1
ThomsonNOW Joshua, son of Naue, had sent from Sattin two young men to spy, saying, Go up, and take a view of the land, and particularly of Jericho. And the two young men, having set out, entered Jericho, and went to the house of a harlot, whose name was Rahab, and lodged there.
BrentonAnd Joshua the son of Naue sent out of Sattin two young men to spy the land, saying, Go up and view the land and Jericho: and the two young men went and entered into Jericho; and they entered into the house of a harlot, whose name was Raab, and lodged there.
2
ThomsonAnd news being carried to the king of Jericho, saying, Some men of the children of Israel are come here to spy the land,
BrentonAnd it was reported to the king of Jericho, saying, Men of the sons of Israel have come in hither to spy the land.
3
Thomsonthe king of Jericho sent a message to Rahab, saying, Bring out the men, who came to thy house tonight; for they are come to spy the land.
BrentonAnd the king of Jericho sent and spoke to Raab, saying, Bring out the men that entered into thine house this night; for they are come to spy out the land.
4
ThomsonNow the woman had taken the two men, and hid them: so she spoke to the messengers, saying, The men came to me;
BrentonAnd the woman took the two men and hid them; and she spoke to the messengers, saying, The men came in to me,
5
Thomsonbut at dark, when the gate was shutting, the men went out, and I do not know where they are gone. Pursue them, perhaps you may overtake them.
Brentonbut when the gate was shut in the evening, the men went out; I know not whither they are gone: follow after them, if ye may overtake them.
6
ThomsonNow she had taken them up to the top of the house, and concealed them under flax, which was piled up for her on the top of the house. And the men pursued them by the way to the Jordan, to the fords, and the gate was shut.
BrentonBut she had brought them up upon the house, and hid them in the flax-stalks that were spread by her on the house.
7
ThomsonSo when the pursuers were gone after them, she went up to the men, on the top of the house,
BrentonAnd the men followed after them in the way to Jordan to the fords; and the gate was shut.
8
Thomsonbefore they had gone to sleep,
BrentonAnd it came to pass when the men who pursued after them were gone forth, and before the spies had lain down to sleep, that she came up to them on the top of the house;
9
Thomsonand said to them, I know that the Lord hath given you this land; for the dread of you is fallen upon us:
Brentonand she said to them, I know that the Lord has given you the land; for the fear of you has fallen upon us.
10
Thomsonfor we have heard that the Lord God dried up the Red Sea on your account, when you came out of Egypt, and all that he hath done to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the borders of the Jordan, to Seon and Og, whom you have utterly destroyed:
BrentonFor we have heard that the Lord God dried up the Red Sea before you, when ye came out of the land of Egypt, and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond Jordan, to Seon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
11
Thomsonand, upon hearing these things, we became fainthearted, and there was no spirit in any of us because of you. Since, then, the Lord your God is God in heaven above, and in the earth beneath,
BrentonAnd when we heard it we were amazed in our heart, and there was no longer any spirit in any of us because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above, and on the earth beneath.
12
Thomsonswear now to me by the Lord your God, because I shew mercy to you, that you will shew mercy to my father’s house;
BrentonAnd now swear to me by the Lord God; since I deal mercifully with you, so do ye also deal mercifully with the house of my father:
13
Thomsonand that you will save alive my father’s household, my mother, and my brothers, and all my family, and all that belong to them, and that you will deliver my soul from death.
Brentonand save alive the house of my father, my mother, and my brethren, and all my house, and all that they have, and ye shall rescue my soul from death.
14
ThomsonAnd the men said to her, Our life for yours even to death. Then she said to them: When the Lord delivereth up to you this city, you will deal mercifully and truly with me.
BrentonAnd the men said to her, Our life for yours even to death: and she said, When the Lord shall have delivered the city to you, ye shall deal mercifully and truly with me.
15
ThomsonSo she lowered them down through a window.
BrentonAnd she let them down by the window;
16
ThomsonNow she said to them, Flee to the mountains, lest the pursuers meet you, and hide yourself there three days, until they who are in pursuit of you have returned, and afterwards you may go your way.
Brentonand she said to them, Depart into the hill-country, lest the pursuers meet you, and ye shall be hidden there three days until your pursuers return from after you, and afterwards ye shall depart on your way.
17
ThomsonAnd the men said to her, We are sincere in the oath which we have sworn to thee.
BrentonAnd the men said to her, We are clear of this thy oath.
18
ThomsonBehold when we enter any part of the city, thou shalt put up this signal—Thou shalt tie this scarlet rope to the window, through which thou shalt have let us down; and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brothers, and all thy father’s household, home to thy house.
BrentonBehold, we shall enter into a part of the city, and thou shalt set a sign; thou shalt bind this scarlet cord in the window, by which thou hast let us down, and thou shalt bring in to thyself, into thy house, thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all the family of thy father.
19
ThomsonAnd it shall be that whoever goeth out of the door of thy house, into the street, shall incur the guilt of his own death, and we shall be clear of blame in regard to this oath which we have sworn to thee. But for all who are with thee in the house we will be answerable.
BrentonAnd it shall come to pass that whosoever shall go outside the door of thy house, his guilt shall be upon him, and we shall be quit of this thine oath; and we will be responsible for all that shall be found with thee in thy house.
20
ThomsonBut if any one injure us, or if thou disclose these our terms, we shall be clear of this oath to thee.
BrentonBut if any one should injure us, or betray these our matters, we shall be quit of this thine oath.
21
ThomsonAnd she said to them, Let it be as you say.
BrentonAnd she said to them, Let it be according to your word; and she sent them out, and they departed.
22
ThomsonSo she dismissed them, and they went away, and came to the hilly country, and stayed there three days. And the pursuers examined all the roads, but did not find them.
BrentonAnd they came to the hill-country, and remained there three days; and the pursuers searched all the roads, and found them not.
23
ThomsonThen the two young men turned, and came down from the mountain, and crossed over to Joshua, son of Naue, and told him all that had happened to them.
BrentonAnd the two young men returned, and came down out of the mountain; and they went over to Joshua the son of Naue, and told him all things that had happened to them.
24
ThomsonAnd they said to him, Because the Lord hath delivered up all that land into our hands, therefore all the inhabitants of the land are in the utmost consternation because of us.
BrentonAnd they said to Joshua, The Lord has delivered all the land into our power, and all the inhabitants of that land tremble because of us.
