ThomsonTHUS saith the Lord: Go down to the house of the king of Juda and thou shalt speak there this word

Thomsonand say, Hear a word of the Lord, O king of Juda, who art seated on the throne of David, thou and thy household and thy people and they who enter in at these gates!
Brentonand thou shalt say, Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Juda, that sittest on the throne of David, thou, and thy house, and thy people, and they that go in at these gates:

ThomsonThus saith the Lord: Execute judgment and justice and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of him who wrongeth him; and over the stranger and the orphan and the widow tyrannise not; nor be guilty of impiety; nor shed innocent blood in this place.
Brentonthus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and justice, and rescue the spoiled out of the hand of him that wrongs him: and oppress not the stranger, and orphan, and widow, and sin not, and shed no innocent blood in this place.

ThomsonFor if you faithfully execute this charge, there shall enter in at the gates of this house, kings seated on the throne of David and riding in chariots and on horses, they and their servants and their people.
BrentonFor if ye will indeed perform this word, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, and riding on chariots and horses, they, and their servants, and their people.

ThomsonBut if you will not perform these things, by Myself I have sworn, saith the Lord, This house shall be a desolation.

ThomsonFor thus saith the Lord against the house of the king of Juda, though thou wert to Me as Galaad, as the top of Lebanon, I will make thee a desolation, cities uninhabitable.
BrentonFor thus saith the Lord concerning the house of the king of Juda; Thou art Galaad to me, and the head of Libanus: yet surely I will make thee a desert, even cities that shall not be inhabited:

ThomsonI will indeed bring against thee a destroyer, a man with his axe; and they shall cut down thy choice cedars and throw them into the fire.

ThomsonAnd when nations shall pass by this city, they will say, everyone to his neighbour, Why hath the Lord dealt thus with this great city?
BrentonAnd nations shall pass through this city, and each shall say to his neighbour, Why has the Lord done thus to this great city?
GreekΚαὶ διελεύσονται ἔθνη διὰ τῆς πόλεως ταύτης, καὶ ἐρεῖ ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ, διατί ἐποίησε Κύριος οὕτως τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ τῇ μεγάλῃ;

ThomsonTo which it will be said in reply, Because they forsook the Lord their God and worshipped strange gods and served them.

ThomsonWeep not for him who is dead, nor utter lamentations for him. Weep bitterly for him who is going away; for he shall never return, nor see anymore his native country.

Thomsonbut in the place to which I have transported him, there he shall die and this land he shall see no more.

ThomsonWith regard to him who is building himself a house, but not with righteousness, and lofty stories, but not with justice: he useth the service of his neighbour for nothing, and will not pay him his wages.
BrentonHe that builds his house not with justice, and his upper chambers not with judgment, who works by means of his neighbour for nothing, and will by no means give him his reward.

GreekὨκοδόμησας σεαυτῷ οἶκον σύμμετρον, ὑπερῷα ῥιπιστὰ διεσταλμένα θυρίσι, καὶ ἐξυλωμένα ἐν κέδρῳ, καὶ κεχρισμένα ἐν μίλτῳ.

ThomsonIs it thy desire to be made king? Because thou art instigated by thy father Achaz, are there not feasts? Are there not entertainments? Better were it for thee to execute judgment and justice.
BrentonShalt thou reign, because thou art provoked with thy father Achaz? they shall not eat, and they shall not drink: it is better for thee to execute judgment and justice.
GreekΜὴ βασιλεύσῃς, ὅτι σὺ παροξυνῇ ἐν Ἄχαζ τῷ πατρί σου; οὐ φάγονται, καὶ οὐ πίονται· βέλτιόν σε ποιεῖν κρίμα καὶ δικαιοσύνην.

ThomsonThey did not take cognirighteously the cause of the needy, is not this owing to thy not knowing Me? saith the Lord.
BrentonThey understood not, they judged not the cause of the afflicted, nor the cause of the poor: is not this thy not knowing me? saith the Lord.
GreekΟὐκ ἔγνωσαν, οὐκ ἔκριναν κρίσιν ταπεινῷ, οὐδὲ κρίσιν πένητος· οὐ τοῦτό ἐστι τὸ μὴ γηῶναί σε ἐμὲ; λέγει Κύριος.

ThomsonBehold thine eyes are not good, neither is thy heart; but they are bent upon thine inordinate desires and on the shedding of innocent blood, and on injustice, and on murder; that thou mayst perpetrate these things.
BrentonBehold, thine eyes are not good, nor thine heart, but they go after thy covetousness, and after the innocent blood to shed it, and after acts of injustice and slaughter, to commit them.

ThomsonHe shall be buried with the burial of an ass—being blotted out he shall be cast forth without the gates of Jerusalem.

ThomsonAscend Lebanon and scream; ascend Basan, and shout. Shout till thy voice reach the sea coast; for all thy lovers are destroyed.
BrentonGo up to Libanus, and cry; and utter thy voice to Basan, and cry aloud to the extremity of the sea: for all thy lovers are destroyed.

ThomsonI spake to thee respecting thy fall; but thou saidst, I will not listen. This hath been thy way from thy youth, thou hast not hearkened to My voice.
BrentonI spoke to thee on occasion of thy trespass, but thou saidst, I will not hearken. This has been thy way from thy youth, thou hast not hearkened to my voice.
GreekἘλάλησα πρὸς σὲ ἐν τῇ παραπτώσει σου, καὶ εἶπας, οὐκ ἀκούσομαι· αὕτη ἡ ὁδός σου ἐκ νεότητός σου, οὐκ ἤκουσας τῆς φωνῆς μου.

ThomsonAll thy shepherds shall be fed with wind; and all thy lovers shall go into captivity; that thou mayst then be ashamed and confounded on the account of them who love thee.

ThomsonAs I live, saith the Lord, though Jechonias may be made a son of Joakim, a king of Juda, a signet on My right hand,—I will drag thee out thence

Thomsonand deliver thee into the hands of them who seek thy life—them whose countenance thou dreadest—into the hands of the Chaldeans.

ThomsonRecord the chieftain himself as a man of low rank, exiled by the voice of a herald; for no increase from his seed shall sit on the throne of David, nor any more be chief in Juda.
BrentonWrite ye this man an outcast: for there shall none of his seed at all grow up to sit on the throne of David, or as a prince yet in Juda.
