15
ThomsonFor thus said the Lord, Fields and houses and vineyards shall again be possessed in this land.
BrentonThus said the Lord God of Israel; Take the cup of this unmixed wine from mine hand, and thou shalt cause all the nations to drink, to whom I send thee.
16
ThomsonAnd after I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Nerias, I prayed to the Lord, saying:
BrentonAnd they shall drink, and vomit, and be mad, because of the sword which I send among them.
17
ThomsonO self-existent Lord, Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by Thy great power and by Thy high and exalted arm. From Thee nothing can be hid.
BrentonSo I took the cup out of the Lord's hand, and caused the nations to whom the Lord sent me to drink:
18
ThomsonThou shewest mercy to thousands and retributest the sins of fathers into the bosoms of their children after them.
BrentonJerusalem, and the cities of Juda, and the kings of Juda, and his princes, to make them a desert place, a desolation, and a hissing;
19
ThomsonThou art the God, the Great, the Mighty One, the Lord of great counsel and mighty in works, the Mighty Omnipotent God, and the Lord of great renown. Thine eyes are on the ways of the children of men to give to every one according to his way.
Brentonand Pharao king of Egypt, and his servants, and his nobles, and all his people;
20
ThomsonThou hast done signs and wonders in the land of Egypt which continue even to this day; and in Israef and among the inhabitants of the earth; and hast made Thyself a name as at this day.
Brentonand all the mingled people, and all the kings of the Philistines, and Ascalon, and Gaza, and Accaron, and the remnant of Azotus,
21
ThomsonThou didst bring Thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders and with a strong hand and an outstretched arm and with stupendous visions,
Brentonand Idumea, and the land of Moab, and the children of Ammon,
22
Thomsonand gavest them this land which with an oath Thou hadst promised to their fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.
Brentonand the kings of Tyre, and the kings of Sidon, and the kings in the country beyond the sea,
23
ThomsonBut when they entered in and had taken possession of it, they hearkened not to Thy voice nor walked in Thy statutes. They did not do all that Thou commandedst them, so they have brought upon themselves all these evils.
Brentonand Dædan, and Thæman, and Ros, and every one that is shaved round about the face,
24
ThomsonBehold a multitude is come up against this city to take it; and this city is about to be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it, by reason of the sword and famine. As Thou hast spoken, so it hath come to pass.
Brentonand all the mingled people lodging in the wilderness,
25
ThomsonNow Thou sayest to me, Buy thee a field for it and had it witnessed; though the city is about to be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans.
Brentonand all the kings of Ælam, and all the kings of the Persians,
26
ThomsonThen a word of the Lord came to me saying,
Brentonand all the kings from the north, the far and the near, each one with his brother, and all the kingdoms which are on the face of the earth.
27
ThomsonI the Lord am the God of all flesh. From Me nothing can be hid.
BrentonAnd thou shalt say to them, Thus said the Lord Almighty; Drink ye, be ye drunken; and ye shall vomit, and shall fall, and shall in nowise rise, because of the sword which I send among you.
28
ThomsonTherefore thus said the Lord the God of Israel: This city will assuredly be given up into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will take it.
BrentonAnd it shall come to pass, when they refuse to take the cup out of thine hand, to drink it, that thou shalt say, Thus said the Lord; Ye shall surely drink.
29
ThomsonAnd the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come and burn this city with fire; and they will burn those houses on the tops of which they have offered incense to Baal and poured out libations to strange gods, to provoke me.
BrentonFor I am beginning to afflict the city whereon my name is called, and ye shall by no means be held guiltless: for I am calling a sword upon all that dwell upon the earth.
30
ThomsonBecause the children of Israel and the children of Juda have done nothing but evil before Mine eyes from their youth-
BrentonAnd thou shalt prophesy against them these words, and shalt say, The Lord shall speak from on high, from his sanctuary he will utter his voice; he will pronounce a declaration on his place; and these shall answer like men gathering grapes: and destruction is coming on them that dwell on the earth,
31
Thomsonbecause this very city hath been an object of My wrath and of My resentment from the day it was built to this day;
Brentoneven upon the extreme part of the earth; for the Lord has a controversy with the nations, he is pleading with all flesh, and the ungodly are given to the sword, saith the Lord.
32
Thomsonlet him remove it from My presence on account of all the iniquities of the children of Israel and Juda, which they and their kings and their chiefs and their priests and their prophets, the men of Juda and the inhabitants of Jerusalem have done to provoke Me.
BrentonThus said the Lord; Behold, evils are proceeding from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind goes forth from the end of the earth.
33
ThomsonFor they have turned to Me their back and not their face. Though I taught them betimes, they would no more receive instruction,
BrentonAnd the slain of the Lord shall be in the day of the Lord from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth: they shall not be buried; they shall be as dung on the face of the earth.
34
Thomsonbut have set up their abominations in the house which is called by My name, and polluted it with their impurities;
BrentonHowl, ye shepherds, and cry; and lament, ye rams of the flock: for your days have been completed for slaughter, and ye shall fall as the choice rams.
35
Thomsonand have built up the altars to Baal which were in the valley of the son of Ennom to offer up their sons and their daughters to king Moloch-a thing which I never commanded them, nor did it ever come into My mind that they should commit such an abomination to cause Juda to transgress heinously.
BrentonAnd flight shall perish from the shepherds, and safety from the rams of the flock.
36
ThomsonBut now thus said the Lord the God of Israel respecting this city, which as thou sayest shall be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon by sword and by famine and by pestilence:
BrentonA voice of the crying of the shepherds, and a moaning of the sheep and the rams: for the Lord has destroyed their pastures.
37
ThomsonBehold I will gather them from every land through which I have in My wrath and in My great indignation dispersed them; and I will bring them back to this place and cause them to live securely.
BrentonAnd the peaceable abodes that remain shall be destroyed before the fierceness of my anger.
38
ThomsonAnd they shall be My people and I will be their God.
BrentonHe has forsaken his lair, as a lion: for their land is become desolate before the great sword.
