1
Thomson(p) NOW shall a daughter be hedged in with a hedge. He hath ordered a siege against us.
(J) With a rod they will smite on the cheek the tribes of Israel.
(J) With a rod they will smite on the cheek the tribes of Israel.
BrentonAnd thou, Bethleem, house of Ephratha, art few in number to be reckoned among the thousands of Juda; yet out of thee shall one come forth to me, to be a ruler of Israel; and his goings forth were from the beginning, even from eternity.
2
ThomsonBut as for thee, Bethlehem, thou house of Ephratha, art thou too little to be one of the thousands of Juda? Out of thee one shall come forth for Me, to be the chief of Israel. His goings forth have been from the beginning—from the days of an aeon.
BrentonTherefore shall he appoint them to wait till the time of her that travails: she shall bring forth, and then the remnant of their brethren shall return to the children of Israel.
3
ThomsonTherefore he will continue them till the time of one in travail. She shall bring forth, and the rest of their brethren shall turn to the children of Israel.
BrentonAnd the Lord shall stand, and see, and feed his flock with power, and they shall dwell in the glory of the name of the Lord their God: for now shall they be magnified to the ends of the earth.
4
ThomsonAnd they will stand and look and the Lord will feed His flock with majesty; and in the glory of the name of the Lord their God, they shall subsist; because they shall now be magnified to the ends of the earth; therefore she shall have peace.
BrentonAnd she shall have peace when Assur shall come into your land, and when he shall come up upon your country; and there shall be raised up against him seven shepherds, and eight attacks of men.
5
ThomsonAs for Assur, when he hath come against your land and when he hath passed over your country, against him shall be raised up seven shepherds. And there shall be eight bites of men
BrentonAnd they shall tend the Assyrian with a sword, and the land of Nebrod with her trench: and he shall deliver you from the Assyrian, when he shall come upon your land, and when he shall invade your coasts.
6
Thomsonand they will feed Assur with a sword, and the land of Nebrod* in its enclosure. So he will deliver from the Assyrian, when he hath come against your land and when he hath passed over your borders.
BrentonAnd the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many peoples, as dew falling from the Lord, and as lambs on the grass; that none may assemble nor resist among the sons of men.
7
ThomsonAnd the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations in the midst of many people, like dew falling from the Lord and like lambs upon the wilds.
BrentonAnd the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many nations, as a lion in the forest among cattle, and as a lion's whelp among flocks of sheep, even as when he goes through, and selects, and carries off his prey, and there is none to deliver.
8
ThomsonThat none may be left ungathered or behind among the children of men, the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among beasts of the forest, and like a young lion among flocks of sheep; so that when he passeth through and hath made a choice, he may tear and there shall be none to deliver.
BrentonThine hand shall be lifted up against them that afflict thee, and all thine enemies shall be utterly destroyed.
9
ThomsonThy hand shall be raised up against them who afflict thee; and all thine enemies shall be utterly cut off.
BrentonAnd it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord, that I will utterly destroy the horses out of the midst of thee, and destroy thy chariots:
10
ThomsonAnd it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord, that I will destroy the horses from the midst of thee and destroy thy chariots
Brentonand I will utterly destroy the cities of thy land, and demolish all thy strong-holds:
11
Thomsonand I will root out the cities of thy land and demolish thy fortifications.
Brentonand I will utterly destroy thy sorceries out of thine hands; and there shall be no soothsayers in thee.
12
ThomsonAnd I will cut off thy sorceries out of thy hands and in thee shall be no diviners.
BrentonAnd I will utterly destroy thy graven images, and thy statues out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt never any more worship the works of thine hands.
13
ThomsonAnd I will cut off thy graven images and thy pillars from the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the works of thy hands.
BrentonAnd I will cut off the groves out of the midst of thee, and I will abolish thy cities.
14
ThomsonAnd I will cut down the groves from amidst thee and utterly destroy thy cities;
BrentonAnd I will execute vengeance on the heathen in anger and wrath, because they hearkened not.
