BrentonAnd Elius further continued, and said,
GreekΠροσθεὶς δὲ ἔτι Ἐλιοὺς, λέγει,

ThomsonBear with me a little longer that I may teach thee: for I have still something further to say;
BrentonWait for me yet a little while, that I may teach thee: for there is yet speech in me.
GreekΜεῖνόν με μικρὸν ἔτι, ἵνα διδάξω σε· ἔτι γὰρ ἐν ἐμοί ἐστι λέξις.

Thomsontaking my knowledge from abroad and from my own works,
BrentonHaving fetched my knowledge from afar, and according to my works,
GreekἈναλαβὼν τὴν ἐπιστήμην μου μακράν, ἔργοις δέ μου δίκαια ἐρῶ ἐπʼ ἀληθείας,

ThomsonI will speak righteous things with truth, without considering in an unjust manner things which are unjust.
BrentonI will speak just things truly, and thou shalt not unjustly receive unjust words.
Greekκαὶ οὐκ ἄδικα ῥήματα ἀδίκως συνιεῖς.

ThomsonKnow then that the Lord, who is mighty in power and wisdom;
BrentonBut know that the Lord will not cast off an innocent man: being mighty in strength of wisdom,
GreekΓίνωσκε δὲ, ὅτι ὁ Κύριος οὐ μὴ ἀποποιήσηται τὸν ἄκακον, δυνατὸς ἰσχύϊ καρδίας

Thomsonwill not reject the innocent, nor save the wicked: and that He will administer justice to the oppressed.
Brentonhe will not by any means save alive the ungodly: and he will grant the judgment of the poor.
Greekἀσεβῆ οὐ μὴ ζωοποιήσῃ, καὶ κρίμα πτωχῶν δώσει.

ThomsonHe will not withdraw His eyes from the righteous, but will seat them at last with kings on a throne and they shall be exalted.
BrentonHe will not turn away his eyes from the righteous, but they shall be with kings on the throne: and he will establish them in triumph, and they shall be exalted.
GreekΟὐκ ἀφελεῖ ἀπὸ δικαίου ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ μετὰ βασιλέων εἰς θρόνον, καὶ καθιεῖ αὐτοὺς εἰς νῖκος, καὶ ὑψωθήσονται.

ThomsonWhen they shall be bound with fetters or held with cords of affliction,
BrentonBut they that are bound in fetters shall be holden in cords of poverty.
GreekΚαὶ οἱ πεπεδημένοι ἐν χειροπέδαις, συσχεθήσονται ἐν σχοινίοις πενίας.

ThomsonHe will shew them their works and their transgressions, that they bear.
BrentonAnd he shall recount to them their works, and their transgressions, for such will act with violence.
GreekΚαὶ ἀναγγελεῖ αὐτοῖς τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν, καὶ τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν, ὅτι ἰσχύσουσιν.

ThomsonBut He will hearken to what is just, and hath ordered them to turn from iniquity.
BrentonBut he will hearken to the righteous: and he has said that they shall turn from unrighteousness.
GreekἈλλὰ τοῦ δικαίου εἰσακούσεται· καὶ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐπιστραφήσονται ἐξ ἀδικίας.

ThomsonIf they hearken and serve; they shall end their days in prosperity and their years in the enjoyment of things convenient.
BrentonIf they should hear and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in honour.
GreekἘὰν ἀκούσωσι, καὶ δουλεύσωσι, συντελέσουσι τὰς ἡμέρας αὐτῶν ἐν ἀγαθοῖς, καὶ τὰ ἔτη αὐτῶν ἐν εὐπρεπείαις.

ThomsonBut the impious He saveth not: because they would not know the Lord, and because, when they were admonished, they were disobedient,
BrentonBut he preserves not the ungodly; because they are not willing to know the Lord, and because when reproved they were disobedient.
GreekἈσεβεῖς δὲ οὐ διασώζει, παρὰ τὸ μὴ βούλεσθαι αὐτοὺς εἰδέναι τὸν Κύριον, καὶ διότι νουθετούμενοι ἀνήκοοι ἦσαν.

Thomsonthe hypocrites in heart shall incur wrath: they will not cry because He bound them:
BrentonAnd the hypocrites in heart will array wrath against themselves; they will not cry, because he has bound them.
GreekΚαὶ ὑποκριταὶ καρδίᾳ τάξουσι θυμόν, οὐ βοήσονται, ὅτι ἔδησεν αὐτούς.

ThomsonLet their soul therefore perish in youth and their life be wounded by angels.
BrentonTherefore let their soul die in youth, and their life be wounded by messengers of death.
GreekἈποθάνοι τοίνυν ἐν νεότητι ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτῶν, ἡ δὲ ζωὴ αὐτῶν τιτρωσκομένη ὑπὸ ἀγγέλων,

ThomsonBecause they afflicted the weak and feeble, He will support the cause of the meek.
BrentonBecause they afflicted the weak and helpless: and he will vindicate the judgment of the meek.
Greekἀνθʼ ὧν ἔθλιψαν ἀσθενῆ καὶ ἀδύνατον, κρίμα δὲ πραέων ἐκθήσει.

ThomsonThough the abyss from the mouth of an enemy,
BrentonAnd he has also enticed thee out of the mouth of the enemy:
GreekΚαὶ προσεπιηπάτησέ σε ἐκ στόματος ἐχθροῦ, ἄβυσσος κατάχυσις ὑποκάτω αὐτῆς, καὶ κατέβη τράπεζά σου πλήρης πιότητος.

Thomsonthe overflow of that from underneath, hath deceived thee; and thy table which was full of fatness hath fallen: yet the cause of the righteous shall not fail.
Brentonthere is a deep gulf and a rushing stream beneath it, and thy table came down full of fatness. Judgment shall not fail from the righteous;
GreekΟὐχ ὑστερήσει δὲ ἀπὸ δικαίων κρίμα,

ThomsonBut there shall be wrath against the ungodly, on account of the wicked bribes which they received for injustice.
Brentonbut there shall be wrath upon the ungodly, by reason of the ungodliness of the bribes which they received for iniquities.
Greekθυμὸς δὲ ἐπʼ ἀσεβεῖς ἔσται, διʼ ἀσέβειαν δώρων ὧν ἐδέχοντο ἐπʼ ἀδικίαις.

ThomsonLet not the earnest entreaty of the weak in distress turn aside thee and all those in the exercise of authority.
BrentonLet not thy mind willingly turn thee aside from the petition of the feeble that are in distress.
GreekΜή σε ἐκκλινάτω ἑκὼν ὁ νοῦς δεήσεως ἐν ἀνάγκῃ ὄντων ἀδυνάτων,

ThomsonDo not spin out the night that crowds may come to their assistance.
BrentonAnd draw not forth all the mighty men by night, so that the people should go up instead of them.
Greekκαὶ πάντας τοὺς κραταιοῦντας ἰσχὺν μὴ ἐξελκύσῃς τὴν νύκτα, τοῦ ἀναβῆναι λαοὺς ἀντʼ αὐτῶν,

ThomsonBut be careful not to do improper things: for by such a conduct thou wilt extricate thyself from distress.
BrentonBut take heed lest thou do that which is wrong: for of this thou hast made choice because of poverty.
Greekἀλλὰ φύλαξαι μὴ πράξῃς ἄτοκα· ἐπὶ τοὺτων γὰρ ἐξείλω ἀπὸ πτωχείας.

ThomsonBehold the Almighty will strengthen with His strength: for who is powerful as He? Or who can examine His works?
BrentonBehold, the Mighty One shall prevail by his strength: for who is powerful as he is?
GreekἸδοὺ ὁ ἰσχυρὸς κραταιώσει ἐν ἰσχύι αὐτοῦ· τίς γάρ ἐστι κατʼ αὐτὸν δυνάστης;

ThomsonOr who can say, He hath done unjust things?
BrentonAnd who is he that examines his works? or who can say, He has wrought injustice?
GreekΤίς δέ ἐστιν ὁ ἐτάζων αὐτοῦ τὰ ἔργα; ἢ τίς ὁ εἰπὼν, ἔπραξεν ἄδικα;

ThomsonRemember that His works are greater than what men have attempted.
BrentonRemember that his works are great beyond those which men have attempted.
GreekΜνήσθητι, ὅτι μεγάλα ἐστὶν αὐτοῦ τὰ ἔργα, ὧν ἦρξαν ἄνδρες.

ThomsonEvery man hath seen by himself how many mortals were wounded.
BrentonEvery man has seen in himself, how many mortals are wounded.
GreekΠᾶς ἄνθρωπος εἶδεν ἐν ἑαυτῷ, ὅσοι τιτρωσκόμενοί εἰσι βροτοί.

ThomsonBehold the Almighty is multifarious in operations beyond our comprehension. The number of His years are indeed infinite
BrentonBehold, the Mighty One is great, and we shall not know him: the number of his years is even infinite.
GreekἸδοὺ ὁ ἰσχυρὸς πολύς, καὶ οὐ γνωσόμεθα· ἀριθμὸς ἐτῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέραντος.

Thomsonand by Him the particles of rain can be counted.
BrentonAnd the drops of rain are numbered by him, and shall be poured out in rain to form a cloud.
GreekἈριθμηταὶ δὲ αὐτῷ σταγόνες ὑετοῦ, καὶ ἐπιχυθήσονται ὑετῷ εἰς νεφέλην.

ThomsonWhen they are collected into a cloud for rain, the heavens will pour down. But when the clouds cast a shade over the dumb creation He impressed a care on beasts, and they know the order for going to bed.
BrentonThe ancient heavens shall flow, and the clouds overshadow innumerable mortals:
GreekῬυήσονται παλαιώματα, ἐσκίασε δὲ νέφη ἐπὶ ἀμυθήτῳ βροτῷ·

Brentonhe has fixed a time to cattle, and they know the order of rest.
Greekὥραν ἔθετο κτήνεσιν, οἴδασι δὲ κοίτης τάξιν·

BrentonYet by all these things thy understanding is not astonished, neither is thy mind disturbed in thy body.
Greekἐπὶ τούτοις πᾶσιν οὐκ ἐξίσταταί σου ἡ διάνοια, οὐδὲ διαλλάσσεταί σου ἡ καρδία ἀπὸ σώματος.

ThomsonAt all these things is not thine understanding confounded? And is not thy heart starting from the body? Now though the outspread cloud be rushing together, to the whole extent of its pavilion,
BrentonAnd though one should understand the outspreadings of the clouds, or the measure of his tabernacle;
GreekΚαὶ ἐὰν συνῇ ἐπεκτάσεις νεφέλης, ἰσότητα σκηνῆς αὐτοῦ,

Thomsonbehold! with a clap of thunder He will expand it over it. He hath indeed covered the out-branchings of the sea!
Brentonbehold he will stretch his bow against him, and he covers the bottom of the sea.
Greekἰδοὺ ἐκτενεῖ ἐπʼ αὐτὸν ἠδὼ, καὶ ῥιζώματα τῆς θαλάσσης ἐκάλυψεν.

ThomsonFor with what He judgeth nations He can give food in abundance.
BrentonFor by them he will judge the nations: he will give food to him that has strength.
GreekἘν γὰρ αὐτοῖς κρινεῖ λαούς, δώσει τροφὴν τῷ ἰσχύοντι.

ThomsonWhen with His hands He hath covered the light, and hath given provisional orders concerning food;
BrentonHe has hidden the light in his hands, and given charge concerning it to the interposing cloud.
GreekἘπὶ χειρῶν ἐκάλυψε φῶς, καὶ ἐνετείλατο περὶ αὐτῆς ἐν ἀπαντῶντι.

Thomsonthe Lord will warn His friend that there is a portion also for injustice.
BrentonThe Lord will declare concerning this to his friend: but there is a portion also for unrighteousness.
GreekἈναγγελεῖ περὶ αὐτοῦ φίλον αὐτοῦ Κύριος, κτῆσι καὶ περὶ ἀδικίας.
