ThomsonHow solitary sitteth the city which was full of people! she who was abundant among nations is become like a widow! the empress of provinces is become tributary!
BrentonAleph. How does the city that was filled with people sit solitary! she is become as a widow: she that was magnified among the nations, and princess among the provinces, has become tributary.
GreekΑΛΕΦ. Πῶς ἐκάθισε μόνη ἡ πόλις ἡ πεπληθυμμένη λαῶν; ἐγενήθη ὡς χήρα, πεπληθυμμένη ἐν ἔθνεσιν, ἄρχουσα ἐν χώραις ἐγενήθη εἰς φόρον.

ThomsonShe wept sore by night and her tears are on her cheeks: and of all her lovers there is none to comfort her. All her friends dealt treacherously with her. They became her enemies.
BrentonBeth. She weeps sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; and there is none of all her lovers to comfort her: all that were her friends have dealt deceitfully with her, they are become her enemies.

ThomsonJudea is forced to emigrate. On account of her humiliation and because of her great servitude, she sat down among the nations; she found no rest. All her persecutors found her among them who were afflicting her.
BrentonGimel. Judea is gone into captivity by reason of her affliction, and by reason of the abundance of her servitude: she dwells among the nations, she has not found rest: all her pursuers have overtaken her between her oppressors.
GreekΓΙΜΕΛ. Μετῳκίσθη Ἰουδαία ἀπὸ ταπεινώσεως αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀπὸ πλήθους δουλείας αὐτῆς· ἐκάθισεν ἐν ἔθνεσιν, οὐχ εὗρεν ἀνάπαυσιν· πάντες οἱ καταδιώκοντες αὐτὴν, κατέλαβον αὐτὴν ἀναμέσον τῶν θλιβόντων.

ThomsonThe highways of Sion mourn because none attend her festivals. All her gates are desolate. Her priests groan bitterly. Her virgins are carried away; and she is by herself in bitterness.
BrentonDaleth. The ways of Sion mourn, because there are none that come to the feast: all her gates are ruined: her priests groan, her virgins are led captive, and she is in bitterness in herself.

ThomsonThey who afflict her are become her head; and her enemies prosper. Because the Lord hath humbled her for the multitude of her transgressions, her children are gone into captivity before the oppressor.
BrentonHe. Her oppressors are become the head, and her enemies have prospered; for the Lord has afflicted her because of the multitude of her sins: her young children are gone into captivity before the face of the oppressor.

ThomsonFrom the daughter of Sion all her comeliness is taken away. Her chiefs were like rams which could find no pasture; and they came without strength in view of the pursuer.
BrentonVau. And all her beauty has been taken away from the daughter of Sion: her princes were as rams finding no pasture, and are gone away in weakness before the face of the pursuer.
GreekΟΥΑΥ. Καὶ ἐξῄρθη ἐκ θυγατρὸς Σιὼν πᾶσα ἡ εὐπρέπεια αὐτῆς· ἐγένοντο οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτῆς ὡς κριοὶ οὐχ εὑρίσκοντες νομὴν, καὶ ἐπορεύοντο ἐν οὐκ ἰσχύϊ κατὰ πρόσωπον διώκοντος.

ThomsonIn the days of her humiliation and rejection, Jerusalem remembered all the good things which she had in days of old. When her people fell into the hands of the oppressor, and there was none to help her; her enemies seeing this, laughed at her festivals held in commemoration of her settlement.
BrentonZain. Jerusalem remembered the days of her affliction, and her rejection; she thought on all her desirable things which were from the days of old, when her people fell into the hands of the oppressor, and there was none to help her: when her enemies saw it they laughed at her habitation.
GreekΖΑΙΝ. Ἐμνήσθη Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἡμερῶν ταπεινώσεως αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀπωσμῶν αὐτῆς· πάντα τὰ ἐπιθυμήματα αὐτῆς ὅσα ἦν ἐξ ἡμερῶν ἀρχαίων, ἐν τῷ πεσεῖν τὸν λαὸν αὐτῆς εἰς χεῖρας θλίβοντος, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ βοηθῶν αὐτῇ. ἰδόντες οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῆς, ἐγέλασαν ἐπὶ κατοικεσίᾳ αὐτῆς.

ThomsonJerusalem sinned grievously, therefore she became unstable as a wave. By all that honoured her she hath been humbled, for they saw her nakedness, while she sighing turned away her face.
BrentonHeth. Jerusalem has sinned a great sin; therefore has she come into tribulation, all that used to honour her have afflicted her, for they have seen her shame: yea, she herself groaned, and turned backward.
GreekΗΘ. Ἁμαρτίαν ἥμαρτεν Ἱερουσαλὴμ, διατοῦτο εἰς σάλον ἐγένετο· πάντες οἱ δοξάζοντες αὐτὴν, ἐταπείνωσαν αὐτήν· εἶδον γὰρ τὴν ἀσχημοσύνην αὐτῆς, καί γε αὐτὴ στενάζουσα καὶ ἀπεστράφη ὀπίσω.

ThomsonHer uncleanness was before her feet. She was insensible to her extreme distress. He hath indeed lowered her haughtiness; there is none who comforteth her. O Lord, behold my affliction because the enemy is magnified.
BrentonTeth. Her uncleanness is before her feet; she remembered not her last end; she has lowered her boasting tone, there is none to comfort her. Behold, O Lord, my affliction: for the enemy has magnified himself.
GreekΤΗΘ. Ἀκαθαρσία αὐτῆς πρὸ ποδῶν αὐτῆς· οὐκ ἐμνήσθη ἔσχατα αὐτῆς, καὶ κατεβίβασεν ὑπέρογκα· οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ παρακαλῶν αὐτήν. ἴδε Κύριε τὴν ταπείνωσίν μου, ὅτι ἐμεγαλύνθη ὁ ἐχθρός.

ThomsonOn all the objects of her desire the oppressor hath laid his hand; for into her sanctuary she saw nations entering, concerning whom Thou hast commanded that they should not come into Thy congregation.
BrentonJod. The oppressor has stretched out his hand on all her desirable things: for she has seen the Gentiles entering into her sanctuary, concerning whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation.
GreekΙΩΔ. Χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐξεπέτασε θλίβων ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ ἐπιθυμήματα αὐτῆς· εἶδε γὰρ ἔθνη εἰσελθόντα εἰς τὸ ἁγίασμα αὐτῆς, ἃ ἐνετείλω μὴ εἰσελθεῖν αὐτὰ εἰς ἐκκλησίαν σου.

ThomsonAll her people were sighing deeply, seeking bread. They gave up the objects of her desire, for meat to preserve life. Look down, O Lord, and see how she is dishonoured.
BrentonChaph. All her people groan, seeking bread: they have given their desirable things for meat, to restore their soul: behold, Lord, and look; for she is become dishonoured.
GreekΧΑΦ. Πᾶς ὁ λαὸς αὐτῆς καταστενάζοντες, ζητοῦντες ἄρτον· ἔδωκαν τὰ ἐπιθυμήματα αὐτῆς ἐν βρώσει, τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι ψυχήν· ἴδε Κύριε καὶ ἐπίβλεψον, ὅτι ἐγενήθη ἠτιμωμένη.

ThomsonHo! all ye who travel the way turn and see! is there any sorrow like this of mine, which He hath denounced against me. The Lord hath humbled me in the day of His fierce indignation.
BrentonLamed. All ye that pass by the way, turn, and see if there is sorrow like to my sorrow, which has happened to me. The Lord who spoke by me has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.
GreekΛΑΜΕΔ. Οἱ πρὸς ὑμᾶς πάντες παραπορευόμενοι ὁδὸν, ἐπιστρέψατε καὶ ἴδετε εἰ ἔστιν ἄλγος κατὰ τὸ ἄλγος μου, ὃ ἐγενήθη· φθεγξάμενος ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐταπείνωσέ με Κύριος ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὀργῆς θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ.

ThomsonFrom His loftiness he hath sent a fire; He brought it in among my bones. He hath spread a net for my feet and turned me backwards. He hath made me desolate and full of sorrow, all the live-long day.
BrentonMem. He has sent fire from his lofty habitation, he has brought it into my bones: he has spread a net for my feet, he has turned me back: he has made me desolate and mourning all the day.

ThomsonHe hath kept a watch on my transgressions. They are wreathed round my hands. They have reached up to my neck. My strength is enfeebled. For into my hands the Lord hath sent pains. I cannot stand.
BrentonNun. He has watched over my sins, they are twined about my hands, they have come up on my neck: my strength has failed; for the Lord has laid pains on my hands, I shall not be able to stand.
GreekΝΟΥΝ. Ἐγρηγορήθη ἐπὶ τὰ ἀσεβήματά μου, ἐν χερσί μου συνεπλάκησαν· ἀνέβησαν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλόν μου· ἠσθένησεν ἡ ἰσχύς μου· ὅτι ἔδωκε Κύριος ἐν χερσί μου ὀδύνας, οὐ δυνήσομαι στῆναι.

ThomsonFrom amidst me the Lord hath moved all my mighty men. He hath brought upon me the time for crushing my chosen bands. The Lord trod out a vat for the virgin daughter of Juda.
BrentonSamech. The Lord has cut off all my strong men from the midst of me: he has summoned against me a time for crushing my choice men: the Lord has trodden a wine-press for the virgin daughter of Juda: for these things I weep.
GreekΣΑΜΕΧ. Ἐξῇρε πάντας τοὺς ἰσχυρούς μου ὁ Κύριος ἐκ μέσου μου, ἐκάλεσεν ἐπʼ ἐμὲ καιρὸν τοῦ συντρίψαι ἐκλεκτούς μου· ληνὸν ἐπάτησε Κύριος παρθένῳ θυγατρὶ Ἰούδα· ἐπὶ τούτοις ἐγὼ κλαίω.

ThomsonFor these things I mourn. Mine eye hath flowed with water because my comforter, He who is the supporter of my life, is far removed from me. My children are vanished because the enemy hath prevailed.
BrentonAin. Mine eye has poured out water, because he that should comfort me, that should restore my soul, has been removed far from me: my sons have been destroyed, because the enemy has prevailed.

ThomsonSion stretched forth her hand; there is none to comfort her. The Lord gave a command respecting Jacob; around him are they who afflict him. Jerusalem became among them like one set apart as unclean.
BrentonPhe. Sion has spread out her hand, and there is none to comfort her: the Lord has commanded concerning Jacob, his oppressors are round about him: Jerusalem has become among them as a removed woman.

ThomsonThe Lord is righteous; for against His express commandment I rebelled. Hear I beseech you all ye peoples and behold my sorrow! my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.

ThomsonLook, O Lord! because of my distress my bowels are troubled; and my heart within me is distracted, because I have grievously rebelled. Abroad the sword, and at home death have bereaved me of children.
BrentonRhechs. Behold, O Lord; for I am afflicted: my belly is troubled, and my heart is turned within me; for I have been grievously rebellious: abroad the sword has bereaved me, even as death at home.
GreekΡΗΧΣ. Ἴδε, Κύριε, ὅτι θλίβομαι, ἡ κοιλία μου ἐταράχθη, καὶ ἡ καρδία μου ἐστράφη ἐν ἐμοὶ, ὅτι παραπικραίνουσα παρεπικράνθην, ἔξωθεν ἠτέκνωσέ με μάχαιρα, ὥσπερ θάνατος ἐν οἴκῳ.

ThomsonHear, I beseech thee! because I groan; there is none to comfort me. All mine enemies heard of my calamities, and rejoiced at what thou hast done. Thou hast brought on a day, Thou hast proclaimed a time. They were like me,

Thomsonlet all their wickedness come before Thee. Make search for them as they have made search for all my transgressions. For my groans are many, and my heart is afflicted with grief.
BrentonThau. Let all their wickedness come before thy face; and strip them, as they have made a gleaning for all my sins: for my groans are many, and my heart is grieved.
