ThomsonTHE Beloved had a vineyard on a mountain in a rich soil, [and said]:
BrentonNow I will sing to my beloved a song of my beloved concerning my vineyard. My beloved had a vineyard on a high hill in a fertile place.
GreekἌσω δὴ τῷ ἠγαπημένῳ ᾆσμα τοῦ ἀγαπητοῦ μου τῷ ἀμπελῶνί μου. Ἀμπελὼν ἐγενήθη τῷ ἠγαπημένῳ, ἐν κέρατι, ἐν τόπῳ πίονι.

ThomsonAnd I hedged it around and trenched it; and planted it with the vine of Sorek; and in the midst of it built a tower, and hewed out therein a wine lake; and waited for its producing grapes, and it produced poisonous berries.
BrentonAnd I made a hedge round it, and dug a trench, and planted a choice vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and dug a place for the wine-vat in it: and I waited for it to bring forth grapes, and it brought forth thorns.
GreekΚαὶ φραγμὸν περιέθηκα, καὶ ἐχαράκωσα, καὶ ἐφύτευσα ἄμπελον σωρὴκ, καὶ ᾠκοδόμησα πύργον ἐν μέσῳ αὐτοῦ, καὶ προλήνιον ὤρυξα ἐν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἔμεινα τοῦ ποιῆσαι σταφυλὴν, καὶ ἐποίησεν ἀκάνθας.

ThomsonNow therefore, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Juda, judge between Me and My vineyard.
BrentonAnd now, ye dwellers in Jerusalem, and every man of Juda, judge between me and my vineyard.
GreekΚαὶ νῦν οἱ ἐνοικοῦντες ἐν Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ Ἰούδα, κρίνατε ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ ἀναμέσον τοῦ ἀμπελῶνός μου.

ThomsonWhat more could I do for My vineyard that I have not done for it? Because I expected that it would produce grapes, and it hath produced poisonous berries;
BrentonWhat shall I do any more to my vineyard, that I have not done to it? Whereas I expected it to bring forth grapes, but it has brought forth thorns.
GreekΤί ποιήσω ἔτι τῷ ἀμπελῶνί μου, καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησα αὐτῷ; διότι ἔμεινα τοῦ ποιῆσαι σταφυλὴν, ἐποίησε δὲ ἀκάνθας.

Thomsonnow therefore I will tell you, what I purpose to do with My vineyard; I take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be exposed to plunder; and I will demolish its wall, and it shall be for a common walk;
BrentonAnd now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be for a spoil; and I will pull down its walls, and it shall be left to be trodden down.
GreekΝῦν δὲ ἀναγγελῶ ὑμῖν τί ἐγὼ ποιήσω τῷ ἀμπελῶνί μου· ἀφελῶ τὸν φραγμὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔσται εἰς διαρπαγήν· καὶ καθελῶ τὸν τοῖχον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔσται εἰς καταπάτημα·

Thomsonand I will abandon my vineyard that it may neither be pruned nor digged; and brambles shall overrun it as a waste; and I will give a charge to the clouds not to shed rain upon it.
BrentonAnd I will forsake my vineyard; and it shall not be pruned, nor dug, and thorns shall come up upon it as on barren land; and I will command the clouds to rain no rain upon it.
GreekΚαὶ ἀνήσω τὸν ἀμπελῶνά μου, καὶ οὐ τμηθῇ, οὐδὲ μὴ σκαφῇ· καὶ ἀναβήσονται εἰς αὐτὸν, ὡς εἰς χέρσον ἄκανθαι· καὶ ταῖς νεφέλαις ἐντελοῦμαι, τοῦ μὴ βρέξαι εἰς αὐτὸν ὑετόν.

ThomsonFor the vineyard of the Lord of Hosts is the house of Israel; and the men of Juda His beloved plant. I waited for their executing justice, but they committed injustice, and promoted not righteousness, but an outcry.
BrentonFor the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Juda his beloved plant: I expected it to bring forth judgment, and it brought forth iniquity; and not righteousness, but a cry.
GreekὉ γὰρ ἀμπελὼν Κυρίου σαβαὼβ, οἶκος τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ, καὶ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ Ἰούδα νεόφυτον ἠγαπημένον· ἔμεινα τοῦ ποιῆσαι κρίσιν, ἐποίησε δὲ ἀνομίαν, καὶ οὐ δικαιοσύνην, ἀλλὰ κραυγήν.

ThomsonWoe unto them who join house to house, and who are bringing field nearer to field, that they may take something from their neighbour. Are you alone to dwell in the land?
BrentonWoe to them that join house to house, and add field to field, that they may take away something of their neighbour's: will ye dwell alone upon the land?
GreekΟὐαὶ οἱ συνάπτοντες οἰκίαν πρὸς οἰκίαν, καὶ ἀγρὸν πρὸς ἀγρὸν ἐγγίζοντες, ἵνα τοῦ πλησίον ἀφέλωνταί τι· μὴ οἰκήσετε μόνοι ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς;

ThomsonFor these things have come to the ears of the Lord of Hosts. For though there be many houses they shall be for desolation—though great and fair, there shall be no inhabitants therein.
BrentonFor these things have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts: for though many houses should be built, many and fair houses shall be desolate, and there shall be no inhabitants in them.
GreekἨκούσθη γὰρ εἰς τὰ ὦτα Κυρίου σαβαὼθ ταῦτα· ἐὰν γὰρ γένωνται οἰκίαι πολλαί, εἰς ἔρημον ἔσονται μεγάλαι καὶ καλαὶ, καὶ οὐκ ἔσονται οἱ ἐνοικοῦντες ἐν αὐταῖς.

ThomsonFor the ground worked by ten yoke of oxen will not yield a bath of wine; and he who soweth six measures shall not raise three.
BrentonFor where ten yoke of oxen plough the land shall yield one jar-full, and he that sows six homers shall produce three measures.
GreekΟὗ γὰρ ἐργῶνται δέκα ζεύγη βοῶν, ποιήσει κεράμιον ἕν· καὶ ὁ σπείρων ἀρτάβας ἓξ, ποιήσει μέτρα τρία.

ThomsonWoe to them, who rise early to follow strong drink, and continue at it till late at night; for the wine will inflame them.
BrentonWoe to them that rise up in the morning, and follow strong drink; who wait at it till the evening: for the wine shall inflame them.
GreekΟὐαὶ οἱ ἐγειρόμενοι τοπρωῒ, καὶ τὸ σίκερα διώκοντες, οἱ μένοντες τὸ ὀψέ· ὁ γὰρ οἶνος αὐτοὺς συνκαύσει.

ThomsonFor with kithara and psaltery, tabors and pipes, they drink wine; but they regard not the works of the Lord, nor consider the operations of His hands.
BrentonFor they drink wine with harp, and psaltery, and drums, and pipes: but they regard not the works of the Lord, and consider not the works of his hands.
GreekΜετὰ γὰρ κιθάρας καὶ ψαλτηρίου καὶ τυμπάνων καὶ αὐλῶν τον οἶνον πίνουσι, τὰ δὲ ἔργα Κυρίου οὐκ ἐμβλέπουσι, καὶ τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ οὐ κατανοοῦσι.

ThomsonTherefore my people are become captives, because they did not know the Lord; and multitudes have died of famine and thirst;
BrentonTherefore my people have been taken captive, because they know not the Lord: and there has been a multitude of dead bodies, because of hunger and of thirst for water.
GreekΤοίνυν αἰχμάλωτος ὁ λαός μου ἐγενήθη, διὰ τὸ μὴ εἰδέναι αὐτοὺς τὸν Κύριον· καὶ πλῆθος ἐγενήθη νεκρῶν, διὰ λιμὸν καὶ δίψος ὕδατος.

Thomsonand Hades hath enlarged its appetite, and opened its mouth, that there may be no want of room; and down shall go the honourable and the great, and the rich and the pestilent men of the land.
BrentonTherefore hell has enlarged its desire and opened its mouth without ceasing: and her glorious and great, and her rich and her pestilent men shall go down into it.
GreekΚαὶ ἐπλάτυνεν ὁ ᾅδης τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ, καὶ διήνοιξε τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ, τοῦ μὴ διαλιπεῖν· καὶ καταβήσονται οἱ ἔνδοξοι καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι καὶ οἱ πλούσιοι καὶ οἱ λοιμοὶ αὐτῆς.

ThomsonThe commoner shall be humbled; and the noble dishonoured; and the lofty eyes shall be brought down;
BrentonAnd the mean man shall be brought low, and the great man shall be disgraced, and the lofty eyes shall be brought low.
GreekΚαὶ ταπεινωθήσεται ἄνθρωπος, καὶ ἀτιμασθήσεται ἀνήρ· καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ οἱ μετέωροι ταπεινωθήσονται.

Thomsonand the Lord of Hosts shall be exalted in judgment; and God, the Holy One, shall be glorified by righteousness;
BrentonBut the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and the holy God shall be glorified in righteousness.
GreekΚαὶ ὑψωθήσεται Κύριος σαβαὼθ ἐν κρίματι, καὶ ὁ Θεὸς ὁ ἅγιος δοξασθήσεται ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ·

Thomsonand they who have been plundered shall be fed like bulls, and lambs shall graze the waste places of them who have been removed.
BrentonAnd they that were spoiled shall be fed as bulls, and lambs shall feed on the waste places of them that are taken away.
GreekΚαὶ βοσκηθήσονται οἱ διηρπασμένοι ὡς ταῦροι, καὶ τὰς ἐρήμους τῶν ἀπειλημμένων ἄρνες φάγονται.

ThomsonWoe unto them who draw out sins as for a long cable, and iniquities as for an ox chain;
BrentonWoe to them that draw sins to them as with a long rope, and iniquities as with a thong of the heifer's yoke:
GreekΟὐαὶ οἱ ἐπισπώμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας ὡς σχοινίῳ μακρῷ, καὶ ὡς ζυγοῦ ἱμάντι δαμάλεως τὰς ἀνομίας·

Thomsonwho say, Let what he is to do approach speedily that we may see; and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel come that we may know it.

GreekΟὐαὶ οἱ ἰσχύοντες ὑμῶν, οἱ πίνοντες τὸν οἶνον, καὶ οἱ δυνάσται οἱ κεραννύντες τὸ σίκερα,

Thomsonwho justify the wicked for rewards; and deprive the just of his right.
Brentonwho justify the ungodly for rewards, and take away the righteousness of the righteous.
Greekοἱ δικαιοῦντες τὸν ἀσεβῆ ἕνεκεν δώρων, καὶ τὸ δίκαιον τοῦ δικαίου αἴροντες.

ThomsonFor this cause, as stubble will be set on fire by a coal, and consumed by a neglected flame; their root shall be like touch wood, and their blossom shall ascend like dust: for they desired not the law of the Lord of Hosts: but provoked to wrath the manifestion of the Holy One of Israel.
BrentonTherefore as stubble shall be burnt by a coal of fire, and shall be consumed by a violent flame, their root shall be as chaff, and their flower shall go up as dust: for they rejected the law of the Lord of hosts, and insulted the word of the Holy One of Israel.
GreekΔιατοῦτο ὃν τρόπον καυθήσεται καλάμη ὑπὸ ἄνθρακος πυρός, καὶ συγκαυθήσεται ὑπὸ φλογὸς ἀνειμένης, ἡ ῥίζα αὐτῶν ὡς χνοῦς ἔσται, καὶ τὸ ἄνθος αὐτῶν ὡς κονιορτὸς ἀναβήσεται· οὐ γὰρ ἠθέλησαν τὸν νόμον Κυρίου σαβαὼθ, ἀλλὰ τὸ λόγιον τοῦ ἁγίου Ἰσραὴλ παρώξυναν.

ThomsonWherefore the Lord of Hosts was incensed against His people, and He stretched out His hand against them and smote them: and the mountains were convulsed, and their carcasses were as dung in the highway: and for all this His anger was not turned away; but still His hand is high.
BrentonTherefore the Lord of hosts was greatly angered against his people, and he reached forth his hand upon them, and smote them: and the mountains were troubled, and their carcases were as dung in the midst of the way: yet for all this his anger has not been turned away, but his hand is yet raised.
GreekΚαὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ Κύριος σαβαὼθ ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπέβαλε τὴν χεῖρα ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς, καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτούς· καὶ παρωξύνθη τὰ ὄρη, καὶ ἐγενήθη τὰ θνησιμαῖα αὐτῶν ὡς κοπρία ἐν μέσῳ ὁδοῦ· καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τούτοις οὐκ ἀπεστράφη ὁ θυμὸς αὐτοῦ, ἀλλὰ ἔτι ἡ χεὶρ ὑψηλή.

ThomsonTherefore He will erect a standard among the nations far off, and summon them from the extremity of the earth; and behold! with speed they are coming swiftly.
BrentonTherefore shall he lift up a signal to the nations that are afar, and shall hiss for them from the end of the earth; and, behold, they are coming very quickly.
GreekΤοιγαροῦν ἀρεῖ σύσσημον ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσι τοῖς μακρὰν, καὶ συριεῖ αὐτοὺς ἀπʼ ἄκρου τῆς γῆς· καὶ ἰδοὺ ταχὺ κούφως ἔρχονται.

ThomsonThey will not hunger, nor will they be weary: they will not slumber, nor lie down to sleep; nor shall their girdles be loosed from their loins, nor the latchets of their sandals broken.
BrentonThey shall not hunger nor be weary, neither shall they slumber nor sleep; neither shall they loose their girdles from their loins, neither shall their shoe-latchets be broken.

ThomsonTheir arrows are sharp; and their bows are bent: the hoofs of their horses have been accounted as flint, and the wheels of their chariots are like a whirlwind.
BrentonWhose arrows are sharp, and their bows bent; their horses' hoofs are counted as solid rock: their chariot-wheels are as a storm.
GreekὯν τὰ βέλη ὀξέα ἐστί, καὶ τὰ τόξα αὐτῶν ἐντεταμένα· οἱ πόδες τῶν ἵππων αὐτῶν ὡς στερεὰ πέτρα ἐλογίσθησαν· οἱ τροχοὶ τῶν ἁρμάτων αὐτῶν ὡς καταιγίς.

ThomsonThey growl like lions, and are at hand like young lions. He will seize and roar like a wild beast and drive out the people, and there shall be none to deliver them.

ThomsonOn that day He will roar against them like the roaring of the billowy sea; and they will look upwards to the heaven and down on the earth; and lo! distressful darkness in their tribulation.
BrentonAnd he shall roar on account of them in that day, as the sound of the swelling sea; and they shall look to the land, and, behold, there shall be thick darkness in their perplexity.
GreekΚαὶ βοήσει διʼ αὐτοὺς τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, ὡς φωνὴ θαλάσσης κυμαινούσης· καὶ ἐμβλέψονται εἰς τὴν γῆν, καὶ ἰδοὺ σκότος σκληρὸν ἐν τῇ ἀπορίᾳ αὐτῶν.
