ThomsonAND the children of Israel again proceeded to do evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines, forty years.

BrentonAnd the children of Israel yet again committed iniquity before the Lord; and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Phylistines forty years.

ThomsonNow there was a man of Saraa, a community of the Danites, whose name was Manoe; and his wife was barren, and never had a child.

ThomsonAnd the woman went, and told her husband, saying, There came to me a man of God, and his visage was like that of an angel of God, very awful, so that I did not ask him whence he was, nor did he tell me his name.

BrentonAnd the woman went in, and spoke to her husband, saying, A man of God came to me, and his appearance was as of an angel of God, very dreadful; and I did not ask him whence he was, and he did not tell me his name.

ThomsonWhereupon Manoe prayed to the Lord, and said, O Lord Adonaie! grant me that the man of God, whom thou didst send, may come to us again, and instruct us what we shall do to the child which is to be born.

BrentonAnd Manoë prayed to the Lord and said, I pray thee, O Lord my Lord, concerning the man of God whom thou sentest; let him now come to us once more, and teach us what we shall do to the child about to be born.

GreekΚαὶ προσηύξατο Μανωὲ πρὸς Κύριον, καὶ εἶπεν, ἐν ἐμοὶ Κύριε ἀδωναϊὲ τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦ Θεοῦ ὃν ἀπέστειλας· ἐλθέτω δὴ ἔτι πρὸς ἡμᾶς, καὶ συμβιβασάτω ἡμᾶς τί ποιήσωμεν τῷ παιδίῳ τῷ τικτομένῳ.

ThomsonAnd God hearkened to the voice of Manoe, and the angel of God came again to the woman. Now she was sitting in the field, and Manoe her husband was not with her.

BrentonAnd the Lord heard the voice of Manoë, and the angel of God came yet again to the woman; and she sat in the field, and Manoë her husband was not with her.

GreekΚαὶ εἰσήκουσεν ὁ Θεὸς τῆς φωνῆς Μανωὲ, καὶ ἦλθεν ὁ ἄγγελος τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔτι πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα· καὶ αὕτη ἐκάθητο ἐν ἀγρῷ, καὶ Μανωὲ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς οὐκ ἦν μετʼ αὐτῆς.

ThomsonUpon which Manoe arose, and went with his wife, and when he came to the man, he said to him, Art thou the man who spoke to my wife? And the angel said, I am.

ThomsonThen Manoe said, Now the thing will come to pass. How is the child to be educated, and what is he to do?

BrentonAnd Manoë said, Now shall thy word come to pass: what shall be the ordering of the child, and our dealings with him?

ThomsonAnd the angel of the Lord said to Manoe, He must abstain from all the things which I mentioned to this woman.

BrentonAnd the angel of the Lord said to Manoë, Of all things concerning which I spoke to the woman, she shall beware.

ThomsonHe must eat nothing which proceedeth from the vine, nor drink wine, nor any fermented liquor, nor eat anything which is unclean. He must observe all that I have commanded her.

BrentonShe shall eat of nothing that comes of the vine yielding wine, and let her not drink wine or strong liquor, and let her not eat anything unclean: all things that I have charged her she shall observe.

ThomsonAnd the angel of the Lord said to Manoe, Though thou detain me I cannot eat of thy victuals; but if thou wouldst offer a whole burnt offering, offer it to the Lord.

BrentonAnd the angel of the Lord said to Manoë, If thou shouldest detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wouldest offer a whole-burnt-offering, to the Lord thou shalt offer it: for Manoë knew not that he was an angel of the Lord.

ThomsonBecause Manoe did not know that he was an angel of the Lord, therefore Manoe said to him, What is thy name, that when thy word cometh to pass we may honour thee?

BrentonAnd Manoë said to the angel of the Lord, What is thy name, that when thy word shall come to pass, we may glorify thee?

GreekΚαὶ εἶπε Μανωὲ πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον Κυρίου, τί τὸ ὄνομά σοι, ὅτι ἔλθοι τὸ ῥῆμά σου, καὶ δοξάσομέν σε;

ThomsonAnd the angel of the Lord said to Manoe, Why askest thou my name? It is indeed Wonderful.

BrentonAnd the angel of the Lord said to him, Why dost thou thus ask after my name; whereas it is wonderful?

ThomsonThen Manoe took the kid of the goats, with the sacrifice of flour, and carried them up upon the rock for the Lord. And he went apart to offer the sacrifice, while Manoe and his wife were looking on.

BrentonAnd Manoë took a kid of the goats and its meat-offering, and offered it on the rock to the Lord; and the angel wrought a distinct work, and Manoë and his wife were looking on.

GreekΚαὶ ἔλαβε Μανωὲ τὸν ἔριφον τῶν αἰγῶν καὶ τὴν θυσίαν, καὶ ἀνήνεγκεν ἐπὶ τὴν πέτραν τῷ Κυρίῳ· καὶ διεχώρισε ποιῆσαι, καὶ Μανωὲ καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ βλέποντες.

ThomsonAnd when the flame ascended above the altar, up towards heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame. When Manoe and his wife saw this, they fell flat with their face to the ground.

BrentonAnd it came to pass when the flame went up above the altar toward heaven, that the angel of the Lord went up in the flame; and Manoë and his wife were looking, and they fell upon their face to the earth.

GreekΚαὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἀναβῆναι τὴν φλόγα ἐπάνω τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου ἕως τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ ἀνέβη ὁ ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἐν τῇ φλογί. καὶ Μανωὲ καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ βλέποντες, καὶ ἔπεσον ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.

ThomsonAnd as the angel of the Lord no more appeared to Manoe and his wife, Manoe then knew that he was an angel of the Lord;

BrentonAnd the angel appeared no more to Manoë and to his wife: then Manoë knew that this was an angel of the Lord.

ThomsonBut his wife said to him, Had it been the will of the Lord to cause us to die, He would not have received at our hand a whole burnt offering, and a sacrifice; nor would He have shewed us all these things; nor would He, as on this occasion, have caused us to hear these things.

BrentonBut his wife said to him, If the Lord were pleased to slay us, he would not have received of our hand a whole-burnt-offering and a meat-offering; and he would not have shewn us all these things, neither would he have caused us to hear all these things as at this time.
