ThomsonNOW when Sanaballat and Tobias and Gesam the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no opening left therein; (at that time I had not fixed up the doors in the gates),
BrentonNow it came to pass, when Sanaballat, and Tobias, and Gesam the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no opening left therein; ( but hitherto I had not set up the doors on the gates;)

ThomsonSanaballat and Gesam sent to me saying, Come let us have a meeting at the villages in the plain of Ono, intending to do me some mischief.

ThomsonUpon which I sent messengers to them saying, I am engaged in a great work, and cannot go down, lest the work should stop. Soon as I have completed it, I will go down to you.
BrentonSo I sent messengers to them, saying, I am doing a great work, and I shall not be able to come down, lest the work should cease: as soon as I shall have finished it, I will come down to you.
GreekΚαὶ ἀπέστειλα ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς ἀγγέλους, λέγων, ἔργον μέγα ἐγὼ ποιῶ, καὶ οὐ δυνήσομαι καταβῆναι, μή ποτε καταπαύσῃ τὸ ἔργον· ὡς ἂν τελειώσω αὐτὸ, καταβήσομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς.

ThomsonAgain they sent to me to the same effect, and I returned them the same answer.
BrentonAnd they sent to me again to this effect; and I sent them word accordingly.

Thomsonin which was written, It is reported among the nations that thou and the Jews intend to rebel; that for this purpose thou art rebuilding the wall; and that thou art to be their king:
BrentonAnd in it was written, It has been reported among the Gentiles that thou and the Jews are planning to revolt: therefore thou art building the wall, and thou wilt be a king to them.
GreekΚαὶ ἦν γεγραμμένον ἐν αὐτῇ, ἐν ἔθνεσιν ἠκούσθη ὅτι σὺ καὶ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λογίζεσθε ἀποστατῆσαι, διὰ τοῦτο σὺ οἰκοδομεῖς τὸ τεῖχος, καὶ σὺ ἔσῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς βασιλέα.

Thomsonand besides this that thou hast set up prophets for thyself that thou mayst make thyself king in Jerusalem over Juda. Now these reports will be told to the king, now therefore come and let us consult together.
BrentonAnd moreover thou hast appointed prophets to thyself, that thou mightest dwell in Jerusalem as a king over Juda: and now these words will be reported to the king. Now then, come, let us take counsel together.
GreekΚαὶ πρὸς τούτοις προφήτας ἔστησας σεαυτῷ, ἵνα καθίσῃς ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ Ἰούδα· καὶ νῦν ἀπαγγελήσονται τῷ βασιλεῖ οἱ λόγοι οὗτοι· καὶ νῦν δεῦρο βουλευσώμεθα ἐπιτοαυτό.

ThomsonIn reply to which I sent to him saying, There is no foundation for the reports as thou mentionest them, for thou thyself feignest them out of thine own heart.
BrentonAnd I sent to him, saying, It has not happened according to these words, even as thou sayest, for thou framest them falsely out of thy heart.
GreekΚαὶ ἀπέστειλα πρὸς αὐτὸν, λέγων, οὐκ ἐγενήθη ὡς οἱ λόγοι οὗτοι ὧς σὺ λέγεις, ὅτι ἀπὸ καρδίας σου σὺ ψεύδῃ αὐτούς.

ThomsonBecause all were trying to terrify us saying, Their hands must be weakened from this work, so that it may not be accomplished, therefore on this occasion I strengthened my hands.
BrentonFor all were trying to alarm us, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from this work, and it shall not be done. Now therefore I have strengthened my hands.
GreekὍτι πάντες φοβερίζουσιν ἡμᾶς, λέγοντες, ἐκλυθήσονται χεῖρες αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἔργου τούτου, καὶ οὐ ποιηθήσεται· καὶ νῦν ἐκραταίωσα τὰς χεῖράς μου.

ThomsonSo when I went to the house of Semei, son of Dalaia, son of Metabaal, he became panicky and said, Let us repair to the house of God, into the midst thereof, and shut the doors thereof—for they are coming by night to kill us.
BrentonAnd I came into the house of Semei the son of Dalaia the son of Metabeel, and he was shut up; and he said, Let us assemble together in the house of God, in the midst of it, and let us shut the doors of it; for they are coming by night to slay thee.

ThomsonBut I said, What sort of a man must he be who would go into the house of God to save his life!
BrentonAnd I said, Who is the man that shall enter into the house, that he may live?
GreekΚαὶ εἶπα, τίς ἐστιν ὁ ἀνὴρ ὃς εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὸν οἶκον, καὶ ζήσεται;

ThomsonAnd upon inquiry I found that God had not sent him, and that his prophecy was a contrivance against me;
BrentonAnd I observed, and, behold, God had not sent him, for the prophecy was a fable devised against me:

Thomsonand that Tobias and Sanaballat had hired a multitude against me, that I might be frightened, and act in this manner, and take a wrong step, and fall into disrepute, that they might reproach me.

ThomsonRemember, O God, Tobias and Sanaballat, according to these doings of theirs; and Noadias the prophet, and the rest of the prophets, who tried to terrify me.

ThomsonAnd when all our enemies heard, all the nations around us were terrified, and great fear fell upon them; for they saw plainly that the perfecting of this work was of our God.
BrentonAnd it came to pass, when all our enemies heard of it, that all the nations round about us feared, and great alarm fell upon them, and they knew that it was of our God that this work should be finished.

ThomsonIn those days many of the nobles of Juda sent letters to Tobias, and received letters from him;

Thomsonand they kept on, telling me what he said and conveying to him what I said. And Tobias sent letters to frighten me.
BrentonAnd they reported his words to me, and carried out my words to him: and Tobias sent letters to terrify me.
GreekΚαὶ τοὺς λόγους αὐτοῦ ἦσαν λέγοντες πρὸς μὲ, καὶ λόγους μου ἦσαν ἐκφέροντες αὐτῷ· καὶ ἐπιστολὰς ἀπέστειλε Τωβίας φοβερίσαι με.
