ThomsonTHE word which came from the Lord to Jeremias:
BrentonConcerning Idumea, thus saith the Lord; There is no longer wisdom in Thæman, counsel has perished from the wise ones, their wisdom is gone,
GreekΤΗ ἸΔΟΥΜΑΙΑ, τάδε λέγει Κύριος, οὐκ ἔστιν ἔτι σοφία ἐν Θαιμὰν, ἀπώλετο βουλὴ ἐκ συνετῶν, ᾤχετο σοφία αὐτῶν, ἠπατήθη ὁ τόπος αὐτῶν·

ThomsonThus spake the Lord the God of Israel, saying: Write all the words which I have delivered to thee in a book;
Brentontheir place has been deceived. Dig deep for a dwelling, ye that inhabit Dædam, for he has wrought grievously: I brought trouble upon him in the time at which I visited him.
Greekβαθύνατε εἰς κάθισιν οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Δαιδὰμ, ὅτι δύσκολα ἐποίησεν· ἤγαγον ἐπʼ αὐτὸν ἐν χρόνῳ ᾧ ἐπεσκεψάμην ἐπʼ αὐτόν.

Thomsonfor behold the days are coming, saith the Lord, when I will bring back the captivity of My people Israel and Juda; and I will bring them to this land, which I gave to their fathers and they shall rule over it.
BrentonFor grape-gatherers are come, who shall not leave thee a remnant; as thieves by night, they shall lay their hand upon thy possessions.
GreekὍτι τρυγηταὶ ἦλθον, οἳ οὐ καταλείψουσί σοι κατάλειμμα· ὡς κλέπται ἐν νυκτὶ, ἑπιθήσουσι χεῖρα αὐτῶν.

ThomsonNow these are the words which the Lord spake concerning Israel and Juda.
BrentonFor I have stripped Esau, I have uncovered their secret places; they shall have no power to hide themselves, they have perished each by the hand of his brother, my neighbour, and it is impossible

ThomsonThus said the Lord: You shall hear the sound of terror. It is terror and not peace.
Brentonfor thy fatherless one to be left to live, but I shall live, and the widows trust in me.
Greekὑπολείπεσθαι ὀρφανόν σου, ἵνα ζήσηται· καὶ ἐγὼ ζήσομαι, καὶ αἱ χῆραι ἐπʼ ἐμὲ πεποίθασιν·

ThomsonInquire and see! Hath a male ever brought forth? Now with respect to the terror, in which they will hold their loins, it is indeed for a deliverance.

Brentonfor by myself I have sworn, saith the Lord, that thou shalt be in the midst of her an impassable land, and a reproach, and a curse; and all her cities shall be desert for ever.

ThomsonIn that day, saith the Lord, I will break the yoke from their neck, and burst their bonds asunder; and they shall no more work for strangers.
BrentonI have heard a report from the Lord, and he has sent messengers to the nations, saying, Assemble yourselves, and come against her; rise ye up to war.

ThomsonBut they must work for the Lord their God and I will raise up for them David their king.
BrentonI have made thee small among the nations, utterly contemptible among men.

BrentonThine insolence has risen up against thee, the fierceness of thine heart has burst the holes of the rocks, it has seized upon the strength of a lofty hill; for as an eagle he set his nest on high: thence will I bring thee down.

BrentonAnd Idumea shall be a desert: every one that passes by shall hiss at it.

ThomsonThus said the Lord: I raised up affliction; thy wound was grievous;
BrentonAs Sodom was overthrown and Gomorrha and they that sojourned in her, saith the Lord Almighty, no man shall dwell there, nor shall any son of man inhabit there.

Thomsonthere is none to plead thy cause; the attempts to cure thee increased thy pain; there is no relief for thee;
BrentonBehold, he shall come up as a lion out of the midst of Jordan to the place of Ætham: for I will speedily drive them from it, and do ye set the young men against her: for who is like me? and who will withstand me? and who is this shepherd, who shall confront me?

Thomsonall thy friends forgot thee. They would make no inquiry for thee, because I inflicted on thee the wound of an enemy, a severe chastisement for all thine iniquity. Thy sins had multiplied:
BrentonTherefore hear ye the counsel of the Lord, which he has framed against Idumea; and his device, which he has devised against the inhabitants of Thæman: surely the least of the sheep shall be swept off; surely their dwelling shall be made desolate for them.

Thomsontherefore all that devour thee shall be devoured, and all thine enemies shall eat their own flesh. For the multitude of thine iniquities (thy sins indeed were multiplied) they have done all these things to thee; but they who plunder thee shall be for plunder; and all who have preyed upon thee, I will give for a prey.
BrentonBehold, he shall look upon her as an eagle, and spread forth his wings over her strongholds; and the heart of the mighty men of Idumea shall be in that day as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

ThomsonBecause I will bring up the cure for thee I will cure thee, saith the Lord, of thy painful wound; because thou wast called the Outcast, the hunt is up after thee. Because there is none who seeketh this outcast,
BrentonConcerning the sons of Ammon thus saith the Lord, Are there no sons in Israel? or have they no one to succeed them? wherefore has Melchol inherited Galaad, and why shall their people dwell in their cities?
GreekΤΟΙΣ ΥΙΟΙΣ ἈΜΜΩΝ οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, μὴ υἱοὶ οὐκ εἰσὶν ἐν Ἰσραὴλ, ἢ παραληψόμενος οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῖς; διατί παρέλαβε Μελχὸλ τὴν Γαλαὰδ, καὶ ὁ λαὸς αὐτῶν ἐν πόλεσιν αὐτῶν ἐνοικήσει;

Thomsonthus saith the Lord: Behold I Myself will bring back the outcast of Jacob, and his captivity I will compassionate. And the city shall be rebuilt on its height; and the people shall sit for the administration of justice.
BrentonTherefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will cause to be heard in Rabbath a tumult of wars; and they shall become a waste and ruined place, and her altars shall be burned with fire; then shall Israel succeed to his dominion.

ThomsonAnd from them shall come forth singers-the sound of the sportive; and I will multiply them and they shall not be diminished.
BrentonHowl, O Esebon, for Gai has perished; cry, ye daughters of Rabbath, gird yourselves with sackclothes, and lament; for Melchol shall go into banishment, his priests and his princes together.

ThomsonAnd their sons shall come in as in former times; and their judicatories shall be established in My presence. And I will punish them who afflict them.
BrentonWhy do ye exult in the plains of the Enakim, thou haughty daughter, that trustest in thy treasures, that sayest, Who shall come in to me?

ThomsonHis own mighties shall preside over them; and from him his own chief shall come forth; and h e will gather them that they may return to Me-that he who hath given his heart, whoever he is, may return to Me, saith the Lord. -
BrentonBehold, I will bring terror upon thee, saith the Lord, from all the country round about thee; and ye shall be scattered every one right before him, and there is none to gather you.
GreekἸδοὺ ἐγὼ φέρω φόβον ἐπὶ σὲ, εἶπε Κύριος, ἀπὸ πάσης τῆς περιοίκου σου, καὶ διασπαρήσεσθε ἕκαστος εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ συνάγων.

ThomsonBecause the anger of the Lord hath gone forth-hath gone’ forth a furious anger, it will come whirling on the wicked-
BrentonConcerning Kedar the Queen of the Palace, whom Nabuchodonosor King of Babylon smote, thus saith the Lord; Arise ye, and go up to Kedar, and fill the sons of Kedem.
GreekΤΗ ΚΗΔΑΡ ΤΗ ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΑΥΛΗΣ, ἫΝ ἘΠΑΤΑΞΕ ΝΑΒΟΥΧΟΔΟΝΟΣΟΡ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΒΑΒΥΛΩΝΟΣ, οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, Ἀνάστητε, καὶ ἀνάβητε ἐπὶ Κηδὰρ, καὶ πλήσατε τοὺς υἱοὺς Κεδέμ.

Thomsonthe fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back, till He hath done-till He hath executed the purpose of His heart. In the latter days you will know these things.
BrentonThey shall take their tents and their sheep, they shall take for themselves their garments, and all their baggage and their camels; and summon ye destruction against them from every side.
GreekΣκηνὰς αὐτῶν, καὶ τὰ πρόβατα αὐτῶν λήψονται· ἱμάτια αὐτῶν, καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη αὐτῶν, καὶ καμήλους αὐτῶν λήψονται ἑαυτοῖς· καὶ καλέσατε ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς ἀπώλειαν κυκλόθεν.

BrentonFlee ye, dig very deep for a dwelling-place, ye that dwell in the palace; for the king of Babylon has framed a counsel, and devised a device against you.

BrentonRise up, and go up against a nation settled and dwelling at ease, who have no doors, nor bolts, nor bars, who dwell alone.

BrentonAnd their camels shall be a spoil, and the multitude of their cattle shall be destroyed: and I will scatter them as chaff with every wind, having their hair cut about their foreheads, I will bring on their overthrow from all sides, saith the Lord.

BrentonAnd the palace shall be a resting-place for ostriches, and desolate for ever: no man shall abide there, and no son of man shall dwell there.

BrentonConcerning Damascus. Emath is brought to shame, and Arphath: for they have heard an evil report: they are amazed, they are angry, they shall be utterly unable to rest.

BrentonAnd I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the streets of the son of Ader.
