1
ThomsonA WORD of the Lord which he spake against Babylon:
BrentonAnd it came to pass, when Jeremias ceased speaking to the people all the words of the Lord, for which the Lord had sent him to them, even all these words,
2
ThomsonProclaim among the nations, publish and conceal not—say, Babylon is taken; Bel is confounded; the fearless, the luxurious Mairodach is delivered up.
Brentonthat Azarias son of Maasæas spoke, and Joanan, the son of Careë, and all the men who had spoken to Jeremias, saying, It is false: the Lord has not sent thee to us, saying, Enter not into Egypt to dwell there:
3
ThomsonFor a nation is gone up against her from the north, which will make her land a desolation, so that none shall dwell therein, neither man nor beast.
Brentonbut Baruch the son of Nerias sets thee against us, that thou mayest deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, to kill us, and that we should be carried away captives to Babylon.
4
ThomsonIn those days, even at that time, shall come up the children of Israel, they and the children of Juda together: walking slow and weeping they will march on seeking the Lord their God.
BrentonSo Joanan, and all the leaders of the host, and all the people, refused to hearken to the voice of the Lord, to dwell in the land of Juda.
5
ThomsonThey will ask the way to Zion; for thitherward they will set their face; and they will come and flee to the Lord their God; for the everlasting covenant shall not be forgotten.
BrentonAnd Joanan, and all the leaders of the host, took all the remnant of Juda, who had returned to dwell in the land;
6
ThomsonMy people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds caused them to stray. On the mountains they caused them to wander. From mountain to hill they roamed. They forgot their place of rest.
Brentonthe mighty men, and the women, and the children that were left, and the daughters of the king, and the souls which Nabuzardan had left with Godolias the son of Achicam, and Jeremias the prophet, and Baruch the son of Nerias.
7
ThomsonAll that found them devoured them. Their enemies said, Let us not spare them because they sinned against the Lord. He who gathered their fathers hath a pasture of righteousness:
BrentonAnd they came into Egypt: for they hearkened not to the voice of the Lord: and they entered into Taphnas.
8
Thomsonremove out of Babylon and from the country of the Chaldeans, and go out and be like dragons before sheep.
BrentonAnd the word of the Lord came to Jeremias in Taphnas, saying,
9
ThomsonFor lo! I am raising up against Babylon assemblies of nations from the north; and they shall be drawn up in array against her. Thence one shall be taken like the dart of a skillful warrior which shall not rebound in vain.
BrentonTake thee great stones, and hide them in the entrance, at the gate of the house of Pharao in Taphnas, in the sight of the men of Juda:
10
ThomsonSo Chaldea shall be for a prey. All that plunder it shall be satisfied.
Brentonand thou shalt say, Thus has the Lord said; Behold, I will send, and will bring Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and he shall place his throne upon these stones which thou hast hidden, and he shall lift up weapons against them.
11
ThomsonBecause you rejoiced and triumphed when you were plundering My heritage—because you frisked about like calves in a pasture, and brandished your horns like bulls;
BrentonAnd he shall enter in, and smite the land of Egypt, delivering some for death to death; and some for captivity to captivity; and some for the sword to the sword.
12
Thomsonyour mother shall be greatly ashamed: she who brought you forth for prosperity shall be confounded. Being the hindmost of nations;
BrentonAnd he shall kindle a fire in the houses of their gods, and shall burn them, and shall carry them away captives: and shall search the land of Egypt, as a shepherd searches his garment; and he shall go forth in peace.
13
Thomsona desert because of the wrath of the Lord, she shall not be inhabited; but shall be entirely a desolation.
BrentonAnd he shall break to pieces the pillars of Heliopolis that are in On, and shall burn their houses with fire.
