Thomson.r. THUS said the Lord: Behold, against Babylon and against the Chaldean inhabitants I am raising up a hot destroying wind.

BrentonThe Word that came to Jeremias for all the Jews dwelling in the land of Egypt, and for those settled in Magdolo and in Taphnas, and in the land of Pathura, saying,

GreekὉ ΛΟΓΟΣ Ὁ ΓΕΝΟΜΕΝΟΣ ΠΡΟΣ ἹΕΡΕΜΙΑΝ ἅπασι τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτου, καὶ τοῖς καθημένοις ἐν Μαγδωλῷ, καὶ ἐν Τάφνας, καὶ ἐν γῇ Παθούρης, λέγων,

ThomsonAnd against Babylon I will send scorners who will treat her with scorn and waste her land. Woe shall surround Babylon on all sides in the day of her action.

BrentonThus has the Lord God of Israel said; Ye have seen all the evils which I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon the cities of Juda; and, behold, they are desolate without inhabitants,

GreekΟὕτως εἶπε Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς Ἰσραὴλ, ὑμεῖς ἑωράκατε πάντα τὰ κακὰ ἃ ἐπήγαγον ἐπὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις Ἰούδα· καὶ ἰδού εἰσιν ἔρημοι ἀπὸ ἐνοίκων

ThomsonLet him, who bendeth the bow, bend it; and him, who hath a m o u r put it on; shew no compassion to her youths, and destroy utterly all her host.

Brentonbecause of their wickedness, which they have wrought to provoke me, by going to burn incense to other gods, whom ye knew not.

Greekἀπὸ προσώπου πονηρίας αὐτῶν, ἧς ἐποίησαν παραπικράναι με, πορευθέντες θυμιᾷν θεοῖς ἑτέροις, οἷς οὐκ ἔγνωτε.

ThomsonAnd let the wounded fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and those who are pierced through, fall in her streets. [li] (p) Since Israel and Juda are not quite forsaken by their God, the Lord Almighty, on account of their land being filled with iniquity by reason of the sanctuaries of Israel;

BrentonYet I sent to you my servants the prophets early in the morning, and I sent, saying, Do not ye this abominable thing which I hate.

GreekΚαὶ ἀπέστειλα πρὸς ὑμᾶς τοὺς παῖδάς μου τοὺς προφήτας ὄρθρου, καὶ ἀπέστειλα, λέγων, μὴ ποιήσητε τὸ πρᾶγμα τῆς μολύνσεως ταύτης, ἧς ἐμίσησα.

BrentonBut they hearkened not to me, and inclined not their ear to turn from their wickedness, so as not to burn incense to strange gods.

GreekΚαὶ οὐκ ἤκουσάν μου, καὶ οὐκ ἔκλιναν τὸ οὖς αὐτῶν ἀποστρέψαι ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν αὐτῶν, πρὸς τὸ μὴ θυμιᾷν θεοῖς ἑτέροις.

Thomsonflee out of Babylon and save every one his life and be not involved in her iniquity. For the time of her punishment is come from the Lord, and He is rendering to her a recompense.

BrentonSo mine anger and my wrath dropped upon them, and was kindled in the gates of Juda, and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they became a desolation and a waste, as at this day.

GreekΚαὶ ἔσταξεν ἡ ὀργή μου, καὶ ὁ θυμός μου, καὶ ἐξεκαύθη ἐν πύλαις Ἰούδα, καὶ ἔξωθεν Ἱερουσαλήμ· καὶ ἐγενήθησαν εἰς ἐρήμωσιν καὶ εἰς ἄβατον ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη.

ThomsonBabylon was a golden cup in the hand of the Lord, furnishing a plentiful draught to all the nations. Of her wine the nations drank, therefore they reeled.

BrentonAnd now thus has the Lord Almighty said, Wherefore do ye commit these great evils against your souls? to cut off man and woman of you, infant and suckling from the midst of Juda, to the end that not one of you should be left;

GreekΚαὶ νῦν οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος παντοκράτωρ, ἱνατί ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε κακὰ μεγάλα ἐπὶ ψυχαῖς ὑμῶν; ἐκκόψαι ὑμῶν ἄνθρωπον καὶ γυναῖκα, νήπιον καὶ θηλάζοντα ἐκ μέσου Ἰούδα, πρὸς τὸ μὴ καταλειφθῆναι ὑμῶν μηδένα,

ThomsonBut Babylon is suddenly fallen and broken. Utter a lamentation for her. Get balm for her deadly wound; perhaps she may be cured.

Brentonby provoking me with the works of your hands, to burn incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, into which ye entered to dwell there, that ye might be cut off, and that ye might become a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

Greekπαραπικράναι με ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις τῶν χειρῶν ὑμῶν, θυμιᾷν θεοῖς ἑτέροις ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, εἰς ἣν ἤλθετε κατοικεῖν ἐκεῖ, ἵνα κοπῆτε, καὶ ἵνα γένησθε εἰς κατάραν καὶ εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσι τῆς γῆς;

Thomson(c) We have administered medicines to Babylon, but she is not healed. Let us leave her and depart every one to his own land: for her judgment hath reached to heaven and mounted up to the stars.

BrentonHave ye forgotten the sins of your fathers, and the sins of the kings of Juda, and the sins of your princes, and the sins of your wives, which they wrought in the land of Juda, and in the streets of Jerusalem?

GreekΜὴ ἐπιλέλησθε ὑμεῖς τῶν κακῶν τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν, καὶ τῶν κακῶν τῶν βασιλέων Ἰούδα, καὶ τῶν κακῶν τῶν ἀρχόντων ὑμῶν, καὶ τῶν κακῶν τῶν γυναικῶν ὑμῶν, ὧν ἐποίησαν ἐν γῇ Ἰούδα, καὶ ἔξωθεν Ἱερουσαλήμ;

ThomsonThe Lord hath published His decree. Come let us proclaim in Sion the works of the Lord our God.

BrentonAnd have not ceased even to this day, and they have not kept to my ordinances, which I set before their fathers.

GreekΚαὶ οὐκ ἐπαύσαντο ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης, καὶ οὐκ ἀντείχοντο τῶν προσταγμάτων μου, ὧν ἔδωκα κατὰ πρόσωπον τῶν πατέρων αὐτῶν.

Thomson(p) Prepare the arrows. Fill the quivers. The Lord hath stirred up the spirit of the king of the Medes. For His wrath is against Babylon to destroy her utterly. For it is the vengeance of the Lord—the avengement of His people.

BrentonTherefore thus saith the Lord; Behold, I do set my face against you

GreekΔιατοῦτο οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐφίστημι τὸ πρόσωπόν μου,

ThomsonOn the walls of Babylon erect a standard; set the watch; have arms ready. Because the Lord hath undertaken; therefore He will accomplish what He hath spoken against the inhabitants of Babylon—

Brentonto destroy all the remnant that are in Egypt; and they shall fall by the sword, and by famine, and shall be consumed small and great: and they shall be for reproach, and for destruction, and for a curse.

Thomsonagainst them who dwell on many waters, and against the multitude of her treasures. Thine end is come, it is come indeed into thy bowels:

BrentonAnd I will visit them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have visited Jerusalem, with sword and with famine:

GreekΚαὶ ἐπισκέψομαι ἐπὶ τοὺς καθημένους ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, ὡς ἐπεσκεψάμην ἐπὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ, ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ καὶ ἐν λιμῷ,

Thomsonfor the Lord hath sworn by His arm, I will fill thee with men as with locusts; and they who go down shall utter a sound against thee.

Brentonand there shall not one be preserved of the remnant of Juda that sojourn in the land of Egypt, to return to the land of Juda, to which they hope in their hearts to return: they shall not return, but only they that escape.

Greekκαὶ οὐκ ἔσται σεσωσμένος οὐδεὶς τῶν ἐπιλοίπων Ἰούδα τῶν παροικούντων ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι εἰς γῆν Ἰούδα, ἐφʼ ἣν αὐτοὶ ἐλπίζουσι ταῖς ψυχαῖς αὐτῶν τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι ἐκεῖ· οὐ μὴ ἐπιστρέψωσιν, ἀλλʼ ἢ οἱ ἀνασεσωσμένοι.

Thomson(c) The Lord is He who made the earth by His power, who fitted up the world by His wisdom. By His understanding He stretched out the heaven.

BrentonThen all the men that knew that their wives burned incense, and all the women, a great multitude, and all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathura, answered Jeremias, saying,

GreekΚαὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν τῷ Ἱερεμίᾳ πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ γνόντες ὅτι θυμιῶσιν αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν, καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ γυναῖκες, συναγωγὴ μεγάλη, καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς οἱ καθήμενοι ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, ἐν Παθουρῇ, λέγοντες,

ThomsonAt His voice there was in heaven a sound of water, and He brought up clouds from the extremity of the earth. He made the lightning for rain and brought out light from His treasuries.

BrentonAs for the word which thou hast spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken to thee.

GreekὉ λόγος ὃν ἐλάλησας πρὸς ἡμᾶς τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου, οὐκ ἀκούσομέν σου,

ThomsonEvery man by knowledge became stupefied, every melter of gold was put to shame for his graven images; for their molten images were falsehoods, there is no breath in them.

BrentonFor we will surely perform every word that shall proceed out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour drink-offerings to her, as we and our fathers have done, and our kings and princes, in the cities of Juda, and in the streets of Jerusalem: and so we were filled with bread, and were well, and saw no evils.

ThomsonThey are works of vanity and objects of derision. In the time of their visitation they shall perish.

BrentonBut since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, we have all been brought low, and have been consumed by sword and by famine.

GreekΚαὶ ὡς διελίπομεν θυμιῶντες τῇ βασιλίσσῃ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, ἠλαττώθημεν πάντες, καὶ ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ καὶ ἐν λιμῷ ἐξελίπομεν.

ThomsonThe portion of Jacob is not such as these, for He who formed all things is his inheritance: His name is the Lord.

BrentonAnd whereas we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured drink-offerings to her, did we make cakes to her, and pour drink-offerings to her, without our husbands?

GreekΚαὶ ὅτι ἡμεῖς ἐθυμιῶμεν τῇ βασιλίσσῃ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ ἐσπείσαμεν αὐτῇ σπονδὰς, μὴ ἄνευ τῶν ἀνδρῶν ἡμῶν ἐποιήσαμεν αὐτῇ χαυῶνας, καὶ ἐσπείσαμεν αὐτῇ σπονδάς;

Thomson(J) Thou art dispersing for Me implements of war, but in thee I will disperse nations and remove kings out of thee;

BrentonThen Jeremias answered all the people, the mighty men, and the women, and all the people that returned him these words for answer, saying,

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν Ἱερεμίας παντὶ τῷ λαῷ, τοῖς δυνατοῖς καὶ ταῖς γυναιξὶ καὶ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ τοῖς ἀποκριθεῖσιν αὐτῷ λόγους, λέγων,

Thomsonand in thee I will disperse the horse and his rider;

BrentonDid not the Lord remember the incense which ye burned in the cities of Juda, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, and your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land? and came it not into his heart?

Greekοὐχὶ τοῦ θυμιάματος οὗ ἐθυμιάσατε ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν Ἰούδα, καὶ ἔξωθεν Ἱερουσαλὴμ, ὑμεῖς καὶ οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν, καὶ οἱ βασιλεῖς ὑμῶν, καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες ὑμῶν, καὶ ὁ λαὸς τῆς γῆς, ἐμνήσθη Κύριος; καὶ ἀνέβη ἐπὶ τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ;

Thomsonand in thee I will disperse chariots and charioteers; and in thee I will disperse the youth and the virgin; and in thee I will disperse the husband and the wife;

BrentonAnd the Lord could no longer bear you, because of the wickedness of your doings, and because of your abominations which ye wrought; and so your land became a desolation and a waste, and a curse, as at this day;

GreekΚαὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο Κύριος ἔτι φέρειν ἀπὸ προσώπου πονηρίας πραγμάτων ὑμῶν, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν βδελυγμάτων ὑμῶν ὧν ἐποιήσατε· καὶ ἐγενήθη ἡ γῆ ὑμῶν εἰς ἐρήμωσιν, καὶ εἰς ἄβατον, καὶ εἰς ἀρὰν, ὡς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ,

Thomsonand in thee I will disperse the shepherd and the flock; and in thee I will disperse the husbandman and his husbandry; and in thee I will disperse the generals and leaders of armies,

Brentonbecause of your burning incense, and because of the things wherein ye sinned against the Lord: and ye have not hearkened to the voice of the Lord, and have not walked in his ordinances, and in his law, and in his testimonies; and so these evils have come upon you.

Greekἀπὸ προσώπου ὧν ἐθυμιᾶτε, καὶ ὧν ἡμάρτετε τῷ Κύριῳ· καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε τῆς φωνῆς Κυρίου, καὶ ἐν τοῖς προστάγμασιν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐν τῷ νόμῳ καὶ ἐν τοῖς μαρτυρίοις αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐπορεύθητε, καὶ ἐπελάβετο ὑμῶν τὰ κακὰ ταῦτα.

Thomsonand retribute to Babylon and all the Chaldean inhabitants all the evils which they have done to Sion in your sight, saith the Lord.

BrentonAnd Jeremias said to the people, and to the women, Hear ye the word of the Lord.

GreekΚαὶ εἶπεν Ἱερεμίας τῷ λαῷ, καὶ ταῖς γυναιξὶν, ἀκουσατε λόγον Κυρίου.

ThomsonBehold I am against thee, O corrupted mountain which corruptest the whole earth, and I will stretch out My hand against thee and roll thee down on rocks; and I will make thee like a mountain which hath been burned to ashes,

BrentonThus has the Lord God of Israel said; Ye women have spoken with your mouth, and ye fulfilled it with your hands, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour drink-offerings to her: full well did ye keep to your vows, and ye have indeed performed them.

GreekΟὕτως εἶπε Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς Ἰσραὴλ, ὑμεῖς γυναῖκες τῷ στόματι ὑμῶν ἐλαλήσατε, καὶ ταῖς χερσὶν ὑμῶν ἐπληρώσατε, λέγουσαι, ποιοῦσαι ποιήσομεν τὰς ὁμολογίας ἡμῶν ἃς ὡμολογήκαμεν, θυμιᾷν τῇ βασιλίσσῃ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ σπένδειν αὐτῇ σπονδάς· ἐμμείνασαι ἐνεμείνατε ταῖς ὁμολογίαις ὑμῶν, καὶ ποιοῦσαι ἐποιήσατε.

Thomsonso that they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner nor a stone for a foundation. For thou shalt be a desolation for ever, saith the Lord.

BrentonTherefore hear ye the word of the Lord, all Jews dwelling in the land of Egypt; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the Lord, my name shall no longer be in the mouth of every Jew to say, The Lord lives, in all the land of Egypt.

GreekΔιατοῦτο ἀκούσατε λόγον Κυρίου, πᾶς Ἰούδα οἱ καθήμενοι ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, ἰδοὺ ὤμοσα τῷ ὀνόματί μου τῷ μεγάλῳ, εἶπε Κύριος, ἐὰν γένηται ἔτι ὄνομά μου ἐν τῷ στόματι παντὸς Ἰούδα εἰπεῖν, ζῇ Κύριος, ἐπὶ πάση γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ.

ThomsonErect a standard in the land. Sound a trumpet among the nations.

BrentonFor I have watched over them, to hurt them, and not to do them good: and all the Jews dwelling in the land of Egypt shall perish by sword and by famine, until they are utterly consumed.

GreekὍτι ἐγὼ ἐγρήγορα ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς, τοῦ κακῶσαι αὐτοὺς, καὶ οὐκ ἀγαθῶσαι· καὶ ἐκλείψουσι πᾶς Ἰούδα, οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ καὶ ἐν λιμῷ, ἕως ἂν ἐκλείπωσι.

ThomsonPrepare the nations against her. Issue orders against her. Carry them, O kings, from Me even to the Achanazeans. Erect towers against her. Against her bring up cavalry like a multitude of locusts. Against her bring up nations, the king of the Medes and of the whole earth—his generals and all the leaders of his army.

BrentonAnd they that escape the sword shall return to the land of Juda few in number, and the remnant of Juda, who have continued in the land of Egypt to dwell there, shall know whose word shall stand.

GreekΚαὶ οἱ σεσωσμένοι ἀπὸ ῥομφαίας ἐπιστρέψουσιν εἰς γῆν Ἰούδα ὀλίγοι ἀριθμῷ, καὶ γνώσονται οἱ κατάλοιποι Ἰούδα οἱ καταστάντες ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, κατοικῆσαι ἐκεῖ, λόγος τίνος ἐμμενεῖ.

Thomson(p) The earth was in commotion and oppressed with toil, because the determination of the Lord against Babylon had roused it, to make the land of Babylon a desolation and uninhabitable.

BrentonAnd this shall be a sign to you, that I will visit you for evil.

GreekΚαὶ τοῦτο τὸ σημεῖον ὑμῖν, ὅτι ἐπισκέψομαι ἐγὼ ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς εἰς πονηρά.

ThomsonThe warriors of Babylon declined to fight. They will sit still there during a siege. Their mighty power is broken.

BrentonThus said the Lord; Behold, I will give Uaphres king of Egypt into the hands of his enemy, and into the hands of one that seeks his life; as I gave Sedekias king of Juda into the hands of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, his enemy, and who sought his life.

GreekΟὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ δίδωμι τὸν Οὐαφρῆ βασιλέα Αἰγύπτου εἰς χεῖρας ἐχθροῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἰς χεῖρας ζητοῦντος τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ, καθὰ ἔδωκα τὸν Σεδεκίαν βασιλέα Ἰούδα εἰς χεῖρας Ναβουχοδονόσορ βασιλέως Βαβυλῶνος ἐχθροῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ζητοῦντος τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonThey are become like women. Her habitations are burned with fire. Her bars are broken. Courier will run to meet courier, and messenger to meet messenger, to tell the king of Babylon that his city is taken—

BrentonThe Word which Jeremias the Prophet spoke to Baruch son of Nerias, when he wrote these words in the book from the mouth of Jeremias, in the fourth year of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda.

GreekὉ ΛΟΓΟΣ ὋΝ ἘΛΑΛΗΣΕΝ ἹΕΡΕΜΙΑΣ Ὁ ΠΡΟΦΗΤΗΣ πρὸς Βαροὺχ υἱὸν Νηρίου, ὅτε ἔγραφε τοὺς λόγους τούτους ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ ἀπὸ στόματος Ἱερεμίου, ἐν τῷ ἐνιαυτῷ τῷ τετάρτῳ Ἰωακεὶμ υἱῷ Ἰωσία βασιλέως Ἰούδα.

Thomsonthat the passages one after another are forced—that the barriers are burned with fire and his warriors are fleeing.

BrentonThus has the Lord said to thee, O Baruch.

GreekΟὕτως εἶπε Κύριος ἐπὶ σοὶ Βαροὺχ,

ThomsonFor thus said the Lord: The houses of the king of Babylon shall be threshed like a floor full of ripe grain. Yet a little while and her harvest will come.

BrentonWhereas thou hast said, Alas! alas! for the Lord has laid a grievous trouble upon me; I lay down in groaning, I found no rest;

Greekὅτι εἶπας, οἴμοι οἴμοι, ὅτι προσέθηκε Κύριος κόπον ἐπίπονόν μοι, ἐκοιμήθην ἐν στεναγμοῖς, ἀνάπαυσιν οὐχ εὗρον·

ThomsonShe devoured me*; she chewed me to pieces: thick darkness overwhelmed me. Nabuchodonosar king of Babylon swallowed me down; like a dragon he filled his belly with my dainties. They have cast me up.

Brentonsay thou to him, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I pull down those whom I have built up, and I pluck up those whom I have planted.

GreekΕἰπὸν αὐτῷ, οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, ἰδοὺ οὓς ἐγὼ ᾠκοδόμησα, ἐγὼ καθαιρῶ· καὶ οὓς ἐγὼ ἐφύτευσα, ἐγὼ ἐκτίλλω.

Thomson(p) Let the inhabitants of Sion say, My troubles and my miseries be upon Babylon! and let Jerusalem say, My blood be upon the Chaldean inhabitants!

BrentonAnd wilt thou seek great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I bring evil upon all flesh, saith the Lord: but I will give to thee thy life for a spoil in every place whither thou shalt go.
