou hast made covenants—but not by My Spirit—that you may add sins to sins.
BrentonWoe to the apostate children, saith the Lord: ye have framed counsel, not by me, and covenants not by my Spirit, to add sins to sins:
GreekΟὐαὶ τέκνα ἀποστάται, λέγει Κύριος· ἐποιήσατε βουλὴν οὐ διʼ ἐμοῦ, καὶ συνθήκας οὐ διὰ τοῦ πνεύματός μου, προσθεῖναι ἁμαρτίας ἐφʼ ἁμαρτίας,

ThomsonThey are setting out to go down to Egypt, without having consulted Me—to be assisted by Pharao and protected by the Egyptians.
Brentoneven they that proceed to go down into Egypt, but they have not enquired of me, that they might be helped by Pharao, and protected by the Egyptians.

ThomsonFor the protection of Pharao will be your shame, and a disgrace to them who have trusted in Egypt.

Thomsonthey shall labour in vain with a people who will be of no service for assistance; but for a shame and disgrace.

ThomsonThis is the vision of the four-footed beasts in the desert: A lion and a lion’s whelp were in distress and difficulty; and from them went the asps and the brood of flying serpents, who carried their wealth on asses and camels to a nation which could not profit them.
BrentonThe Vision of the Quadrupeds in the Desert. In affliction and distress, where are the lion and lion's whelp, thence come also asps, and the young of flying asps, there shall they be who bore their wealth on asses and camels to a nation which shall not profit them.

ThomsonIn vain and to no purpose will the Egyptians help you. Announce to them: This application of yours is vain.
BrentonThe Egyptians shall help you utterly in vain: tell them, This your consolation is vain.
GreekΑἰγύπτιοι μάταια καὶ κενὰ ὠφελήσουσιν ὑμᾶς· ἀπάγγειλον αὐτοῖς, ὅτι ματαία ἡ παράκλησις ὑμῶν αὕτη.

ThomsonNow therefore sit down and write these things in a tablet and make a book that they may be for the appointed time—even for the time to come.
BrentonNow then sit down and write these words on a tablet, and in a book; for these things shall be for many long days, and even for ever.

Thomsontherefore this sin shall be to you like the tottering wall of a fortified city, which hath been taken by surprise, the fall of which is instantaneous.
Brentontherefore shall this sin be to you as a wall suddenly falling when a strong city has been taken, of which the fall is very near at hand.

ThomsonAnd its fall shall be like the breaking of an earthen vessel, the fragments of which are so small that there cannot be found among them a sherd on which thou canst carry fire or with which thou canst scoop up a little water.

ThomsonThus saith the Lord, the Holy Lord of Israel: When thou shalt return sighing, then thou shalt be saved, and thou shalt know in what a situation thou wast, when thou didst trust in these vanities. Your strength was vain, yet you would not hearken,

Thomsonbut said, We will flee on horses. Therefore flee you shall. And, [since you said,] We will mount swift coursers, therefore swift shall be your pursuers.
Brentonbut ye said, We will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will be aided by swift riders; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.

ThomsonA thousand shall flee at the voice of one; and at the voice of five, many thousands shall flee: until you be left like a beacon on a mountain, and like a flag staff upon a hill.
BrentonA thousand shall flee because of the voice of one, and many shall flee on account of the voice of five; until ye be left as a signal-post upon a mountain, and as one bearing an ensign upon a hill.

ThomsonBut again the Lord will wait to be gracious to you, and will therefore be exalted for compassionating you. Because the Lord your God is judge, happy are they who wait for Him.
BrentonAnd the Lord will again wait, that he may pity you, and will therefore be exalted that he may have mercy upon you: because the Lord your God is a judge: blessed are they that stay themselves upon him.
GreekΚαὶ πάλιν μενεῖ ὁ Θεὸς τοῦ οἰκτειρῆσαι ὑμᾶς, καὶ διατοῦτο ὑψωθήσεται τοῦ ἐλεῆσαι ὑμᾶς· διότι κριτὴς Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ὑμῶν· μακάριοι οἱ ἐμμένοντες ἐπʼ αὐτῷ.

ThomsonBecause a holy people will dwell in Sion, and Jerusalem with weeping cried, Have mercy upon me. Therefore He will have mercy upon thee. When He heard the sound of thy cry, He hearkened to thee.
BrentonFor the holy people shall dwell in Sion: and whereas Jerusalem has wept bitterly, saying, Pity me; he shall pity thee: when he perceived the voice of thy cry, he hearkened to thee.

ThomsonWhen the Lord shall have given thee bread of affliction and stinted water, they who lead thee astray shall no more come near thee. Because thine eyes will see them who are leading thee astray
BrentonAnd though the Lord shall give you the bread of affliction and scant water, yet they that cause thee to err shall no more at all draw nigh to thee; for thine eyes shall see those that cause thee to err,
GreekΚαὶ δώσει Κύριος ὑμῖν ἄρτον θλίψεως, καὶ ὕδωρ στενὸν, καὶ οὐκ ἔτι μὴ ἐγγίσωσί σοι οἱ πλανῶντές σε· ὅτι οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ὄψονται τοὺς πλανῶντάς σε,

Thomsonand thine ears will hear the words of the deceivers behind thee who say, This is the way let us walk in it, whether to the right or left.
Brentonand thine ears shall hear the words of them that went after thee to lead thee astray, who say, This is the way, let us walk in it, whether to the right or to the left.

ThomsonTherefore thou wilt defile thine idols plated with silver, and cut to pieces those overlaid with gold, and scatter them like polluted water and cast them out as dirt.
BrentonAnd thou shalt pollute the plated idols, and thou shalt grind to powder the gilt ones, and shalt scatter them as the water of a removed woman, and thou shalt thrust them forth as dung.

ThomsonThen shall there be rain for the seed of thy land, and the bread of the increase of thy land shall be both abundant and nutritive; and thy cattle shall feed in rich and large pastures.
BrentonThen shall there be rain to the seed of thy land; and the bread of the fruit of thy land shall be plenteous and rich: and thy cattle shall feed in that day in a fertile and spacious place.

ThomsonAnd there shall be on every lofty mountain, and on every high hill streams of water in that day, when many shall be perishing and when towers may be falling.

ThomsonAnd the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun; and the light of the sun shall on that day be seven fold; when the Lord will heal the bruises of His people, and when He will cure thy painful wound.
BrentonAnd the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold in the day when the Lord shall heal the breach of his people, and shall heal the pain of thy wound.

ThomsonBehold the name of the Lord cometh for a time, a burning wrath. The oracle of His lips with glory is an oracle full of indignation, and the fury of the wrath devoureth like fire;
BrentonBehold, the name of the Lord comes after a long time, burning wrath: the word of his lips is with glory, a word full of anger, and the anger of his wrath shall devour as fire.
GreekἸδοὺ τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου ἔρχεται διὰ χρόνου, καιόμενος θυμός· μετὰ δόξης τὸ λόγιον τῶν χειλέων αὐτοῦ, λόγιον ὀργῆς πλῆρες, καὶ ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θυμοῦ ὡς πῦρ ἔδεται.

Thomsonand His breath is like a sweeping flood in a valley, which will reach up to the neck and swell to confound nations for their vain errors. When error shall pursue them and overtake them,
BrentonAnd his breath, as rushing water in a valley, shall reach as far as the neck, and be divided, to confound the nations for their vain error: error also shall pursue them, and overtake them.
GreekΚαὶ τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτοῦ ὡς ὕδωρ ἐν φάραγγι σὺρον, ἥξει ἕως τοῦ τραχήλου, καὶ διαιρεθήσεται, τοῦ ταράξαι ἔθνη ἐπὶ πλανήσει ματαίᾳ, καὶ διώξεται αὐτοὺς πλάνησις, καὶ λήψεται αὐτοὺς κατὰ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν.

Thomsonbefore their face ought not you to rejoice continually and continually go to My solemnities like them who are celebrating a festival? Like them who are gladdened you should go with instrumental music to the mount of the Lord, to the God of Israel,
BrentonMust ye always rejoice, and go into my holy places continually, as they that keep a feast? and must ye go with a pipe, as those that rejoice, into the mountain of the Lord, to the God of Israel?
GreekΜὴ διαπαντὸς δεῖ ὑμᾶς εὐφραίνεσθαι, καὶ εἰσπορεύεσθαι εἰς τὰ ἅγιά μου διαπαντὸς, ὡσεὶ ἑορτάζοντας, καὶ ὡσεὶ εὐφραινομένους εἰσελθεῖν μετὰ αὐλοῦ εἰς τὸ ὄρος Κυρίου πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν τοῦ Ἰσραήλ;

Thomsonwhen the Lord shall cause the glory of His voice to be heard—when, to display the fury of His arm with wrath and indignation and consuming fire, He shall utter tremendous thunder, accompanied with a furious tempest of rain and hail.
BrentonAnd the Lord shall make his glorious voice to be heard, and the wrath of his arm, to make a display with wrath and anger and devouring flame: he shall lighten terribly, and his wrath shall be as water and violent hail.
GreekΚαὶ ἀκουστὴν ποιήσει Κύριος τὴν δόξαν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὸν θυμὸν τοῦ βραχίονος αὐτοῦ, δεῖξαι μετὰ θυμοῦ καὶ ὀργῆς, καὶ φλογὸς κατεσθιούσης, κεραυνώσει βιαίως, καὶ ὡς ὕδωρ καὶ χάλαζα συγκαταφερομένη βίᾳ.

ThomsonFor by the voice of the Lord the Assyrians shall be beaten down by the stroke with which He will smite them.
BrentonFor by the voice of the Lord the Assyrians shall be overcome, even by the stroke wherewith he shall smite them.
GreekΔιὰ γὰρ τῆς φωνῆς Κυρίου ἡττηθήσονται Ἀσσύριοι, τῇ πληγῇ ᾗ ἂν πατάξῃ αὐτούς.

ThomsonThis indeed he shall have from all around him—from every place whence they had a hope of that assistance on which he relied, they will with timbrels and the kithara fight against him, after his rout.
BrentonAnd it shall happen to him from every side, that they from whom their hope of assistance was, in which he trusted, themselves shall war against him in turn with drums and with harp.
GreekΚαὶ ἔσται αὐτῷ κυκλόθεν, ὅθεν ἦν αὐτῶν ἡ ἐλπὶς τῆς βοηθείας, ἐφʼ ᾗ αὐτὸς ἐπεποίθει, αὐτοὶ μετὰ τυμπάνων καὶ κιθάρας πολεμήσουσιν αὐτὸν ἐκ μεταβολῆς.

ThomsonOf thee He will previously demand (and hast thou not provided for His reign) a deep valley and wood laid up in piles; the wrath of the Lord will be fire and wood in abundance like a valley burning with brimstone.
BrentonFor thou shalt be required before thy time: has it been prepared for thee also to reign? nay, God has prepared for thee a deep trench, wood piled, fire and much wood: the wrath of the Lord shall be as a trench kindled with sulphur.
GreekΣὺ γὰρ πρὸ ἡμερῶν ἀπαιτηθήσῃ· μὴ καί σοὶ ἡτοιμάσθη βασιλεύειν; φάραγγα βαθείαν, ξύλα κείμενα, πῦρ καὶ ξύλα πολλὰ, ὁ θυμὸς Κυρίου ὡς φάραγξ ὑπὸ θείου καιομένη.
